Games in hand count for nothing.

The past few days have more or less confirmed this. Our lead on 2nd is now at least 7 points, and on 3rd is a massive 11 points.

I'm not going to assume that we could make it 10 over Burnley because, as I've said, games in hand count for nothing. Old 'Arry's mind games seem to have spectacularly backfired, and we now find ourselves in the enviable position of being at least two "perfect results" from their perspective from being caught.

Granted, one should never count their chickens before they've hatched, but in the same breath I must remind everyone that the widely-touted inevitable victories for 2nd and 3rd for their games in hand have not materialised, and now any sort of result at Forest will put us in a ridiculously good position.

Games in hand count for nothing unless you win them. Let's remember that as we head into the upcoming fixtures - the pressure is not on us, but on the chasing pack. We are where we are on merit, and long may it continue.

I write this a mere hour after watching a procession of happy Blades fans and dejected F*rest muppets passed my house. Let's hope something similar happens on Wednesday!

Up the foxes! :scarf::beer:

And to think that some of us were worried that QPR would have narrowed the gap to five points by this stage.

This division is a long old slog.

If we win at Forest on Wednesday, the gap will be 14 points to third with 15 games to play.

That is, frankly, fvcking enormous.

How has it widened?

It hasn't widened, but both Burnley and QPR have failed to make the gaps up. We're seven points ahead of Burnley with a game in hand and 11 clear of QPR without even playing. It's as good as extending a lead when your rivals fall short in their games in hand.

Another great weekend without even kicking a ball!

The fact that its got to the stage that QPR/Burnley want us to beat Forest on Wednesday tell you everything you need to know!

If we beat Forest it'll be a huge result but I am very wary of games in hand, I don't like them, but it's the way it is and we have to make the most of it.

The danger is (And i've not thought like this for a while - If at all the season) if we lose the lead stays at 7 points, should we then fail to win against Ipswich on Saturday and should Burnley win it could be down to as little as 4 or 5 points, which can soon get eaten up - 7 can easily get eaten up quickly.

It's all if's and but's something I hate speculating on - I've often had a go at people playing devils advocate with if's and but's in the past and here I am doing it myself.

I know that is a pessimistic view, that I don't care much for, but the Forest game has all kinds of potential for us to go on and have our 'blip' that we havn't experienced yet this season, the wheels could come off.

However on the other hand let's stay positive and if we win it really does cement our place at the top of the league and should/could kick on.

C'mon City.

Didn't think of this but of course they will. Haha!

I agree with you Matt, but that's for 2nd place. The gap we have over QPR is more important and substantial. It really is ours to lose

This is very true and something that slipped my mind really.

No i understand that they didnt make use of games in hand but saying the gap has widened is a little over the top.

Not at all, they now have the same number of games played, in fact Burnley have played one extra... maybe widened wasn't the right word to use but better position certainly...

Regarding the points haul this coming week, I'd rather lose against Forest and beat Ipswich, or vice versa, than draw both games. 3 points is better than 2.

Gives us a bit of a freebie on Wednesday.  One of our toughest remaining fixtures and knowledge that even a defeat wouldn't leave us in a bad place after results this weekend.  Anything will be a bit of a bonus so hopefully we'll go out on Wednesday with no fear and look to win.

This division is a long old slog.

Quoted quite a lot from all sorts of media, players, ex players etc as being the hardest league to get out of.

Results some weeks show you why, the favourites don't always win or go up at the end.

You are right three points is better than two, but two points maintains our unbeaten streak and sends a message out to the chasing pack. I would still prefer not to lose, i think.
