Ashes 2013

How many times have we had teams 5/6 down and then taken foot off throat and allowed them to make 300+? It wasn't really a problem before as the batsmen could step up to post a good total in reply, but that's no loner the case and it's deeply concerning.

Certainly far easier to bat when the ball gets older here and Haddin is on fire but yeah, the stats for their 5th and 6th wicket partnerships must be outrageous.

Popped out with the Barmy Army last night. Hanging today. A local refused to believe I was supporting England because, and I quote, "you're a Paki". WELCOME TO OZ   1957

According to the beeb, Australia's 6/7 is averaging 90 odd while England's 11.something.

Kind of Mac's point right there.

And we have dropped Haddin twice, catches win matches. :(

Just seen a Leicester flag in the background.

Lads who go up the Gynsills in Glenfield. Always do Perth.

Great wicket. Hopefully we can knock Mitch out sharpish.

If not just need to tighten up for the next ten overs here then knock them over with the new ball.

So is Mitch going to get 50?

How confident are you feeling at the moment? What would be a good score to get them out for?

I wouldn't be confident chasing any more than 350 (less than that in honesty). Seeing they are currently on 326, I can't see us getting them out for 350.

It looked good but it's slipping away.

that's a lot of runs in a day on an "unplayable" wicket with power to add tomorrow. We'll do well to get anywhere near matching it already and at 157-5 we must have hoped for better. Batting last chasing anything near or over 200 probably unachievable . Haddin has been a real battler in the series difficult to get rid of  - like $hite on the sole of your shoe .

350 is probably par. They are in a very good position.

As Matt says slipping away.....

First hour tomorrow either gets is back in the match or leaves us battling for a draw that takes it to Boxing Day.

I'm guessing from the last two tests that, actually, it's irrelevant what score they actually get - in terms of predicting a result - because we won't really know how effective a score it is until we see if England's batsmen actually turn up?

It seems that the like of KP, Bell and Cook are all capable of both crumbling for 12 or smashing 112.

As a cricket novice it's very peculiar watching supposedly world class batsmen consistently crumple for such woeful scores.

Get yourself in the nets and face a bowling machine at 90mph. It won't be peculiar anymore. Ricky Ponting and Brian Lara are two of the greatest ever and they were all over the place a lot of the time for the first 15-20 balls of their innings.

It looks a better Perth pitch than usual but you don't want them getting anymore than 350, 400 absolute tops.

That said, we have gotten what we deserve from this series, too many changes, not even consistency in selection and what seems to be a lack of drive. (Which probably comes from antoher Ashes coming around too quickly)

Said it before that we lack that unmerciful streak that never eases off, so many times we get the top order out just to let a middle order or a tail ended take the game away from us, we have to learn to be nastier.

I actually thought we were a bit too aggressive today.

They got their early wickets bowling to a plan and a good length, then as soon as they went 5 down they tried to bowl quicker and were bowling short of length with the odd bouncer thrown in. Had they stuck to the earlier plans I think we would have been better. (and if Carberry runs to a ball to catch it instead of standing around)

That said I cant imagine how tired the bowlers would have been mid afternoon later in day, it's tiring enough just standing and watching in that heat.

He shouldn't do, he's white.

So am I.

So why isn't every team full of pace bowlers? All the stuff I've read makes Johnson sound like the last of a dying breed.

And weren't England out in the last test just due to shit decision making? Boycott and Aggers weren't overly amused.

We lost the last test due to terrible shot selection and poor fielding.

Because good fast bowlers are very hard to come by, they have become a bit of a dying breed as pitches have become slower and players have reworked their actions that makes them a tad slower as all the fast bowlers from the 70's and 80's are walking corpses now due to their backs and injuries from it taking its toll.

Johnson is just flying with confidence at the minute, when he was low he was dreadful. Its amazing watching this and seeing he couldnt make the squad this summer.

Strange people these convicts.

Certainly are, an English guy from Singapore comes with us and he has been asked if he is a "secret gook" - whatever that is.

Anyway I'm shattered and off to bed.

One reason is that it's pretty tough on the body. A lot of fast bowler's have run themselves into the ground (Brett Lee, Shaun Tait etc.) to the extent they struggle to play a 5 day test so people will rework their action, be 5-10 mph slower, and prolong their career.
