Finnegan Posted 18 December 2013 Posted 18 December 2013 It'd be tidy but it'd be a long way off world cup winning, not that it was you suggesting that to be fair, Ted. You'd basically want, what, Serbia's defense, Bosnia's keeper, Croatia's midfield and Montenegro's strikers? If they didn't all kill each other that's a quarter final there! (Probably beating England in the process!!)

(Probably beating England in the process!!) Yes, maybe a bit wishful thinking on my part! But the 1990 Yugoslavian team were immense and really could have gone all the way had they not unluckily lost to Argentina in the 1/4 finals. If the country hadn't broken up they could have gone a couple of steps further in 94, I'm not sure that Italian team had any more talent in it than the Yugoslavia in the early - mid 90s.

(Probably beating England in the process!!) Totally agree but I don't think they'd be too dissimilar to the likes of Belgium perhaps. Quarter-final (possibly Semi-final) material. I think Vucinic and Mandzukic up top. Other than that, I'd have to agree with you. TBH, there was never really any conflict in any of the teams before. You look today... Vidic and Januzaj get on at United, Kolarov, Nastasic, Dzeko at City and so on.

It is a real shame as I feel that they really could have done some damage at Euro 92 if sanctions weren't put in place. Was unlucky getting knocked out in '90 on penalties. You were looking at a side with Stojkovic, Savicevic, Prosinecki, Pancev, Mihajlovic, Jarni, Suker, Mijatovic all coming into their early peaks.

You don't have to be too much older for it to be very raw, though. It was the Serb and Croat coaches - both ex players from the 90s - that were recently involved in stories about wishing death on each other / their families wasn't it? Stimac wasn't it?

First I've heard of that but Stimac has openly stated his views on Serbs before. I have many Bosnian and Croatian friends. It's a lot easier for the younger generation. Many lived in harmony for years and it wasn't the nationalism that pulled it apart but more religion. Stupid.

Would Zlatko Zahovic have been around then as well? Some player.

Father Ted Posted 18 December 2013 Posted 18 December 2013 Would Zlatko Zahovic have been around then as well? Some player. Nope, he was more around 2000, pretty sure he played for Slovenia at Euro 2000
Langston Posted 18 December 2013 Posted 18 December 2013 Nope, he was more around 2000, pretty sure he played for Slovenia at Euro 2000 Yeah, he definitely did but I thought he was getting on a bit by that time.
Finnegan Posted 18 December 2013 Posted 18 December 2013 Yeah, he definitely did but I thought he was getting on a bit by that time. He'd have been around, yes, he played for Slovenia from the start in 92 after the split.
Dan Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 You're right. Croatia always comes under much less scrutiny than other countries in the Balkans. Maybe it's this image of sun-kissed islands or the (erroneous) view of them as the victims of the big bad Serbs. Everytime I'm there they seem to be extremely aggressive and nationalistic. Always been a good team though. Can you imagine how good Yugo could have been? We may even have seen a Balkan World Cup winner..... I was thinking that about Yugoslavia. They'd be up there with the Italys and Hollands for me.
Dan Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 Maybe in the wrong thread but England announce three friendlies... Peru (30th May, Wembley) Ecuador (4th June, Miami) Honduras (7th June, Miami)
Stadt Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 Should be three wins there, it'd be nice to be in Miami for those
The Blur Posted 17 January 2014 Posted 17 January 2014 Norway had just played in two friendlies and Sweden and Poland played each other in a friendly today- what is going on???
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 17 January 2014 Posted 17 January 2014 Norway had just played in two friendlies and Sweden and Poland played each other in a friendly today- what is going on??? There leagues are in a winter break aren't they so easy enough to arrange friendlies.
The Blur Posted 17 January 2014 Posted 17 January 2014 There leagues are in a winter break aren't they so easy enough to arrange friendlies. Fair enough- I wondered about the Scandinavia link so it made sense. I know Poland is not in Scandinavia by the way haha.
Dan Posted 18 January 2014 Posted 18 January 2014 Wouldn't be certain of beating Ecuador but I fancy us to beat the other two. It's pretty obvious that Ecuador is to prepare us to Uruguay and Honduras is to prepare us for Costa Rica.
MC Prussian Posted 18 January 2014 Posted 18 January 2014 Already looking forward to teams sweating it out in Manaus. Temperatures in between 23 degrees centigrade (average low) and 30 degrees (average high) - every day, every month, every year! This heat coupled with the strong humidity there can kill athletes if they're not careful.

ScouseFox Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 Falcao got fûcked up tonight, nothing official yet but taken off and Twitter journos are saying 6 months minimum for the injury. IF that's the case then there's another not going to the World Cup. .
Dan Posted 23 January 2014 Posted 23 January 2014 If England were to qualify in second then the chances are we'd play Colombia. Shame to have him missing if so, excellent player in probably his biggest ever tournament.
