broughtonblue Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 So, watching last night of the proms. Is the conductor really needed. All the instrument players seem to know when to start and stop on there own. Indeed they very rarely even look up from their music sheets.

Corky Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 Of course they are. Sensational music acts like the Crystal Palace Ultras have one, so obviously one is required at the Proms.
The Doctor Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 How are you supposed to record it or broadcast it without a conductor? These things work with electricity y'know - it's like magic, but with conductors.

If you get the chance watch maestro BBC reality show, celebs learning how to conduct, shows how important the conductor is.

I am Rod Hull Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 Enlighten Just think of them as musical referees
Corky Posted 7 September 2013 Posted 7 September 2013 You're not fit to conduct The conductor's a willy puller My mate's a conductor That sort of thing.
broughtonblue Posted 7 September 2013 Author Posted 7 September 2013 Just think of them as musical referees I fear the worst then!!!!

Fox92 Posted 8 September 2013 Posted 8 September 2013 Nigel Kennedy in his villa (agbonlahor) shirt, brilliant! I was loving the fact everyone was in suits and he had a Villa shirt on.

All the instrument players seem to know when to start and stop on there own. Indeed they very rarely even look up from their music sheets. In a way you are right. Most orchestras could play pretty well on the night without a conductor because of the practice and rehearsing done beforehand. It's pretty much the same as asking if a football team needs a coach.Probably once the match starts they become less important to the play. Conductors just give a little extra personality to the performance on the night.
Captain... Posted 8 September 2013 Posted 8 September 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/musictv/maestro/video/peter-snows-first-attempt/ Watch this to see what happens when a conductor doesn't get it right
Rincewind Posted 8 September 2013 Posted 8 September 2013 What's the definition of conduct? Not looked but thought it may give a better reason. Not watched any of the proms. Prefer to listen when it's classical. I don't think the players play all the time. There are breaks for solos so I would imagine they want to resume. Just wild guessing from top of my head. Am I close?
Merging Cultures Posted 8 September 2013 Posted 8 September 2013 I've played trombone in many different orchestras, brass bands, small ensembles and contemporary groups. Often the small ensembles and contemporary groups do not use conductors. Often because you are able to look at each other and keep in time, also a lot of contemporary music uses on tempo and may have a steady drummer keeping time. Larger bands and orchestras need someone keeping time. Especially in a large concert hall. You can't rely on just listening to the music, you maybe hearing an echo. So, you play to the conductors beat. Also, music often has different speeds, volumes, styles, and you can't guess how quickly/slowly/loud/gentle the other guy 30ft away is going to be playing. The conductor coordinates how everyone will play a piece and can give you an evil stare if he thinks you are too loud, soft, hard, aggressive etc. Typically, when you are not playing you are counting your 'rests', but the conductor can help you come in at the right time. They will often look your way and wave their hand in your direction. Very helpful to make sure you don't come in wrongly. You'd be surprised how easy it is to look up quickly and play music. Often you are looking many bars ahead from where you are currently playing, so you are able to keep an eye on the conductor.
