Ashes 2013

Well. As someone who suffers from a 'mental illness' myself I think I can say they are quite manageable with the right treatment and therapy.

Now I know all you PC brigade mongers wont agree but as a kid growing up dreaming of playing cricket what are you dreaming of? Well for most of them it's huge high level International test series, and The Ashes are the biggest of the lot. I'm sorry but if he wasn't right he should never have agreed to go in the first place, and in addition it all seems a little coincidental that Warner put the boot into him and a couple of days later he is on his toes.

I wish I understood what it was about their lives, the good money, the first class travel, the great food, the camaraderie of being part of a team and the months off work etc that was so terrible as from where I am sitting it seems a ****ing good life and career to chuck away over a few mental issues. These pro sportsmen have psychologists and doctors wrapped around them 24/7 also, just makes no sense to me.

Thanks for the clarification.

I must say for someone who suffers from mental illnesses you do seem to show a certain amount of contempt for other sufferers of them. Mad Marcus? Really?

I would also think that given the massive variety of mental illnesses that some of them cannot be controlled by medication and therapy. Not totally, anyway.

That said, I do totally agree that given the quality of psychologists around the team this is something that should have been taken into account and perhaps Trott shouldn't have traveled. But we don't know nearly enough about the illness to say that with much certainty.

I know being a member of an Ashes team would be a dream come true for me, but i think dismissing what is probably a serious stress illness as running away without knowing anything about specifics is callous.

We all need a little time with our family, bit do you think your employer would send you home from work first class for as long as you felt like it just because you had mental issues?

This is the real world not some fluffy fantasy realm.

Thank **** he doesn't have a proper job!

If it meant you were unable to do your job to a satisfactory level, then they would, if he was a doctor, or a lorry driver, or a teacher, or a salesman, they would because the consequences of a mistake is very severe.

If it was that serious he would of copped a game suspension 20% approx $2.8k for a guy earning close to $3m shows it was barely a slap on the wrist.

Winning test matches or being liked.....tough choice that one CPF

But it is still uncommon to be fined for sledging, so it shows it wasn't just normal sledging.

As for being liked or successful, well I guess you're used to being neither, :P , but you're right I wouldn't be happy to have England come back from Australia with the moral high ground but no little urn because they got bullied out of it.

I'm just excited about it potentially being the first competitive Ashes series for a while.

hahahahahahahahaaha

That is funny, they'd sack you maybe if you took too long of sick.

I'm tired of getting attacked from all angles on this thread so I;m off as none of you will ever even evaluate my point fairly let alone consider it valid.

You strive all your life to reach the pinnacle in your field of work, you get there, then you run home with mental issues.

Not for me I'm afraid, there are all sorts of ways to deal with these issues and running away is probably the worst of the lot.

Good day!

They wouldn't because they couldn't, they may stop paying you sick pay once you have used your full entitlement, but they can't sack you for being off sick if you are signed off by the doctor, which they will do for mental health reasons. Most employers know and understand the problems caused by mental health issues and will be very understanding.

So tell me, as I know you aren't off, what benefit is there in him staying on the tour batting shit, damaging his health and jeopardising our chances of winning the Ashes? How does that help anyone?

I've been offered time off by my employer on mental health grounds before and I don't play sport in front of millions. I've also been offered doctor's notes like they're candies.

For the record, I declined both but suffice to say, the working world is waking up to the effects and impact of stress. Fortunately not everyone is a ****ing dinosaur, Mack.

I'm confused. Surely Trott is going on sick leave and then, if he can't return, won't have his central contract renewed and therefore won't be an employee of the ECB. Just like if you had a "stress related mental illness" at work you'd be put on sick leave and then, if you couldn't work after a while, are likely to have your contract cancelled :dunno: This is my experience from my employers and from people in my family who have suffered from mental illness.

I was off work just earlier this year with a similar issue. Still on tablets now as we speak for it all.

Unless it's happened to you I'd say people will never fully understand what it's like.

The one where playing an Ashes series is the very pinnacle of professional cricket and where a few digs from the aussies have seen him running off home.

The bloke has played in three before, it's nothing new so he has reached the pinnacle. He's probably heard a lot of sledging before but something has happened, possibly not related to the match, has affected him enough to come home.

I doubt he wanted to come home, I doubt he wanted to "run away", this won't have been taken lightly.

this is bad news from the perspective of giving the side balance -when he came into the team Trott was the perfect no.3 for me with an unflappable temperament and the ability to bat time without feeling the pressure to try something he was unequipped to deal with none of the back up batters can do that.

The most natural replacement is Nick Compton and he may well get the nod before the tour ends

Australia just won by 381 runs.

381 runs! You might believe we can brush that off and bounce back like fluffy bunnies but my 30 something years of watching England tell me something different.

It was a bad performance, I presume you have forgotten the last few years, you only appear on here afte we have lost.

Didn't hear from you over the summer and you vanished like a fart in the wind after you went ranting after the first test in India.

One bad test match, these guys deserve some faith and support considering they have came back from defeats to win India and have won the Ashes series on the trot.

A shame for Trott as well but something had been as miss for a while now.

Hopefully he can get his head right and get back to being the batsman he was two years back.

Team for Adelaide.

Cook

Carberry

Root

KP

Bell

Ballance

Prior

Bresnan

Broad

Swann

Anderson

Trott was crap in the summer and crap in the opener, he should have been dropped anyway so I'm not sure what the fuss is about.

something to do with being a good player and playing in three winning Ashes scoring shedloads of runs in the process and earning the right to a bit of patience to see if he could sort his game out - that's it really

Probably to do with the fact that Trott is on it he is a run machine!

You don't drop a world class performer after one bad series.

Will Bresnan be fit? Why Balance over Barstow ?

Should be.

I'd go with Ballance as JB has been completely shown up against short pitched bowling.

I've fixed it for you

lol harsh but fair

He'll be a decent limited overs player, but for me, he's not got the technique to succeed at Test cricket at the minute.

Very promising.

Averages well over 50 in both forms of the game and probably our long term solution to number six.

Big series to come in for debut though
