And this...

Also I've always loved the way that Harrison's SG and Lennon's Epiphone Casino mesh. They actually aren't an overdriven amp sound. Geoff Emerick had them on direct input into the valve desk - one channel fed into the other, both overloaded and distorted. EDIT TO ADD: The image used on this video to recapture Lennon's vocals is not actually from the White Album Sessions, but funnily enough, during the recording of Hey Bulldog.

I listened to an interesting radio interview with Jeff Lynne who produced Free as a bird.  He basically had tapes provided by Yoko of John Lennon singing the song in 1977, which sounded like a demo tape.  He then worked with the remaining Beatles to produce the record - Paul sang a soft backing to John's voice through the song which I admit I hardly noticed and George did the great intro.  Jeff used all the technology he could get his hands on to modify the output of the original tapes to produce harmony between the voices and John's piano from the original tape.  Anyway for general interest here's a little of what contributed to the end product.

I hadn't realised that George Harrison contributed to Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man (which Donovan wrote while he was in the ashram in India with the Beatles).  The verse didn't make it to the final release but Donovan has included it in his live performances.  George's verse was:

When the truth gets buried deep

Beneath the thousand years of sleep

Time demands a turn around

And once again the truth is found

Here's the Donovan classic including George's verse.

I only learnt this other day. There was a program about Donovan/Beatles/India in the 60's and he spoke of Harrison contributing to Hurdy Gurdy Man (which is a great song) and other moments in general such as the songwriting that was happening then... some of the White Album was written at that time in India (the likes of Dear Prudence etc).

The clawhammer picking technique on 'Dear Prudence' bestowed to Lennon courtesy of Donovan during the stay at Rishikesh was used on other compositions on the White Album - 'Julia' and 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' and several subsequent songs such as the "everybody had a hard year" ending of 'I've Got a Feeling' which was originally a separate song, and 'Look at Me'. It also influenced McCartney's 'Blackbird'.

I’ve only just learnt of the Paul McCartney is dead conspiracy theory. And I thought flat earth was far fetched this made for incredible reading.

thoughts everyone?

It actually dates back to the sixties. Supposedly he was killed in a bike accident in 1966 and replaced by Billy Shears. One of the reasons that Lennon wrote 'Glass Onion' was in response to all those nutters attempting to interpret Beatles lyrics. He also referred to it in 'How Do You Sleep' - an attack on his former friend and songwriting partner. Junk conspiracy theory has burgeoned following the advent of the internet, but this one actually has some truth to it. I mean the real McCartney would never in a million years have composed 'The Frog Chorus'.
