There are videos of people chanting to support what he's saying and it's not just him either. Here he has no evidence to back up what he's claiming and unless he's willing to provide some he should drop it immediately.
Zapp Posted 2 March 2014 Posted 2 March 2014 so every time he stepped out on to the pitch, led out by becks.. his mindset was "that should be me leading them out" really poor, he was a quality defender, but if he was so arrogant about it at the time then I wouldn't respect him as a captain becks was a leader for us, put the performances in but always emphasised the team effort. and more importantly, we will never see a captain again who loves playing for England as much as he did. when gerrard retires from the international scene, I fear there will never be a player truly passionate about playing for England again, let alone captaining.

The only centre half that would've (arguably) been "better" than Campbell during that period had it not been for injuries would've been Ledley King. Come to think of it, a fully fit Campbell / King double act at the back would've been the absolute tits.
poggypogpog Posted 2 March 2014 Posted 2 March 2014 I used to think that Big Sol was a genuine "no nonsense" kind of defender. Now think that he is a completely different sort of person that blames others for his own failings to become captain (even though as rightly pointed out above that there were better candidates for the job). The fact that he has made this pathetic statement shows that it was probably a good job that he wasn't given the job as he is clearly a much weaker character than most of us gave him credit for. The only reason I wasn't made captain of England is because I am terrible at football. It's an excuse that isn't far off Big Sols! Would there be a different reaction if Wayne Brown had said something along similar lines? (I know he wasn't in the same league in terms of ability).

You're forgetting a certain Liam Moore Streets ahead of the england youngsters at the minute (keane, stones etc.)

Ridiculous comments, I do think Campbell would have made a good captain, but there was no doubt that Shearer being captain was the right move, and I can't remember that far back to when Beckham became captain, but it seemed like the right choice at the time, and Sven had no reason to change it, then by the time Sven went Campbell was out of the picture really. It may also have something to do with the fact he alienated a lot of fans by the way he moved to Arsenal. I don't know if that would be a factor, but it is something that is more likely to count against someone than skin colour, being hated by a section of the fan base. Despite the ridiculousness of his comments though, he kind of has a point when he says this: Campbell said in his book, which has been serialised in The Sunday Times, that he was particularly upset that Michael Owen was asked to stand in for Beckham as captain on eight occasions under Eriksson.He said: “Owen was a fantastic forward but nowhere near being a captain. It was embarrassing. I kept asking myself, ‘What have I done?’ “I’ve asked myself many times why I wasn’t [made captain]. I keep coming up with the same answer. It was the colour of my skin.†Being overlooked for Michael Owen as captain, I can see how that would piss him off.
