Tielemans63 Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 He sounds boring really who cares. Here's me thinking this was a football forum and we were talking about a manager. Must be in the wrong place is this the xfactor forum? Who gives a fvck what he sounds like he's paid to win matches not fvcking sound good ffs Exactly this. If giving entertaining interviews constituted good management then Ian Holloway would be one of the greats. Amazes me that people actually really do care that our manager is quite dour in interviews when it's totally inconsequential.
Mark_w Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 Am I the only person who doesn't think Holloway's interviews are at all entertaining?
Langley Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 Am I the only person who doesn't think Holloway's interviews are at all entertaining? Depends what he says. Some of the things that he used to come out with were hilarious.
sylofox Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 3pts for an interview. Pearson out we could be top of the league if he was not so boring.
Guest Col city fan Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 Am I the only person who doesn't think Holloway's interviews are at all entertaining? No... I find his interviews almost weird. Ive never found Holloway funny. Whatever anyone says, IMO Pearson's interviews this season reflect a more calm and considered persona than last season.
cjslcfc Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 If anything I find Nige's interviews hilarious now. The interview today went along the lines of: Stringer: "Young french player been linked with club, Riyad Mahrez, and there's reports in France that we've made an offer for him. Anything you can tell us?" Nige: "Not really, do you want to tell me a bit about him" Stringer: " 22, Algerian-French, Plays for Le Havre, out of contract in June, think he plays wide right, left footed, Anthony Knockaert part 2" Nige: "May well be" Stringer: "Fancy him?" Nige: "Who knows, let's find out!" Stringer: "Sounds good doesn't he?" Nige: "Not bad" :xmaslaugh:
Dan Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 The only season you could accuse Pearson of being overly defensive and boring at times was 09/10 - and that was because we had a squad that technically was nowhere near as good as where it actually ended up in the league. We blitzed League One with attacking football and regularly hit 4 goals. Since he's been back we're scoring far more. He tends to get the balance just right for me. Delighted we stuck with him.

Pearson is a very funny man - a WUM, if you like. His humour is so bone dry that it should be sold in packages marked "dessicated bones". He is quite determined to give away no needless information whatsoever. He doesn't see it as his role to provide entertaining interviews, he sees his role as building a good team/squad and managing it with as much privacy as possible. He's absolutely right in adopting this approach and is doing an excellent job, so far....remember, every season with NP, the squad/team does better - and every season NP has learned more. I've no idea exactly how much potential he has as a manager, but suspect that it is pretty high... As for Stringer, I bet his bowels turn to over-diluted jelly at the prospect of trying to squeeze some info out of him....and that's extremely entertaining.
Grewks Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 If Nigel wasn't being interviewed by such a moron you may find him more 'fun'. But Fergie was never fun, and like Nige at times he was an arrogant ****. As for the part about defensive football...are you serious? The only time we played more defensive was the first play-off season, for 2 reasons. 1 - Our squad was inferior to newcastle, west brom etc. 2 - We lacked the ability to 'outscore' opponents, especially after losing fryatt, so we had to try and 'out defend' sides if you get my drift.

Thracian Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 It's been referred to in the past that Pearson's still a youngish manager learning his trade. Sometimes he's not quite had the players, others he's not quite used them to the best effect. In consequence there have been bad patches and some of us have been critical of the reasons. The second half of last season was, I believe, a shock to Pearson's system but Pearson seems to have learned from it and, tactically, seems to have had a few more pluses than he got last season. We're stronger in depth now too, we genuinely seem to be trying to win our matches and Pearson seems to know what is more or less his best starting line-up which hasn't always seemed the case in the past. To some, his after-match interviews might not matter but, to me, it's a vital part of being professional and grooming himself to cope with the sustained media pressure that comes with being a Premiership manager. The media are a fact of life and the better you cope with them the easier your life is likely to be unless you're Sir Alex Ferguson and there's not many with his licence. That all adds up to a lot of little pluses and given that we weren't so far off being successful last season, those little things might just see us hit our target this season. Seems to me that the biggest enemy now is believing the bullshit and somehow forgetting we've achieved nothing as yet and have a half-season of challenging games that need to be fully focused on before any prizes are handed out. Pearson will be a happy man but right now it's as important as ever to keep trying to improve the team, the individuals in it and the standards they set in going about their job. Keep attending to detail, keep expecting more and the rewards will come.
Guest shearfox Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 If he gets us promoted he'll be on the same level as Brian Little. He's nowhere near MON yet. Not even close. People seem to forget that we're on our longest spell outside of the top tier ever. We are a big club for this league. Promotion is what you'd expect from any decent manager. It takes a good manager to keep us up, a superb manager to finish top-ten in the prem and win trophies. Pearson hasn't even met the criteria for 'decent' yet so let's not get too excited. You obviously don't realise that we have changed, we aren't that team anymore! Pearson has taken us from our lowest point in history to top of the championship !
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 So negatives will always outweigh positives in your book. That means it's always going to be nigh on impossible to please you. If one disappointing half-season isn't rectified by 3 other good seasons it's barely worth discussing it with you. And that's without even starting on you judging his interviews ffs Right, the previous two seasons have been superb, forgetting the negatives, because they don't count. Pearson has always given the most wonderful interviews, so well done to him. Brilliant!

