Time to drop Nugent?

Recommended Posts

I don't want this thread to be all doom and gloom. We are still top of the league etc, etc but one thing concerns me. Nugent. Another game goes by where he doesn't get on the scoresheet. Missing too many crucial chances game after game. Got a feeling this season could come down to goal difference yet again and we need to be slotting these chances away. Not to say we aren't scoring, but it frustrates me at the amount of chances Nugent is wasting.

We have a bench full of strikers chomping at the bit and it feels to me that maybe Nugent is being given a free pass into the starting 11. Surely any other player would have been dropped by now. Hes not a bad player and runs his heart out, but it has to be Wood, Schlupp or Taylor-Fletcher for me against Brighton. Nugent needs time to get his act together. Maybe a game or two on the bench will make him realise he is not untouchable.

Thoughts?

I know where you're coming from, but the other strikers aren't scoring either. Fair play Vardy (and I like/rate him). scored two on Saturday, but he misses just as many chances imo.

Wood is a good player, probably needs to start games rather than coming from the bench. Perhaps.

Vardy is offering so much more than Nugent at the moment though (can't believe in writing that).

Nugent needs at least a week off. A fit and in-form Nugent is a huge asset but the listless one we have seen recently is feeble.

One week we all say Nugent is our best striker and find ourselves praising him i.e Ipswich.

Now tonight people want him dropped again, and will probably be calling him shit.

How opinions change.

You are of course making the common mistake of assuming that it's the same people saying both things.

I'd have thought it's pretty obvious to anybody with a pair of eyes that Nugent is a very good player at this level who has been out of form for a long time.

Not calling him shit at all. But I think Ipswich is the only game he has shone all season for me. That's not good enough. Most of his goals so far have come from penalties. He looks tired and out of form. Chris Wood needs to be given a chance.

Fascinating how many people were clamouring for Wood to come on tonight. He's the answer, many were crying. Yet he comes on and makes no difference.

Fair play, Nugent's form is very patchy. But I think Wood is just an average striker. If we were to drop Nuge, id rather replace him with someone better.

Finally, why is no-one mentioning Vardy? Tonight he was apparently absolutely fookin awful...

Did well against Ipswich and for whatever reason keeps getting picked for the first eleven by our management.

Nothin personal and critisism is of course perfectly fine but we dont need sections of fans calling for our own players heads and spreading any negativity against our own because only more will come of it with some fans.

Were still first and were still having a tidy season so far, roast some chestnuts or somethin ;)

You were right first time.

Tune in next time after the Brighton game to see if we should be booking the promotion parade right now as we look so good or if the wheels have completely fallen off and we've bottled promotion forever.

I do believe it's time to give Wood a chance again, he isn't a bad player. Just hope if he does play, we don't go all direct because it isn't his game.

Our best striker is on loan at Millwall though

Corky Corky!!!

If you see this, Mark_w has hacked your account.

Love Kingfox.

Wont let me quote for some reason, but Col, don't you think it is sometimes harder to come on with not long left and make an impact. I think it takes players like Wood time to get into the game and so far this season he's had a few minutes here and there. Would like to see how he plays if he starts - something which has been a rarity so far. Lets be honest, he cant be much worse than Nugent on current form. Most players would have bounced off scoring two at Ipswich. Nugent seems to have dipped back to his previous form.

Yawn....if we had won 1-0 tonight this wouldn't have been posted. This team has got us top of the league and Nugent has been a permanent fixture of it.

Thats not true actually. Ive wondered about Nugent for a while. He missed some cracking chances against Millwall. Last season he would have finished them. This season he hits them at the keeper. Its not about him being a scapegoat. They were all crap tonight. But we lost because we didnt score another goal. Vardy has generally been in good form at the minute and deserves his place. I think Nugent needs a game or two off, so we can showcase some other talent and he can get his act together in time for a tough festive period, thats all.

I'd start Wood on Saturday definitely. Still don't think Nugent is as bad as people are making out, though he was poor again today. Could have had a goal but for a great save mind you.

Nice to see the mood in camp has swung my way after a bad performance, another poster mentioned fickletalk?

Very true.

One week starting arguments with myself and other people who say he should be dropped,

Making excuse after excuse,

1 game later and "yeah maybe we should drop him a bit"

Love it,

Said it before and I'll say it again,

I hope I'm proved wrong, but he's been more cold than hot this season, and half of last season.

I praised him for his workrate last game even though he could of scored 2,

Tonight he was same old nuge, fvcking lazy, not bothering to try and make things happy, once again vardy chasing everything.

The only thing I will say for nuge tonight, the whole team were off tonight, I forgive them though because they've been more hot than cold.

Hope I'm proved wrong but I maintain (as we all know) sell whilst we can and attempt to find a replacement, at the end of the day if we find a player who can score penalties but doesn't offer much else for 75 mins of every game, we wouldn't have lost or gained much, but it's a gamble if take, I trust Nigel In the transfer market.

Unless of course nugent manages to bag 4-6 this month, and I may be swung.

I like an in form nugent, and even when not scoring think he offers a lot to the team, but he needs to be left out of the team for a few games.

I think the way he played tonight is indefensible, and if I was Chris wood and didn't start ahead of him Saturday, I would be very disappointed, and I would start to think I didn't have a future here, as if a striker who was playing in front of me can play that bad and not be dropped, what chance would I have.

Again I am not using nugent as a scapegoat but he's not been great for a while, and wood deserves a chance to prove himself, and hopefully nugent will come back hungry, and rested, and find some form.

Again.... what about Vardy who I say again, was apparently dogshite tonight?

He's not that natural goal scorer he was at conference level, but he makes things happen, and for that he is superior to nugent, from a goal scoring point nugent is well off form from open play, but is the more natural of the 2,

Chris wood needs to get some starts, and I'd like to see a loan striker in of some sort or some movement to sign another providing we ship Waghorn out, or ssl to make some space for financial movement.

Col, they were all dogshite tonight. But Im not basing this on tonight alone. Im basing this on the last 6-7 games. For me, Vardy has been brilliant this season. His pace and never say die attitude has been great and he has scored some important goals. If he had taken Nugents penalties, Vardy would be well into double figures and where would Nuge be? Nugent had a good game against Ipswich and he is NOT a bad player by any means. He runs around causing problems, but he cant finish at the moment, and that is an issue, especially when we play good teams like Burnley and QPR. I want Nugent to play a massive part in this season, but he doesn't deserve a place right now. For me tonight was just an off-game for Vardy whereas for Nugent, its been a regular thing. I don't view him as a scapegoat but Wood should take his place against Brighton.
