I'm going to get drunk every day in January, will you sponsor me? It's for charity.

The same arguments came up last year, it is not an achievement, unless you are actually an alcoholic, and things like social media mean we all get a lot more requests for "sponsorship", for basically doing nothing, "will you sponsor me for not shaving my top lip?", "will you sponsor me for not drinking?" on Facebook and e-mails. And that is from people I actually know (I tell them to fvck off too).

Don't drink for January, good for you, but don't expect people who don't know you to part with their hard earned cash. And do (on past form on here) expect to be told where to go.

Will you be donating the money you save for not drinking?

****ing hell, you seem like a right miserable bastard. At the end of the day, it's someone doing something, however small or insignificant in your opinion, for charity. Not everyone can climb mountains, not everyone can run marathons or triathlons. If someone can raise a bit of cash for a good cause by not drinking for a month, or by growing a stupid moustache, then where's the harm in that?

I find it completely pathetic that someone's polite request for a donation has offended you so much that you've felt the need to belittle and humiliate their attempt on a public forum. Did all that righteous anger make you feel like a big man? If you don't want to give, no-one's forcing you. If you think it's such a waste of time, then why even bother clicking on the thread - let alone reply

The phrase 'if you've nothing nice to say, shut the **** up' comes to mind.

if you think you need to quit for a month, you might be an alcoholic

if you cant last a month, you are an alcoholic

I don't agree with that at all. I drink a lot and I wouldn't particularly want to go a month without it but I'm not an alcoholic.

The same as I don't want to stop playing Rugby for a month, or not play video games for a month. I enjoy all of them and have no reason to stop doing any.

do you feel like quitting drinking for a month is a good idea? if no than my post doesnt apply to you.

Idiot, I do wonder if one of the so called 'big hitters' had posted this then they would of had a far lot more donations....

It doesn't matter who posted it the reaction would have been the same, and was the same last year, and the year before, wasn't personal, just trying to rehash the same old arguments quickly so as we could all get on with our lives. People generally don't repsond well to requests for donations on here, especially generic ones, was just trying to explain why.

There wasn't any righteous indignation, I think you get that covered yourself :P , it happens every year, I wasn't trying to belittle or humiliate, like I said just putting the arguments out there. I wasn't going to say anything until the response to ADK. Not trying to stop anyone doing it or anyone from donating, but judging by past requests it wasn't going to get a good repsonse. Not because of who posted it, just because

a) Most people don't see it is that much of an achievement,

b) Most people on here don't know each other personally

c) Most people feel saturated as they get these kind of requests a lot due to social media

d) Most people tend to find January a tight month after the excesses of December

Probably could have worded it better, maybe I should have said nothing, but then he might wonder why he has had no response, at least this way he may understand why people haven't sponsored him.

It's a weird one. I kind of agree with CPF here but at the same time there's no real losers and people end up giving money to charity.

There are a lot of people who do a lot of real work for charity and it sort of feels like it cheapens that. I think CPF put his point across in a dickish manner but the point remains, this is a really cheap thing to do 'for charity'. He's saving himself money (presumably not giving that to charity) and asking people to give money for him being slightly healthier.

It's all well and good if someone is making themselves look like a tit (It's fun), taking part in a sporting challenge (it's hard work), or if someone gives their time for a charity (it's selfless). Giving up drinking for a month is none of these.

Yeah, think I slightly missed the point :P

I basically stopped drinking about 6 mths ago and literally havent missed it.

I had half a can of Carling on Christmas day, didnt really enjoy it, so left it.

What I HAVE started doing is drinking those high caffeine drinks.. Monster and whatavya. Im gonna cut down on them now too.

I think the phrase out of the frying pan and into the fire suits that one!

It's like stopping smoking weed and having heroin instead! Ha.

Best of luck to all of you, but all this grow a moustache in November, don't drink in January is a bit 'sheep' for me. I like drinking. If I was going to give up, I'd choose a time to suit me, not one which has an officially recognised name and period.

All the best though with it though. Why don't you all walk backwards everywhere in April? I've heard all the cool shee errr kids are doing it.

There was something immediately off putting about reading someone asking me to donate money to a charity because they aren't going to drink for a month.

Are you donating the money you save? The question was asked earlier but not answered.

Doesn't anyone just do something good for themselves now without making a massive public fuss about it? I might stop biting my nails. Better make a thread about it. And get sponsored. Wonder if I can find a high horse too. Is MC Prussian finished with his yet? That must have been positively Herculean.

To be fair, as much as I look at the dryathlon and think "ok, so it's not quite running across Canada" it's still, ultimately, raising money for charity which is a good thing. Obviously if the person doing it is acting as if they're some kind of hero then I'll tell them to jog on, otherwise I'll just sit and leave them be. They're still doing more for charity than I am this January. I have the same view with Movember and the like. So what if everyone's doing it? It's still raising awareness.

I'm not sponsoring, mind :D I've had to ration my sponsoring to marathons and above with few expectations of else I'd be a poor man. Everyone's doing them fuckers these days.

By that logic, I'm seeking sponsorship to continue to drink this January. Something which is entirely self serving anyway ( just like not drinking). Why anyone would sponsor someone's lifestyle choice I have no idea.

Yes I will be donating the money I save.

I'm not forcing anyone to donate, I was just asking if anyone would like to donate, which clearly nobody does, that's fine by me, don't know why everyone is getting on their high horse about the matter.

Tbf to Tincy all he's said is he'd be grateful if you'd donate, it's not compulsory and he's not acted superior. I really don't know why people are having a go at him.

Well no, because there is at least some kind of challenge with the dryathlon compared to "I'm going to keep doing exactly the same thing I usually do".

Not too sure why this was made a sticky immediately when this time last year I asked repeatedly for my half marathon fundraising efforts to be made into one as well, but to no avail.

All the best though, raising money for anything is a superb thing to do.

I don't remember that but if I missed you I apologise. At one time last year we had about four of these type of threads at once so maybe it was a case not wanting to overdo it. Again I'm sorry.

Probably best ha ha.

The amount of people I see guzzling that stuff constantly is shocking. Kids wandering to school drinking it being the worst.
