Kitchandro Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 When our fans starting doing those Sam Bailey chants all I could think was I wonder what face MattP is pulling right at this moment As for the game, I was a bit disappointed. I thought some of the changes would be our biggest weaknesses and sure enough they were. But overall, we just didn't give ourselves a chance in the first half, which is a bit of a shame. We did not do the basics and even if you take into account the quality we're up against, we underperformed. In a game like that you hope to get in their faces and give them little time on the ball. Unfortunately there wasn't much chance of that with the lazy Taylor-Fletcher in for the terrier that is Vardy, or with King instead of James. Nugent seemed very isolated and if anything, Man City wanted it more than us. We lost possession way too easily in ways that we would never do in a league match. We played the occassion, and basically did everything we didn't want to do when we're such underdogs. There were some decent performances, notably Schmeichel and Knockaert. Nugent did ok considering he had no chance with us hoofing it up to him on his own. Most of tonight isn't worth concerning ourselves with - we didn't play to our best and the result was expected regardless. But the biggest thing to take from tonight is just how bad Wasilewski is at right back. He hasn't got a clue. Their second goal was due to him not watching his man or even being close to where he should have been, after a very similar attack that he got away with due to Schmeichel's point blank save. Their 3rd also came from his side. Please Nigel, stop playing him there. We weren't embarrassed by the scoreline but let's be honest, Man City took it easy on us. It confuses me that people were encouraged by the performance and I think it does us a disservice. We have performed far better than that this season, and there are several players out there tonight who set themselves higher standards. I mean, it may be Man City but we can still make 5 yard passes, we can still remember to take the ball with us when we try and take someone on, we can still get our positioning right and we can be a bit calmer in possession. But we didn't really do those things well enough in the first half to give us a shot of making it difficult then - like we did in 2011. It's no shame to be ripped apart by a side that good. But I feel we could have offered more tonight, we could have made a better fist of it. Could certain players have shown more determination and effort? Yes, I think so.
Monsell1976 Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 But to be fair they played a much "weaker" side and treated it as if it was a kick about on the park, it was nothing but a warm up for most of them.Agreed, once it went to 3-0 they took it easy.
Lobsterboyuk Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Not too bad as the result stands, we can't feel crushed or humiliated at 3-1. Frustrated to see GTF start up front and Was at RB, would've preferred Vardy/Moore instead with Schlupp replacing the Jamie at half time. Positives, second half midfield and a great performance from Lloydy.
kingfox Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Expected nothing else really, simply outclassed. We were more competitive towards the end of the game after we scored, but that's about it. Thought Miquel looked ok, James played well, and I thought Schlupp did alright when he came on as well. Konchesky was shit, Drinkwater was shit, Dyer was rubbish despite scoring, Nugent was shocking again, and less said about Taylor-Fletcher the better, after the fans reaction, I doubt he will play much more football for us. As for the fans, atmosphere was flat until we scored. And these 12-16 year olds, who just came for the fun of it, pissed me off no end. Had two next to me, talking utter shite, kept banging chairs, turning around talking to their mates, while some walking to the ground thought Ben Marshall signed for Sheffield Wednesday. Anyway roll on QPR.
inckley fox Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 There were some decent performances, notably Schmeichel and Knockaert. Nugent did ok considering he had no chance with us hoofing it up to him on his own. Really?
Haydos Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 We could have lost that by 6. We escaped with a modicum of credibility - we looked up for it during a period in the 2nd half when they relaxed. Not half as damaging as it could have been. A couple of our lads leave with theiir reputation enhanced. Onwards to QPR and beyond... Wait, there's no 'could have' if we stumble to a draw. "We could have won by 3!" No, you say that on here and you get shot down straight away so I'm not accepting that. We could have lost by 6, but we were a couple of chances away from pulling level as well, not as clear cut as theirs, but a bit more quality and we could have been much closer. It might be fair if we literally shut out and had no chances but we were competitive so like I said, that is bullshit.
Kitchandro Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Really? Yeh. Got one of our few crosses in from the left after beating him, skinned a few players in the middle at one point, looked fairly lively. It was far from his best performance but he didn't look woefully out of his depth like Dyer, Waz or GTF
Babylon Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Tactically we were all wrong and were wide open. They stopped at 3, make no mistake about that. I came away feeling flat. Ive seen so many league cup nights at Filbert St, the ground rocking and us having half a chance of winning. Tonight's game was nothing by comparison. It was men against boys really. And to play GTF in front of Schlupp tonight made no sense to me. We were never gonna win tonight but we could at least have made a game of it. At risk of pissing off the pro Pearson brigade again, frankly Man City were very good and we were garbage. A total anti-climax IMO. On a plus point, at least we made some money out of it.. Do you ever post without taking a pop at people?

