FoxesFan100 Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Just a quick question for you guys. If you had the chance to do basically the same job you do now, but with a different title for a bit more money, would you take the opportunity. The only down sides are longer traveling (20mins longer) and maybe more hours. It got me thinking of the pros and cons, the pros being more money and a better job title/ description. The downside is that the job I've got now I actually love it, it's cushy and most of the time I'm having a laugh with the managers and customers.
The Quick Brown Fox Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Money makes the world go round. You can't take holidays or pay the mortgage with a laugh from your manager. Same job more money all day for me.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Travelling 20 mins extra shouldn't be an issue although I am used to travelling in excess of 100 miles each way everyday to get to some jobs
Zingari Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 I suppose I'm a naturally cautious person , and from what you say , it doesn't sound worth the risk . It's all according how much " a bit more money" is. I'm not asking you to divulge that
MooseBreath Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Depends how comfortable your finances are now and what benefits the extra money would bring.
kylestyle06 Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 What's been said really. Depends "how much" extra we're talking about.. as money does make the world go round and laughing with your manager will not get you a mortgage,
Guest MattP Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Depends if you are desperate for the money. You don't get many jobs in life you will love so I'd be reluctant to leave unless it was seriously good rise.
Finnegan Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Depends if you are desperate for the money. You don't get many jobs in life you will love so I'd be reluctant to leave unless it was seriously good rise. This a million times over.
FoxesFan100 Posted 5 September 2013 Author Posted 5 September 2013 Thanks for the replies guys, most of what you have said has gone through my mind and I appreciate the help. Money makes a lot of difference to how I live, at the moment it's comfortable but I wouldn't say no to extra money. Arghhhh, why are some decisions more awkward than others. Also TYOTF how do you do that amount of miles, I'd be crying.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Being "happy" in a job, is very important, It depends whether you feel the money outweighs the happiness.
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 More money you earn usually the more you spend anyway so your always playing catch up. Personally id rather keep a smile on my face. I understand the concept of money but at the same time I also see how it can just be an illusion.
purpleronnie Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 the fact its only a little more money and you love your job I wouldn't bother.
yorkie1999 Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Make the move, onwards and upwards. You'll get bored of laughing when you're 50.
Zingari Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Make the move, onwards and upwards. You'll get bored of laughing when you're 50. When you're bored of laughing you may as well be dead.
Guest MattP Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Make the move, onwards and upwards. You'll get bored of laughing when you're 50. Well there's a quote that makes me look forward to getting old. If I ever get bored of laughing you can shoot me.
purpleronnie Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Make the move, onwards and upwards. You'll get bored of laughing when you're 50. WOW depressing.
RobHawk Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 When you say more money - Can you give us a percentage of how much more? You mention more hours - Are you paid hourly or salary? If salary the extra money may not be worth the extra hours plus the extra travelling costs and time! You say an extra 20 mins travelling - is that each way (i.e. 40 mins a day?) is traffic worse meaning more stress etc etc. Is a pros and cons thing here! there seem to be plenty of cons and the 1 pro is more money so it does depend on how much? Or are there better chances for promotion in the new job too?
Bayfox Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 As above. Is the extra traveling 20mins. Or 20mins at best ie not rush hour. And is the extra money for the extra hours or will the extra hours mean even more extra cash? And if your travelling in your own car. Is it worth the extra fuel wear and tear etc.
FoxesFan100 Posted 5 September 2013 Author Posted 5 September 2013 RobHawk if I could give a percentage it's an extra 16.13% wage increase over the year. I'm working hourly so there's a high chance of overtime and extra hours on top of the contracted hours, if that makes sense. It's exactly the same job area but for another company. The traveling altogether would be 40mins extra which isn't too bad, just an extra bus trip I guess, I doubt traffic would be bad, plus there would be some days I'd drive and parking wouldn't be too bad.
Zingari Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 I'm a bit out of touch , but why is a better "job title/description" of any importance?
Orkneyfox Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Most morning I drive a couple of mile to work, other days I fly 2 or 3 hundred. Is it 20 minutes each way?, how much more more money is it, will the extra traveling wipe out the rise? Are you going to be in charge of the same people you have banter with now, that can often be tricky? Is this the last time this sort of chance will come up? Do you need a higher salary to attract a mortgage?
Captain... Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Depends if you are desperate for the money. You don't get many jobs in life you will love so I'd be reluctant to leave unless it was seriously good rise. Agree with that. If you enjoy your job then you really shouldn't leave it for money. You could always talk to your current boss about a rise. If you can have a laugh with him then you can probably talk to him, say you've been offered this job for more money, but would prefer to stay in your current one, see if he can bump you up, or give you some more hours, or see what the prospects for promotion are. I've done this once and got a 15% increase.
Jon the Hat Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 If they are paying more money there must be a reason. A new job which shows development / promotion is an important thing to have on your CV if you have a goal of longer term progression up the ladder.
Bettsj2 Posted 5 September 2013 Posted 5 September 2013 Its rare to find a job that you love so dont give it up If it doubled your salary fair enough but for the money your talking about, dont do it.

My 'brother in law' works for AM Norris, for the past 2 years hes drove to St ives in camebridge to his site. They get paid neither direction
