Sol Campbell " I Could Have Been Captain For Ten Years If I Was White..."

Sol Campbell has claimed he would have been "England captain for more than 10 years" if he had been born white.

The former England defender makes the claims in an authorised biography serialised by the Sunday Times.(external)

"I believe if I was white, I would have been England captain for more than 10 years - it's as simple as that," said the 39-year-old, who won 73 full caps, including three as captain.

The Football Association is aware of the claims but declined to comment.

Campbell, who made 646 senior appearances for Tottenham, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Notts County and Newcastle United before retiring in 2012, claimed: "I think the FA wished I was white. I had the credibility, performance-wise to be captain.

"I was consistently in the heart of the defence and I was a club captain early in my career."

He added: "I don't think it will change because they don't want it to and probably the majority of fans don't want it either.

"It's alright to have black captains and mixed race in the Under-18s and Under-21s but not for the full national side - there is a ceiling and although no one has ever said it, I believe it's made of glass."

Campbell's three games as England captain were in three friendlies - against Belgium and the Czech Republic in 1998 under Glenn Hoddle's management, and against the United States in 2005 under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

I think these quotes are ridiculous. The position of England Captain was never available simply because of the millions of pounds The FA could make by exploiting Brand Beckham. It also didn't help that Ferdinand emerged from the 2002 World Cup as one of the best centre backs in the world so Campbell was no longer first choice for England. For him to play the race card is disgraceful and disrespectful to anyone who actually has suffered racist abuse/discrimination...

...but anything to sell a book, eh?

There can only be one captain!

Why would he disrespect the captains he served under like this, by suggesting they were only selected because of race?

That will shift a few more books from the stand. Your last sentence is absolutely right. Poor from Campbell in my opinion

He played in an era where there were many good and much better captains in Beckham, Terry and Gerrard. He didnt stand a chance

The blokes a professional victim.

Lets not forget:

1 - This is the bloke who walked out at half-time after being subbed because he was having an absolute shocker.

2 - Claimed he wasn't the father of a child in all the media and even went as far as having a DNA test - which then proved he was the father!

3 - Joined Notts County signing a 5 year contract claiming he couldn't wait for the challenge. He lasted 90 minutes!

4 - Whilst he was at Notts County (for the 90 mins) in League 2, claimed England were very interested in taking him to the World Cup in South Africa.

Maybe, it had nothing to do with skin colour; and whilst he was a good player, he might just have been a bit of a moron who no-one respected enough to play under at national level when there were much better options.

He's deluded!

Ridiculous claim!

It's a shame really, he was always pretty solid in an England shirt and 76 caps is a great achievement. Shame he's gonna tarnish that by being a dick!

Well I won't be buying the book on principal now, and I hope other follow suit. What an egotistical, disrespectful ****. He's not only disrespecting his captains he's also saying the numerous coaching set ups were all racist. When he first made the team Shearer was captain, the Brand Beckham took over, and by the time he's gone Campbell had fallen down the pecking order. Bloke needs to get over himself, and his colour, he's not speci or different because he's black, he's just a footballer like everyone else who's played for England, captain or not.

Beckham was captain on merit, not brand.

True but once The FA realised what a goldmine they were sitting on, no one else got a look in.

Bollocks! Merit on what? His brilliant history as a club captain? England had club skippers in the squad at the time and chose Beckham, the fa knew making a good looking, pop star marrying, Man Utd player captain was a winner.

Still let's not distract from the point Campbell is talking out his arse and is a dick. The captaincy was never gonna be his. Most of those 10 years he talks about we're probably under Beckham, and if I was Campbell I'd be aggrieved Beckham was chosen over me, but it was because he black.

At what point should he have lost the captaincy then? On a side note, I thought McLaren treated Beckham appallingly.

So he can't captain England because Roy Keane was the captain at Man U, behave. Beckham was outstanding when handed the captaincy and did a fine job. Come on who should have got the job instead of Beckham if not Campbell?

Not to mention disrespecting almost the whole country by implying the majority of fans are racist. What an absolute fvcking cvnt. I think we're all used to footballers and others coming out with some controversial crap to try and shift a few books, but calling the whole of england racist is frankly absolutely fvcking disgusting. If it were up to me there would be a law against it and that twat would be going straight to jail. I hope not a single person buys his book now in protest.

So how many managers is he calling racist with this accusation? There may well be a point about Beckham (despite my love for him) but none of this is to do with race for **** sake.

Downright embarrassing for the bloke. If he doesn't have any substantial evidence for these claims I hope he gets slaughtered.

You said he was given it on merit. Merit based on what? Was he a committed player for England? Yes, but so were many others. I think Campbell would have been a better choice, Rio too, Gary Neville, Gerrard once he came into the squad, Ince was still there when got the armband, so him too. But at the time Beckham got it the best candidate was Campbell, and Beckham certainly didn't get it because he was a better leader than Campbell he got it because he was good for sales.

He did earn it on merit, for his performances for England. How come Rio or Neville don't have to be club captains to get it? They weren't at the time ;)

Playing well for England doesn't mean you should be captain. They were both more captain material then Beckham. I'm not questioning Beckham's commitment and passion when playing for England I'm just saying there were stronger characters, more inspirational and dare I say more intelligent people in that dressing room at the time.

Some of Beckham's performances as England captain were the most inspirational I've ever seen. People always seem to want to talk his ability down because of his celebrity status, but he was a brilliant footballer with an incredible workrate and was the number one choice for captain by an absolute country mile. Rio Ferdinand was nowhere near him in any respect. Neville had a good captain-like attitude and workrate but he didn't have anything close to Beckham's ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck and drive the whole team on.

I could not believe it when I read Campbell's comments. Either he should be ashamed and appologise, or I'm deluded in which case I appologise.

I have heard a lot of black players claim some sort of "institutionalized" racism in English football. Barns, Ince, Carlisle and Ferdinand, to name a few of recent times. Maybe they genuinely feel aggrieved, but I cannot see any truth in Campbell's claim.

Spot on! I'm suprised Rio's name can be bought up, he hadn't acheived anything really until Beckham became captain. Can people remember how crap we were in euro 2000 and even worse in the world cup qualification group, until Beckham became captain and sven manager? Now if no credit goes to Beckham, you must attribute it to sven and I know not many will do that.
