Strokes Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Not sure I believe this. Athers opened to Alan Donald, Courtney Walsh, Curtly Ambrose, Glenn McGrath, Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram. He'd fill his boots today, bar Steyn fast bowling is on its arse. I was talking about the era rather than blaiming them as captains or indviduals.
leicsmac Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Atherton and Cook would be an awesome opening partnership. Never forget Athers 185* in Joburg to get a draw for us in the late 90's, still probably the best innings I've ever seen from an England player. 492 balls of which more than half were from Donald or Pollock. He occupied the crease for well over ten hours. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/current/match/63701.html Fantastic innings. Donald was outright nasty that day, and Athers just faced him down.
Guest MattP Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Fantastic innings. Donald was outright nasty that day, and Athers just faced him down. It was brilliant. Chairmans XI tonight, huge audition. Carberry and Root to open, Bairstow, Balance and Stokes all play. Rankin and Finn in. Probably 2 maybe even 3 places to play for.

marko Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Who's upset Rory Mcilroy "anyone but England" . I'm changing my bank immediately! I read the article yesterday and nearly posted it. Also said "hopefully more of the same" next week in Adelaide. I think I'm going to sign up for the 'Anyone but Rory' club now.
leicsmac Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Hasn't he ever heard of Andy Murray? Apparently not. Every man and his dog watching the press conference knew Murray was joking and he's still dealing with the fallout 7 years on - goodness only knows what will happen with Rory if he's actually being serious. That said, he was talking about the cricket team rather than the football team so it might not get as widespread.
Guest MattP Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Who gives a **** anyway? He had the chance of being the best golfer in the world and he's throwing it all away for some ugly Danish pig. Good shows from Ballance and Bairstow last night, could be an interesting selection for Adelaide. Carberry needs runs big-time.
Finnegan Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 I get reminded on a frequent basis that it's the England and WALES cricket team and I still raise a smile at David Warner smashing the "poms" round the park. If anyone's upset by Rory having a giggle they need words with themselves. It's amazing how much English sports fans love "banter" until they're the butt of it.

Tell you who desperately needs runs - Matt Prior. He's woefully out of form with the bat at the minute.

Certainly agree with you on the distraction though. Anyway, back on topic - with Trott gone I'm not sure they'd want to shuffle things at the top of the order by getting rid of Carberry just yet. He'll have a spot at the second Test, if he fails there some questions might be asked though. Ballance staking his claim well.
Brainy Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Absolute long shot but would really really love to see Moeen Ali to replace Trott in the side. In the development squad and scored 83 in the first innings, took a 5fer bowling in the 2nd innings. Quick scorer, fast improving spinner, PCA player of the year and MVP 2013. Sadly the ECB only tend to pick players from a handful of counties.

Ballance is the absolutely no brainer, he's averaging miles over 55 in CC, if that doesnt get you in the side I don't know what will.

Agree with the 11 chosen but would love to swap Bell and Root, losing Trott means we need a number 3 who can stick around if we lose an early wicket.
Bert Posted 29 November 2013 Posted 29 November 2013 Why do people care? McIlroy isn't even English?!
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 I can't believe you guys care about what Rory said. I would like to give you guys some info on the chairman's 11 but barely heard of any of them, only a few have first class experience so was expecting your boys to pile on the runs. The wicketkeeper is only 16

And whose idea it was to play a two day match in the most vile place in Australia in searing heat needs their head looking at as well, I can imagine Bresnan getting into an argument with a few abbos with one of them asking him for some goon in Bojangles and being put out of the whole tour to cap it off tonight.

Guest MattP Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 I really don't even know where to start with what is wrong with this post... Start wherever you want, it is the worst place in Australia. I've never been so intimidated in my life in a civilised country walking around at night. I could have mentioned the sexual abuse and alcohol problems if I'd wanted to go further. Try all you like you won't be able to disprove it, you know it's right and so do millions of others. Just go to tripadvisor and read the reviews of the place from everyone who has been there. If you want to try and enforce some liberal fantasy about it being a paradise you're wasting your time with me, go and live in a town camp if you really believe it.
Guest MattP Posted 30 November 2013 Posted 30 November 2013 A reminder to any "post 2005" cricket fans again about how chirpy and unbearable the Australias are in victory, one test gone and even the stadium announcer is sledging the players. http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/ground-announcer-stood-down-for-inappropriate-introduction-of-monty-panesar-20131130-2yihw.html

Uncle Monty Posted 2 December 2013 Posted 2 December 2013 Ashes 2013-14: Monty Panesar announcer denies racism The announcer who was stood down by Cricket Australia for mocking Monty Panesar has denied making a racial slur towards the England spinner. David Nixon rejects the allegation he adopted an Indian accent to introduce Panesar during England's tour match in Alice Springs on Saturday. Continue reading the main story “There are few worse things than to be branded a racist†David NixonSacked announcer "It comes as a complete surprise to me to be at the centre of a controversy about racial slurring," he said. "I absolutely refute any allegation that I feigned an Indian accent." Nixon, a producer for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), had been using a sarcastic tone throughout England's match against the CA Chairman's XI and was cautioned during Friday's play for teasing England batsman Joe Root. Cricket Australia described his introduction of Panesar - who was born in Luton and is of Indian descent - as "inappropriate", but Nixon is adamant he intended no offence. He insisted he said: "'There's a change of bowler at the Traeger Avenue end... its Montyyy!' That was it. "I fail to see how anyone could interpret my introduction of Monty Panesar as racial slurring. "I am certainly responsible for what I say, but not what people hear. "There are few worse things than to be branded a racist. To have such an accusation levelled at me is not only offensive, but defamatory The sledging continues.
Captain... Posted 2 December 2013 Posted 2 December 2013 Even if he did it's not really racist, apart from the fact Monty doesn't have an Indian accent, it is not different to announcing Prior like a South African, or Anderson in a posh plummy English accent, when he sounds nothing like the Queen. I'm surprised he's come out and said he didn't say it in an Indian accent, as it was widely reported that he did.
