Dylan Posted 2 September 2013 Posted 2 September 2013 Looking to buy a laptop in the next week or so for Uni; something reliable and that will last me... Don't have much of a clue about them, been told to get one with at least i5, 6GB memory and a decent hard-drive. Been looking around and seen a Dell around £500 with i5, 8gb memory and 1TB hard-drive which doesn't seem too bad. Also slightly tempted by spending a bit more on a Mac as everyone who has one seems to love em and apparently they never break... but then I'm thinking I could save £350 cos a cheaper one should do the job. Any advice? edit: also Windows 8 sounds really shit and hard to use which is another pro for getting a Mac instead
lavrentis Posted 2 September 2013 Posted 2 September 2013 Windows 8 is just different. It's no more shite than Windows 7 imo, you can use it exactly the same. That isn't worth splashing out hundreds more for a mac equivalent imo TBH, you can't go wrong with buying new PC's nowadays, they all will do the job you want - apart from gaming which is another matter. I'd head into a PC world, see if they have any decent offers on, check out the specs and see if it's for you
kot94 Posted 2 September 2013 Posted 2 September 2013 Don't get a dell insipron. They heat up so badly. Plus the speakers are very poor. If you can afford a mac then go for it they will last longer then most windows and will keep working perfectly
ProfuseFootball Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 Make sure anything you have has a Solid State Drive, preferably 256gb. Will improve your speed no-end.

Monk Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 Get a MacBook. You'll never look back solidly built too unlike dells which tend to go wrong after the first year or so from what I've seen. If you must get a windows laptop try out the Samsung ones. Pretty slick.
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 With all the wanking you'll end up doing get a mac.
LcFc_Smiv Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 apart from the quotes above, get yourself some backup kit. that way you don't lose a years work when a mate spills pint over your laptop. I was just about to say, my smartest investment at uni was a memory stick and knowhow cloud.
Fox42 Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 I bought Win8 HP Envy dv7 last month. Has an i7 intel processor, 16GB memory and a 1TB hard drive. It was on sale for £899. Works a treat!
Alf Bentley Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 With all the wanking you'll end up doing get a mac. A dirty mac?
AoWW Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 I've had a Dell for about 4 years with no probs whatsoever - in fact I can't rate it highly enough. I've recently replace it with an Asus Ultrabook but still use my Dell everyday at work now.
Vlad the Fox Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 Are chromebooks any good and would one be useful for university in replacement of a laptop?
HEGGSY Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 Are chromebooks any good and would one be useful for university in replacement of a laptop?Chromebooks only offer browsing and light documents, I'm not sure if office is available on the Chrome OS. I think they're not meant for anything other than searching the web.
Webbo Posted 3 September 2013 Posted 3 September 2013 My daughter bought this last week http://direct.asda.com/Medion-E6234-15.6ins-Laptop---Intel-Celeron---500GB-HDD/000584256,default,pd.html only £259
Dylan Posted 7 September 2013 Author Posted 7 September 2013 Been having a browse and thinking of getting one of these two, but not sure which: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-15r-5521-15-6-touchscreen-laptop-silver-21429240-pdt.html http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/sony-vaio-e-series-sve1513b4e-ae1-15-5-laptop-light-silver-20759711-pdt.html Any advice?
ousefox Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 I'm shit with laptops - spilt blackcurrent all over one, and the hard drive of the one I got 15 months ago is ****ed and going to cost me too much to be worth repairing. Thinking of getting a cheap one for the rest of uni. Are these any good? I don't do any gaming really, just watch a lot of TV series, and use Iplayer quite a lot. Did fancy an Apple one but not worth it with my track record and I'd have to get insurance etc. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/advent-tacto-11-6-touchscreen-laptop-21436590-pdt.html http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Sony_WHITE_-_AMD_E2-1800_4GB_500GB_AMD_HD73400_INTEGRATED_GRAPHICS_BT-CAM_1_SVE1112M1EW/version.asp http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Packard_Bell_TE11_4GB_500GB_15.6_inch_Windows_8_Laptop__NX.C2CEK.001/version.asp Best out of them?

Had a Medion computer which is great, but probably their best at the the time so it was quite expensive.

Don't get the dell it will heat up massively. And the battery life is poor. After the first couple months the battery will only last an hour and half topshttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Z580-15-6-inch-Notebook-Red/dp/B00BLZB5AW/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1378561886&sr=1-1
Fox92 Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 I'm not a real fan of Laptops, even for uni I've got a desktop! So although I study this subject, I'm not that clued up on laptops and which brand is better. Like always though, it depends what you want one for. OP, I see at the top there you've posted 'been told to get i5'. Yeah, a very leading processor (although I'm more AMD ) but will the laptop just be for your eduction, or is it your main system? What about a more basic system, and re Watson, just go for something basic - decent enough cpu, a decent amount of memory and space. You can pick up laptops with 1.8+ghz cpu's, 4gb ram and 250gb hard drives for less than £290 now which is basic enough if you're just looking for something like that - not much gaming, basic web surfing and word processor.
Monk Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 Are chromebooks any good and would one be useful for university in replacement of a laptop? Depends what you are studying I suppose. You can now get office 2013 in browser version so could work a treat. They're nice bits of kit but limited in many ways. I wouldn't use it for any course that requires heavy image editing, mathematical or design programmes etc. could work well for languages, humanities, etc
Webbo Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 What does she think of that? Had a Medion computer which is great, but probably their best at the the time so it was quite expensive. She likes it but she's no expert. It seemed the best value we could find.

Pretty downhill from there I suppose.

As anyone used a tablet for note taking during lectures on something like Evernote or google docs?
