Is the City of Leicester a dump?

You don’t often see something that eases traffic actually demolished to make the area appeal more to the eye. I would expect that traffic in the area wouldn’t be running as smooth now as it used to, so it was an extremely brave and encouraging move.

I agree the area looks much better now, as does the square opposite the holiday inn, since the car park was replaced with a public area.

I have mentioned on here before that Soulsby deserves great credit for what he has done. Public figures are there to be shot at, rarely praised, but he deserves some credit for being a real visionary and making changes outside of the norm.

Credit where it's due but if knocking down the belgrave flyover and getting rid of that car park were "visionary" then I'm the oracle.

working a door anywhere late at night that caters to steaming idiots must be a nightmare.

coming from someone who mostly goes out and socialises sober now it's so ****ing cringe-worthy watching the way drunk people behave.

people act like absolute bellends after a few drinks.

I'm not having that drinks are to blame either. Whenever I've drank, no matter how much, I've never become such a bellend I felt the need to attack or disobey working staff. the drink doesn't turn you into that, thats exactly what you are but you have no inhibitions to stop it this time.

Agree with this, no one I knock around with gets violent after a drink.

Some of these people are probably causing just as many problems in society when they are sober.

I guess it depends on who you come into contact with as I understand it my Father, who I never met and he's dead now was the kindest most gentle and considerate man you could ever wish to meet yet when he drank he turned into a violent obnoxious arse. I had a brother in law who was not quite so bad but similar. Ironically my Dad ended up owning a pub and my BIL worked for Watneys and was issued with a flagon of beer a day. :(

Here's some excellent news for fans of sports footwear - Footasylum is opening a store at Fosse Shopping Park.

The new shop is opening between Next and River Island, in the unit which housed Monsoon/Accessorize until its closure in January 2017.

Footasylum is set to open before Christmas, and is creating 40 jobs.

Shoppers can look forward to finding a range of sportswear and casual fashion, with brands including Nike, The North Face, New Balance, Converse, Vans, Under Armour and more.

What does Footasylum say about the move?
Talking about the new store, Howard Tattersall, senior marketing manager at Footasylum, said: “We pride ourselves on being a dynamic, adaptive and fast-moving business, with a strong competitive position and great stable of brands.

"Leicester is a great location for us, so we’re delighted to be opening at Fosse Park.

"It is a fantastic shopping destination with access to a large proportion of our target customers.”

Fat brown envelope on its way to the Mercury.

Modern journalism is rubbish.

Bring back Fred Leicester.

Reading this makes you realise how much it has improved in recent years

https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/nep74m/home-coming-leicester?utm_source=reddit.com

It’s certainly been homogenised and been stripped of a lot of it’s uniqueness.

It’s not improved architecturally with many attractive buildings replaced by bland rectangular boxes.

It’s strewn with litter and chewing gum.

Soulsby has done a lot to improve and create open spaces but this has been mostly to attract tourists there’s an awful lot of services and infrastructure structure for those living here that has not improved.

Becoming more well known doesn’t make it better.

So I guess it depends it on what you define as improved.

Anyone recognise this building? Someone on History of Leicestershire in Images on Facebook is asking. 1950/60's architecture.

It looks familiar but I can't place it

Can only think of the former GE Lighting site on Melton Road, or near to the College in Loughborough?

I had a look at that but it doesn't look the same from the Google search

I'll look into the other suggestion

Isn’t it the building opposite the magazine by DMU on Vaughan way? To the right of the old underpass and in front of the Critereon.

I appreciate the effort guys but as much as this building is similar I don't think it's the same building. The brick section is larger on the mystery one and the fascia is different

What is billed as the largest Christmas tree festival in Britain has got under way in Leicestershire.

The event has attracted a record 1,500 trees to Melton Mowbray's medieval St Mary's Church.

Organisers have been working on the festival since late summer, with entries coming from individuals, organisations and businesses.

It is expected up to 30,000 people, from across the country and even abroad, will visit the event.

Fire last night at the International hotel (formerly Centre hotel) on Humbo gate.

Caused £50,000 worth of improvements.

Bit of an weird fire as they usual happen at building the public would like to keep but the developers/owners want to demolish.

If it isn't it isn't a dump the County could soon be one

Why huge amounts of London waste could be tipped in Croft Quarry in Leicestershire

Vast quantities of London’s waste as well as rubble from the construction of the HS2 rail line could be dumped in a Leicestershire quarry.

Enforcement cameras could be installed to fine drivers who stray in two new bus lanes proposed for the busiest roads into Leicester city centre.

The city council has £2 million of Government cash which will go, in part, towards bus-only lanes along Narborough Road and Groby Road.

The council has previously said the new bus lanes would not be enforced, but has now revealed they might be.

The authority says it will monitor the number of motorists flouting the restrictions, and then see if cameras are needed.

It will definitely start enforcing the existing bus lane on the A47 Uppingham Road, near the junction with Coleman Road, at some point next year, but it has yet to say exactly when.

Drivers will face £60 penalties if they enter the bus lanes.

Officials say the three roads, all major arterial routes, have been identified as places where buses are being significantly held up by traffic, so it wants to give them priority status.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said the aim of the scheme was to improve the reliability of buses in the hope that more motorists would switch to public transport rather than adding to congestion by driving into the city.

He said: “We know these are the places where buses are struggling to get through because they are being impeded by traffic, and we have identified that bus lanes would be the solution.

“I have always said about enforcement that I would be pleased if not a single fine was issued and that cars stayed out of the areas that are for buses."

In Narborough Road, the city-bound bus-lane ends at the Fullhurst Avenue junction.

The council wants to add an extra 500 metres of bus lane up to Imperial Avenue by reducing the two lanes for general traffic to one.

The council insists this will have no net impact on general traffic, and will help the movement of buses at times such as when Leicester City and Leicester Tigers are playing and traffic is extremely congested.

The A50 along Groby Road into Leicester is dual carriageway between New Parks Way and Fosse Road North, and the council says the says queues in the morning rush hour can extend 600 metres back.

The nearside lane approaching the junction will be bus-only, allowing them to jump the queue.

A third scheme has been proposed as part of the wider £2.86 million plan to deal with bus pinch points.

That would see a new exit from the city's St Margaret’s Bus Station directly into Burleys Way.

Currently, departing buses have to navigate a 400 metre loop via Gravel Street and Abbey Street to get onto the inner relief road where they are often held up in general traffic.

Design work on the schemes is being carried out and public consultations will be carried out in the summer.
