jonthefox Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 Birmingham . If your talking the greater Birmingham area, then they have two premier teams.
Kitchandro Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 Sheffield. Birmingham is a much bigger City but Sheffield has 2 bigger clubs than Birmingham's 2nd club. Plus it's got so much history with the birth of football.
Kitchandro Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 Birmingham . If your talking the greater Birmingham area, then they have two premier teams. In that case couldn't you count Yorkshire as Sheffield as well?
Corky Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 Tough one. Both Wednesday and United are bigger than Birmingham City, but between them they haven't won a major trophy for 23 years and only one top flight season in the last 14.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 An almost impossible question to answer because there's no definitive criteria. Villa's history is ridiculous in comparison to any clubs that reside within each city but by the same token Birmingham City are comfortably the smallest in terms of honours and fan base. Do you base it on combined success of clubs, attendances, ground size or historical aspects (when clubs were formed, etc)?
Bert Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 In recent years it's certainly the Birmingham clubs. Overall I'd say Sheffield but its very close.
jonthefox Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 In that case couldn't you count Yorkshire as Sheffield as well? Fookin hell, we may as well say the west midlands then. If were talking about greater Birmingham, then that includes West Brom. So, no question, Birmingham is bigger.
Guest Bilo Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 Aston Villa are the biggest of the four main clubs by a statute mile in pretty much every respect but as already mentioned, Birmingham City are much smaller than either Sheff Yoo or Wednesday. Tough call but I'd argue Sheffield is the bigger footballing city purely because almost everybody I've ever met from Sheffield supports either United or Wednesday, very few plastics in that city for some reason. 40,000 for League One fixtures and a Third Division record of 50,000 in the late 70s tells us it's a big fixture. To summarise; the Steel City is the bigger rivalry while Birmingham is home to the biggest club.
Guest Bilo Posted 10 July 2013 Posted 10 July 2013 40,000 in league one. SRSLY? Not far off, 36.364 last time round. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17093412 This is the game from the late 1970s as well. 11am kick off on Boxing Day attracting 50,000 in the third tier, bleedin' incredible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_8Wzvi2OYA
AyewJoking Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 historically, Sheffield but all the clubs are mediocre now.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 Both are cities with football teams in them, so technically Birmingham as it's our second largest city. But answering your question seriously, it's Sheffield. Hands down. You can tell that by just looking at Birmingham's attendances home and away and likewise for Wednesday's. Was impressed with Wednesday's away following to our place. Don't mind the odd coin/flare throwing incident either
Leicesterpool Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 Also need to remember in Birmingham, there isn't just Villa and Birmingham but also West Brom. Every time i go to Birmingham on a non matchday, it's actually pretty rare to see Birmingham shirt, mainly you see only see Villa shirts. To be honest you'll mainly only see Birmingham shirts in the small heath area. West Brom it's pretty rare to actually see baggies shirt at all, there are only support within the area of the ground. Villa are heavily supported through the out the region and to be honest they've got fans all over the country and they would probably come in the top 20 most supported clubs in the world. Sheffield to be honest, when i've been there on non matchday you don't see any football shirts whatsoever, i remember when Leicester played at Wednesday last season, i didn't see a single Wednesday shirt until i got on the tram to the ground. To be honest i didn't remember seeing a single blades shirt anywhere while on that visit. I'm going to say Birmingham personally, purely down to the fan base of both Villa and West Brom is bigger than the blades and Wednesday. Though saying that i think you might find there's more at stake in the second city derby than the steel city derby, why? I don't know. There's more people in Birmingham i suppose. However saying that at times it appears at times that Birmingham hate Villa more than Villa hate Birmingham. Which is the normal case of chip on there shoulder and jealousy.
Jimothy Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 For anyone who can't be arsed to read Leicesterpool's drivel I've edited it. I haven't got a clue, so I'll waffle on about shirts then say Birmingham because I support Villa.
Alf Bentley Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 In that case couldn't you count Yorkshire as Sheffield as well? I'm sure Leeds fans would have no objection to their city being seen as a suburb of Sheffield... More to the point, which is the bigger footballing city, Coventry or Northampton?
Leicesterpool Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 I'm sure Leeds fans would have no objection to their city being seen as a suburb of Sheffield... More to the point, which is the bigger footballing city, Coventry or Northampton? Plus Rotherham
Fox92 Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United haven't won anything for years, even though they are both fairly big clubs. On the other hand, Birmingham won the Carling Cup and played in Europe recently. Villa are an ever present PL side as well. If we're talking about the better City, it's Sheffield (got to stay local)
Jimothy Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 Firstly, only a total bellend laughs at their own jokes when nobody else does. Secondly the only funny part of your post is your woeful attempt at the English language.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 Villa would probably come in the top 20 most supported clubs in the world. No they ****ing wouldn't!
Bert Posted 11 July 2013 Posted 11 July 2013 I could probably think of 50 clubs that have bigger support than villa in the world. Ridiculous statement.