Haydos Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 Right, the previous two seasons have been superb, forgetting the negatives, because they don't count. Pearson has always given the most wonderful interviews, so well done to him. Brilliant! I think you're missing the point. I'm saying that judging a managers performance based on his interview style is a little bid odd. And that there has been a lot more good play than bad. But don't give as much credit where it's due as you do criticism then it seems you're always going to be unsatisfied/your expectations are too high.
Bayfox Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 We talk about players with "potential" Nigel has tonnes and tonnes of potential as a manager.... He could be the best we've ever had and tbh, I'm slowly expecting him to be edging closer to MON's crown never gonna get anywhere near MON I'm afraid. L1 title great. If we win the championship fine maybe thats a slightly better achievement than a play-off win. But mon did that after about 11 games. So lets call that an equal achievement. But pearson is never gonna lead us to 3 finals and 2 trophies. The game has changed. The top clubs win everything now. Wigan exempt. But the top 4 are there or there abouts nowdays. and even if people can quote this in 5 years time to prove me wrong. My guess is pearson will have spent a lot more than mon got. lets be fair dd cost more than muzzy. Morgan more than lennon. wood more than claridge, marshall and cottee. marshall more than savage. so it will always be relative. for the record I am a big np fan for everything he has done. L1 was great. Tidy up svens mess decent. Cardiff fun. Last year decent. This year ok so far.
Harry - LCFC Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 I seriously hope people aren't suggesting interview performance should play a part in a manager's job security. You can like/dislike a bloke for how he talks to the media, that's fair enough, as long as you realise that it's totally unimportant I've got no problem.

Bayfox Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 We have spent more but times have also changed in terms of valuation of players... Plus a league cup win is a possibility, Birmingham won it not long ago...granted and last years final was an exception. But since we last won it I think liverpool have won 3. Utd 3 chelsea 2 so thats 8 of 13 accounted for. spurs and arsenal have made several final apps as well and if you look at a list of the semi finalists as well it shows a similar picture. I suppose what I'm saying is when mon got us there we were decent if pearson got us there it maybe a little more to do with luck. as for valuations of players true. However martin shopped at oxford, crewe and maylasia. when you shop for utd reserves they tend to cost more.

With regards to transfer fees though. The record back then was a £15m Shearer. It's now nearly 6 times that amount.
MooseBreath Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 You obviously don't realise that we have changed, we aren't that team anymore! Pearson has taken us from our lowest point in history to top of the championship ! Brian Little took us from a side minutes from relegation to promotion in three years. Pretty similar circumstances and a similar result except that Pearson hasn't got us to the prem yet. That's why I say the Little is a better comparison than MON, who had us promoted, winning trophies and playing in Europe by this time in his reign.
Simonb Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 He reminds me of oneill signs a few unknown players or lower league players that do a great job... or ex top team youth in james n drinky where oneill did the same as izzett if we go up and stay up then hes at leadt on par with oneill as its harder to stay in yhe prem nowadays oneill is a legend tho but pearson is approaching yhe same status
Strokes Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 You're right, it is all relative and what you've said does actually make me think how difficult it would be to emulate that again. With regards to transfer fees though. The record back then was a £15m Shearer. It's now nearly 6 times that amount. As a cub even back then our income would have been greater due to the premier league money, so the figures spent show you how prudent oneill was. Just look at what we spent in the 2 years after he left. Ive never been nigels biggest fan, but his greatest characteristics are the ones that made oneill sucessful too, prudence with wages, sticking by his players through thick and thin but discarding ruthlessly those that dont fit.

And knocky from France who was being looked at by Newcastle. Other than that he shops at man utd reserves. vardy is the only one whos come from down the leagues and that cost us a million. if I've missed a few please let me know.