If Man City had given it their all, we would have lost by 6. Sorry, but tonight, that is how it was. We were competitive only right at the start of the 2nd half and for the last 20 minutes - long after we were beaten. Sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up and say thanks to the opposition for taking it easy. It wasn't our night. As for chances, I can't remember a shot until the 2nd half.

Nift Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Big difference between 2011 and tonight:Jo and Dzeko.

It might be fair if we literally shut out and had no chances but we were competitive so like I said, that is bullshit. I'm not feeling massively negative about tonight to be honest, but do you REALLY believe we were 'competitive' in that game? And there is a BIG difference between a fan saying that HIS side could have won by three, and a fan saying the OTHER side could have won by six. One is very easy to say, the other slightly less comfortable. I knew a guy who was always telling me that he was getting lucky with women, which was either a lie or hugely exaggerated, then one day he turned up and said he was gay. And I believed him. It just wasn't the sort of thing a man would make up. So yes, we could easily have lost by six or seven tonight had they not taken their foot off the pedal, and it wouldn't have been undeserved. Against Burnley we probably didn't deserve to score three, even if some of us might like to pretend that we did.
The Quick Brown Fox Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 James is a great player he needs to start on sat. I think Jeff did really well too. Disappointing result but not surprising.
Dan Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 I'll get one thing straight - I was not genuinely expectant of anything other than a defeat tonight, so I'm not livid at the result. I haven't read this thread but I've got to question anyone who thought we played well. The last 20 was a lot more like it, but we were lucky to only be 3 down going into that. If it wasn't for Schmeichel we'd have been 5 or 6 down by half time. Not livid by any means but if we play anything like that on Saturday we'll be beaten by a similar scoreline. Fair play to Man City though. Some of their players are just ridiculous. Even Barcelona will struggle dealing with the likes of Silva. But nah, no good tonight. I don't feel let down but I ain't pretending we were decent, because it was 70 minutes of basic errors.
MC Prussian Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 But to be fair they played a much "weaker" side and treated it as if it was a kick about on the park, it was nothing but a warm up for most of them. Can't really call their line-up today "weaker". They pretty much have all areas covered twice, if not three times with their players. They're taking the competition much, much more serious than we did tonight. It wasn't just the difference in individual talent, it was also part down to willpower. We hardly showed up for the first 75 or so minutes, partly down to that "weaker" side not letting us have one sniff at goal.

He gave the ball away time and again, notably before conceding the free kick for the first goal and for the second goal. It was no surprise that he was hauled off at HT. Dyer at least was a threat and worried them with his pace.

It was far from his best performance but he didn't look woefully out of his depth like Dyer, Waz or GTF I don't really agree re: Knockaert, but the game did show that he'll be able to take on and beat Premier League defenders as well. I just think his part in our conceding the first two goals really underlined some of the key flaws in his game. He has to start learning, and fast, if he wants to be a top flight player someday. However I think you're spot on regarding the other three. The only way Dyer can possibly have come in for praise from anyone this evening is if they ignored the whole game apart from two bookings and a goal. The mind boggles. Not livid by any means but if we play anything like that on Saturday we'll be beaten by a similar scoreline. Exactly how I feel. Well said.

Guest Col city fan Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Funny how people's opinions so vary on Knocky. I genuinely thought he was the only player that looked any sort of threat in the first half. Yes he made errors, but they all did.
stevelcfc Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Only major disappointment for me was how shit WE as fans were, it was a sell out in front of one of the best teams going, should've been far better, pisses me off when the pockets try and get something going, and the dudes who decide to go in suits sit arms folded, moaning about the fact we ended up going back to Kasper from the kick off.

In fairness I can't remember his part in the second goal, if he gave it away for that then fair enough, since I do remember the first goal and he was at fault for giving away a silly free kick. Naivety aside I thought he was one of the better players on the ball in the first half, though that isn't saying much I suppose.
Beliall Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 listening on 5live its hard to tell how we played, especially with robbie effin savage waffling about crap non stop, but it didnt sound like a cup tie until we scored. I feel 3-1 is a great result against man city, whatever 11 they play. would have been nice if we made them work harder but there you go.

At both ends, perhaps, but at least things happen with him on the field. Mind you, I still think he had a horrible evening.
Bert Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Had a right idiot sat near me. Anyway, they were just better than us. Simple as that. But you've got to expect that. We didn't help ourselves at times, and although we were outclassed we weren't disgraced. A few good individual performances and a spirited 20 minutes at the end of the game are the positives we need to take into Saturday.
Dickov22 Posted 17 December 2013 Posted 17 December 2013 Funny how people's opinions so vary on Knocky. I genuinely thought he was the only player that looked any sort of threat in the first half. Yes he made errors, but they all did. After his piece of skill on the left hand side I said to my Dad if we don't go up, we'll lose him to a Premiership side. He frustrates and was probably at fault for both goals. People forget how young he is though. He will learn
