January - massive month

Whatever happens this season, January may well be the month that determines our success or failure.

With key players out of contract at the end of the season, it is clear that come January these players can start to talk to other clubs from 1st January and get their following seasons arrangements put in place.

So, it could be a situation that come the end of January, we have not engaged with these players contract wise and they have all sorted their contracts out elsewhere. This obviously would not be good for us at that point as would they really then put in the desired performances when they know their futures lay elsewhere?

Should we engage with these players? Well I would think even if we did, with the likes of them all, the money we will now offer would be considerably less than the big contacts they are currently on and so that would create a negative and they would certainly still want to look around.

I suppose we could buy replacements for these players in January and put these end of contract players in the reserves. However this also is not a good option as I am not sure we could do this due to the financial implications. Also we really don't want to buy players in January when we might need to invest again in better options at the end of the season if we were to progress.

So January is massive and what the club decides to do or not to do will have massive implications.

Do they know what to do? I am not sure, it is certainly not clear cut and in all honesty I really don't know what the best situation would be.

I think the club won't engage. I think they will leave all negotiations until the end of the season and then we will know for sure who we want and we will know what league we are in.

If they take this approach though, there will clearly be some players that have negative reactions to our non engagement and it certainly will affect performances of a few of these players.

Also, if we engage with some and not others, the ones who we don't engage with will clearly know they are not wanted.

I know what I would do if I were a player, I certainly would be asking my agent to get me offers and my priority would be to sign my next three year deal. Yes I might be thinking if I stayed I might get a better deal if we were to go up, but whatever the situations their minds will be full of if, buts and maybes.

We also have a manager that is out of contract. He also will be looking at the next three years and he may well make the decision to move elsewhere if he thinks he won't be offered a contract should we start to fall down the league?

I just think this uncertainty has come at a really bad time. It is nobodies fault, but is one that does not have easy answers. I certainly don't blame the club and I won't if it goes wrong as you can't say there is an easy option. But whatever unfolds, January will be a key month to our future, even if on the outside it looks like not a lot has happened.

Can we get December over and done with please?! Still some big games left this month and less distractions re: contracts the better!

Could you use the word 'engage' more next time please...

We still have a fourth of December in front of us - bit premature to talk about January already when we've got some crucial fixtures ahead of us in the next one and a half weeks still.

every players ambition is to play in the premier league and none of our current players if they leave will go to a team with a better chance of getting to the prem than us so i would like to think that any player out of contract will be more focused on performing for us and earning a new contract than looking elsewhere. Even with new contracts offered on less money they still prob wont get more money elsewhere. I say leave the contracts to sort themselves out as a player who doesnt have the desire to play for us and wants to move somewhere else is more than welcome to go and somebody who shows they want to play for the club will sign on the dotted line.

February, March and April are pretty massive too.

But what about May, June, July, August, September, October, November???

They feel so ignored!

Love it....

For months December has been the massive month, now we've pretty much thrown it away so far, All of a sudden january is our massive month

Three games to go - could still turn it into a 'fair-to-middling' month.

This is whole f**king season is massive!, for the clubs future it could be the start of a new dynasty of success or it could prolong our stint in the second tier.

We need promotion (automatically) don't care how we achieve it just get the f**king job done come on Lester!

I thought it was only 1 month before their contract expires they can talk to English clubs, I could be wrong

I'm not sure either to be honest I thought it was anybody.. someone will enlighten us

Every club in every league is in the same position. The numebrs in the squad and the the fact that hardly any player gets offered a contract longer than 3 years means that most clubs must have 6 or so players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.

I don't believe many players will sign a 3 year contract on reduced terms when there is a chance of getting their salary doubled should we gain promotion and keep them. If they don't have the confidence and belief in their own ability to play in the PL then I don't want them here anyway.

Agree,

but hackney, Whether they have the belief and confidence in their own ability, it counts for nothing if they are just not good enough...

and most of them are not  lol

I know city was a game that we cannot judge too much on,

But christ unless we strengthened with 6-7 new players, we would be down by christmas IMO!

LCFC FOX is spot on. Players can only 'talk' to domestic clubs 1 month before their contract expires but can talk to overseas clubs 6 months in advance. Doesn't stop players being tapped up and agents trying to arrange agreements but legally they're not allowed to do it.

It is a massive month and obvious what we need to do! only two wingers and strikers that can't score goals.  Cameron Stewart (free to talk to clubs) and john guidetti on loan for me!

Buying strikers left and right won't do the trick if you don't have midfielders who can provide them with the necessary passes.
