purpleronnie Posted 15 January 2014 Posted 15 January 2014 Man City were playing in League one not that long ago, I would never say never but I would be happy to get us into a top half prem side like under O'Neill... would you be happy if someone just bankrolled us like they have Man city? Not me, I'd rather have a club run like swansea and finish mid table than bankrolled to the top of the prem like man city or indeed blackburn did. Nothing wrong with good investment but it can go all tits up when the money's taken away.
cityfanlee23 Posted 15 January 2014 Author Posted 15 January 2014 Lee, honestly mate, stop with the threads. Sorry mate, thought it was an interesting subject about the way football has gone over the past 10 years but more importantly where we think it may go in the next 10 years... We all knew there would be a 100m player and were not far off it now... So it creates a nice discussion.... And if there is not already a thread about it???
foxfanazer Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 Hasn't that already happened to an extent with us? When was the last time we were underdogs?Ok not underdogs, how to explain it?In only fools and horses (please keep reading ) Del Boy ducks and dives to try and become a millionaire. When he finally achieves that he realises that it was the ducking and diving that made him feel alive, that was the important bit. What the fvck am I talking about?
deanolegend1989 Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 The Del Boy analogy is a good one. Its like chasing a girl, its 'love' you totally want her, shes stunning(Cheryl Cole standard), amazing & fun to be around and just 'perfect'. Not that Ive had a bird that hot but I bet it wouldnt be as good as the chase and you'd get bored if she kept saying 'I love you' despite being the perfect bird. Any thing thats 'easy' and not a challenge in life is an 'anticlimax'.
Guest Col city fan Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 I dont see anything wrong with the thread personally. And I also don't see why we couldn't push for top six or seven in a few years time. Top four? No not really. This usually means those with the real big dosh or those who have built gradually for years, like Everton.
Oxfordfox83 Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 Tricky question. I think it has always been difficult to get into the big boys and stay there (exceptions for the Saudi barons/Russian gangsters) but in my youth teams could have a season of success (Norwich finishing third sticks in my mind). Nowadays, even a season seems ambitious. Swansea, West Brom and this year Southampton all came out of blocks and looked great, but they don't have the depth or wealth to keep going. Once Michu, Lukaku, Lambert get injured or lose form, the team falls away, and even if they didn't, Chelsea pull out Oscar, or Mata to replace Hazard, Cazorla comes in for Ramsey/Wilshere/Ozil and the game starts again at 0-0. As we saw, Man City's reserves are way above the level of most Prem sides and I can't see anyone who didn't finish top 7 3 times in a row coming top 4-it's too big a step. The league is won with your bench, and you can't buy top class subs unless you're already playing in Europe...

Lineker's Left Foot Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 May sound silly but don't see why not. On the board at the minute there is a Chinese guy Shilai Lui who apparently has links to some very wealthy people. I can see the Thais selling us onto the Chinese once we're established then who knows

I think it is just a case of hoping we have not missed the boat, Everton have been building for 10 years and look where they are now, I am afraid if football gets worse before it gets better we would have missed the boat to "Build" without spending 10m sums on young players.. You could argue that southampton are building.. but they are certainly having to pay through the nose for it
hackneyfox Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 I think it could be a bit of both, We need to get richer, (As we will if we are promoted with £140m tv revenues per season) But Also think FFP will bring down the big clubs to earth. Where does 140m TV revenue per season come from? Man U would earn 100m should they win the Premier this season the bottom club will receive 63m, someway short of 140m. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/premier-league/10072297/New-Premier-League-TV-deal-promises-100m-prize-money-for-next-seasons-title-winners.html
Finn Claw II Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 People usually state £120m as this is the TV revenues from one season in the premiership and 4 seasons of parachute payments roughly 60, 23, 18, 9, 9 - I think this is the £140 million figure Where does 140m TV revenue per season come from? They are loaning a striker from another top 4 club and have no back up if he leaves or gets injured. like it or not we will never get near the top 4 as things stand. We dont have the fanbase, the history or a vibrant enough city to attract the calibre of players needed. we would have to be paying silly wages to make it work. And we know what happens when you do that.
ithuriel Posted 16 January 2014 Posted 16 January 2014 If we get up and invest, with a good manager and taking our time, it can be done. Depends on how ambitious the owners are
