England's best World Cup goals

BBC Sport looks back at some of England's most memorable goals at past World Cup finals, following a successful qualification campaign for Brazil 2014 by Roy Hodgson's team.

Highlights include Sir Geoff Hurst's famous goal in the closing stages of the 1966 World Cup final, David Platt's extra-time winner against Belgium in 1990, and David Beckham's free-kick against Colombia in 1998.

England made it through to the 2014 World Cup after beating Poland 2-0 at Wembley to finish top of Group H.

World Cup 2014: 100 great World Cup moments - 99 days to go

BBC Sport counts down 100 of the greatest World Cup moments, as the 2014 tournament in Brazil draws nearer.

Today looks back to the 1994 World Cup, when Diego Maradona produced a demonic celebration after scoring against Greece.

Maradona subsequently tested positive for ephedrine doping and was banned from the tournament, with Argentina eliminated in the second round.

Is anyone aware as to why Diego Costa, who has already made 2 appearances for Brazil in his career was allowed to change allegiance to Spain and make his debut last night?

I was always under the impression that once you were capped by a country you were tied to them for the rest of your career.

I think that counts only for competitive games - Costa featured in two friendlies for Brazil.

That's a ridiculous rule.

Shame on him as well, like Thiago, for turning his back on his country.

It happens quite often, though. Players want to play, especially on an international level, and if they feel like they're facing too much competition in their respective position, they're sometimes more than glad to switch countries. Some may call that arrogant and/or thankless, others only logical.

Would you have seen Scolari picking Costa over Neymar, Fred or Pato in a Brazil starting line-up?

I agree that it is ridiculous, especially considering that Costa only just got Spanish citizenship in September last year. I personally think it's a farce that a player can play two games for one nation and then swap to another nation of which neither of his parents have citizenship in, even if the two games were just friendlies.

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

I can see where you're coming from - Scolari's decisions aren't always the most logical ones. Fred, obviously his prime darling, is still laboring from his injury last September (keeping him out of the picture for about three months): He received another knock to this thigh about a month ago before the Fluminense-Flamengo game and still has yet to play in a competitive match.

Leandro Damião is rumoured to be the first on the list to replace Fred - even though the former has his own injury history.

Absolutely love this

BBC Sport counts down 100 of the greatest World Cup moments, as the 2014 tournament in Brazil draws nearer.

Today looks back to a 1986 second-round clash when midfielder Manuel Negrete produced some incredible acrobatics to score a wonder goal for hosts Mexico against Bulgaria.

Fred was really impressive in the Confeds but I don't buy for one second that he'd keep Costa out. Costa would walk into this Brazil side.

It's all gone a bit quiet for Damiao now. I honestly couldn't tell you who he plays for.

There is more striker competition for Spain than Brazil.

For Spain you have Negredo, Llorente, Villa, Soldado and Torres who all play in England, Spain or Italy.

For Brazil you have Fred, Jo, Pato and Damiao who all play in Brazil.

Llorente hardly ever features. Same goes for Villa.

And what does it matter where footballers play? As long as it is on a regular basis in the highest division of one of the bigger leagues in the world, who cares?

Pato and Damiao hardly ever play for Brazil tbh.

It would go in Diego Costa's favour that he's scoring goals in one of the top leagues in the world while his potential competition isn't.

That's not so hard, isn't? They don't start playing competitive football again in Brazil until April. lol

What I'm saying is that the Brazilian league is a step below the Spanish league.

Diego Costa's only real competition for the #9 spot would be Fred.

Apart from the leading pack in Spain (Barcelona, Atlético, Real Madrid), the Brazilian league is just as good and star-studded.

The only negative thing I can say about the Campeonato is the crowd troubles and the violence between fans.

Fred has no competition - Scolari wants the guy as THE identification figure (after Fred did so well at the Confederations Cup).

Hence Costa having to match up against the other (top) national squad strikers of Brazil, such as Jô, Pato, Neymar or Damião.

Those strikers lol

Don't think I've ever seen a weaker Brazil forward line.

Amazed at no Felipe Luis.

Probably have one of the best defences in the world, though, which is a weird thing to say about Brazil. Shit strikers, great back four?!

Definitely goals from their midfield / wide forwards, though.

Worst Brazil side I can remember.

Then again I said that at the Confederations before they took Spain apart.

Think i'd play;

Cesar

Alves Miranda Silva Marcelo

Fernandinho Paulinho

Hulk Oscar Neymar

Fred

Might be difficult seeing as Miranda isn't going.
