pSinatra Posted 16 August 2013 Posted 16 August 2013 I used to live in Camborne left 23 years ago I doubt it has changed much I've caught the train to Newquay from that station. Left my wallet on the train. A few extra cans of Special Brew for someone? George Stephenson my arse..........it was Richard Trevithick who pioneered the steam locomotive!!
Bettsj2 Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 Redruth is ****ing horrible. So many places in Cornwall are to be fair but there is more than enough beauty thankfully to overshadow them. Agree with an earlier post that said Lowestoft. My dads from there and we used to have to visit my grandma until we finally got her to move to Leicester. It really is a depressing place. I had to go back for my Grandads funeral a couple of years ago. I felt like jumping in the grave with him. Horrible place.
reynard Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 Birmingham might not be a town but it's a phooking diabolical place. One of the ugliest cities in the world and full of shit tossers. I've been to Dhaka and I'd much rather live there than Birmingham. Sorry but this is nonsense. If you put some of the buildings in central Birmingham into a European guide book they wouldn't look out of place with some of the finest cities in Europe. I lived there for years in the early 80s when it was grim but now it is much improved and probably better than Leicester. Travelling around quite a bit for work I'd say the following take some beating. luton Stevenage Southend Lowestoft Coventry Redditch Telford Stoke Derby Dunstable Probably my top 10 of those places I regularly visit.
Bryn Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 To be honest, if we're going on aesthetics alone as that article is, Leicester is a long way down. Hull is nicer to look at, with the Marina and such.
Vacamion Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 With apologies for the 'one downmanship', I've been to a lot of the places mentioned in this thread, and in most cases I can think of several towns in Scotland that 'out-crap' them. Leaving aside the godawful bits of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and ignoring the fact that Dundee and Aberdeen have massive problems with heroin addiction, I would volunteer Saltcoats, Methil, Airdrie, East Kilbride and Cumbernauld as crapholes of the lowest merit. I once dealt with a solicitor whose client was from a mining village in South Lanarkdhire called Riggside. The solicitor told me, straight faced 'they eat their kids up there, don't go there alone.'
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 Been Cambourne & Redruth several times. Got a friend who's a GP in Cambourne. It's thoroughly depressing & indicates the levels of poverty in certain parts of Cornwall.....away from the usual tourist areas. Yeah, I know Cambourne, and it has sort of got left behind.
Rincewind Posted 17 August 2013 Posted 17 August 2013 As much as I try to defend my biirth place of Leicester I get a little fed up with it at times and even look forward to a day out in Nottingham. I hope to renew my Senior Railcard which gives me a third off fares and visit more places.
Finnaldo Posted 18 August 2013 Posted 18 August 2013 Grimsby. It's even in the name. And a special shout-out to Stoke, it's the first town that I've felt instantly depressed upon entering.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 18 August 2013 Posted 18 August 2013 Slough is a dive. We found 3 pubs there. The best of those 3 was a Weatherspoons. Round the corner from there is an Irish Pub called the rising sun. Thought that'd be busy when we played ireoand. Was it ****, there was me and my workmate and that's it. The shop opposite there has a window full of advertisements offering home massages

John Betjemen edit; not a town as such( a suburb really) , but Easterhouse east of Glasgow was the one place I really felt relieved when I left.
Rincewind Posted 18 August 2013 Posted 18 August 2013 Grimsby. It's even in the name. And a special shout-out to Stoke, it's the first town that I've felt instantly depressed upon entering. A few years back when visiting relatives in The Lake District with a brother his car must have broken down 3 or 4 times on the trot near Stoke. It was a jinx. I think he tries and avoid Stoke now. Although if I go by coach it stops there. Not for long though.

Can i add Wick and Peterhead to your list of northerly contenders? Some of the welsh towns, Caernavaon for example, seem absolutely dead.
Guest Foxin_mad Posted 19 August 2013 Posted 19 August 2013 Basingstoke is a right shithole, seems to be one big car park and full of twats. Every town that makes up most of London is also shite, London is a horrible place full of ignorant wankers no idea why any idiot would pay £200000+ for a terrace house or flat in that dump. Plymouth also deserves a special mention, apart from the harbour part its a right dive. Contrary to popular belief Stoke is not as bad as it seems passing through on the A50 which doesn't do it any favours and passes through one of the worst areas Meir as you enter. The outskirts are pretty decent and its one of the greenest cities in the UK, there is the added bonus of being 30 minutes from the peaks and 1 hour from the sea. Hanley (alleged City Centre) is a right dump though. For the most part the people here a very friendly too. As they have had a clueless Labour council for the past 60+ years who have generally wasted most of the money moving offices 3 times since the 70s, its hardly surprising. Most cities in the UK are pretty crap on the whole, ones that have had many years of shit Labour councils are generally worse. Leicester's Labour council were always coming up with crap ideas too.
Vlad the Fox Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 Luton without any shadow of doubt. Went through on a national express bus once and just as I was thinking what a dump I saw a group of 6 or 7 year olds throwing stones at a pensioner. Stoke as well.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 The best thing about Luton as a whole is the entrance to the away stand is slightly reminiscent of Filbert St in that the turnstiles are built in the houses. Other than that it is a complete and utter dive.
Jon the Hat Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 Cambourne & Redruth are still victims of the end of the mining industry in Cornwall. Sad places with no money or prospects.
ADK Posted 20 August 2013 Posted 20 August 2013 Rhyl looked like abit of a shithole when I drove past, has something like the highest rate of benefit scroungers.
The Doctor Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 As a percentage of the city that is. "Hull was the most severely damaged British city during the Second World War, with 86,715 buildings damaged and 95 percent of houses damaged or destroyed" It was targeted as a major port, as well as being a dumping ground for unused bombs for German bomber pilots who were unable to find their designated target before having to return to the continent. It's another example of Hull's status as a city being overlooked, to the detriment of its residents. No-one is ever taught about what the city gave during the war. Not sure being an Axis target practice zone is a particularly great contribution to the war from our point of view...
lavrentis Posted 21 August 2013 Posted 21 August 2013 Grantham needs a mention. That place is like some sort of sick social experiment carried out in the ruins of a nuclear holocaust. I would rather live on a canoe than in that dump. Well I'm going to take this seriously and take offence. Grantham is alright, apart from the Earlsfield.
