Ashes 2013

Yep, this is one of those days where everything that could go wrong is going wrong.

Benign pitch + no luck at all = Tough day.

The test match is going to be a draw, but it's good for us to help lower the confidence of England and keep them out in the field for a long period of time, something we never did in England.

You're probably right, but given the lack of confidence in our batting lineup right now I wouldn't be surprised at a collapse caused by scoreboard pressure.

Not as confident as you are for a draw.

We've got a trail that starts a six and an opener who barely averages twenty aged 33.

Johnson getting it up to 95 on this deck, he's on fire.

I tried to warn you we are ****ed in this series.

You could tell after a couple of days of the last test the aggressive attitude of  the aussies had rattled them.

Clarke is a nasty, smash mouth captain that knows how to put his foot on the throat of Cook and ram it home hard.

England are just too soft for this type of series.

Just watching the morning session highlights.

Clarke and Haddin didn't half ride their luck. It won't last all winter.

Oh well, at least those who were bored with England's dominance over Australia should be happier now :(

What a massive let down so far.

Batsmen really need to turn up this innings, we need to just bat this to a boring draw, defeat here will give us a mountain climb and hand all momentum to Australia.

I can't believe all the doom and gloom. Yes we made 570 but it was on a pitch that was a batters paradise. Fair chance your batsmen will enjoy it too.

The last pitch was a batting pitch too, I think that the way Mitch and Harris were charging in today and the fact we lost Cook have 2 inexperienced batsmen at the crease, nobody knows what to expect from Stokes, Prior is off form with the bat, and we are facing a huge total we need to make 370 to avoid the follow on. It is definitely advantage Australia, if we hadn't batted so poorly in Brisbane there might be some more confidence around that we will see this one out for a draw, but the most likely result right now is an Australia win.

It's quite bizarre to sit here having won an ashes 3-0 and be here a few months later with just three of the top seven in their normal batting positions. Stability is key and Flower and Miller have to take some responsibility for this.

Honestly thought we had seen the last of Panesar after his dreadful performances in New Zealand, he really is bad, his career figures are even more startling when you consider he is only brought in to play on turning pitches. Add to that his comical fielder and catching and you are almost talking starting a hundred runs behind.

Bairstow.and Bresnan back for Perth. Finn as well if we're 2-0 down.

We need to end today no more than five down. Carberry owes his team a huge knock for that Haddin drop.

won the day but I just hope we don't fook around with the middle order/tail and get them out for 350.

I guess my hopes were dashed, we do seem to have a problem getting rid of the middle and tail end for some reason.

Well I guess my bet looks safe.

I know what you mean crazy to think we are giving debuts in an away Ashes series, I wasn't 100% convinced by Compton, but if we had kept him as opener and Root at 6 last summer, then we would have a much more stable batting line-up.

Lined up in the first test: Cook, Compton, Trott, KP, Bell, Root. Compton would have had 14 matches under his belt, Root more established at 6, and a much more settled line-up, then with Trott pulling out, Root could have moved up to 3 and Baristow come in.

Instead we have one debutant, an opener in his second test, Root at 3 for the first time in his career (I know it's not that big a difference to opening especially with Cook out after 11 balls) and Monty, when we see the problems caused by pace did they just get the pitch wrong?

What I also don't understand is we bowled for nearly 2 days and not once did he toss the cherry to Root, on what was supposed to be spin friendly conditions. Ok he might have got spanked around, but so did Swann and Panesar.

I still think we will draw this test, but I am a little baffled as to what the selectors were thinking.

Have we got too complacent or been shown up by an improved Aussie side with a point to prove?

TBH Although we won 3-0 in the summer I am not sure we were that convincing at times.

we weren't that scoreline flattered us a lot. Aussies continue to improve we don't.

They have definitely improved under Boof but this is a still a bowling attack that managed to take twenty wickets just twice in ten matches before.

We don't look hungry enough and have made too many changes.

The key in the summer was some devastating bowling spells, we always looked a bit fragile with the bat, as shown by the fact we didn't score over 400 in an innings, and rarely seemed to dominate the Aussie bowling, apart from KP's century the rest was grinding out scores at 2 an over on relatively slow pitches.
