Vardy nearly quit last year

Yeah but we are not Vardy's 'co-workers'. Pearson can rip him a new one if he wants...

The fact that you pay money to watch a football match doesn't entitle you to insult and abuse other people - regardless of how well they are paid.

if you go to a posh restaurant and your waiter gets your order wrong, do you scream "You useless ****er get back to serving burgers at McDonalds. I pay your wages". Do you then boo them every time you see them walk past your table?

No. Of course you don't... because you'd look like a total failure of a human being. BUT this is exactly what some people do at football matches. What’s the difference?

I might write a diabolical review on urbanspoon or trip advisor though. Are the owners/waiters right to get upset because someone has voiced their opinion on a review website? I'd seldom abuse a footballer at a game or directly to them via twitter unless they completely deserved it such as Joey Barton. I will speak my mind on here though, which is the right avenue to take. Players aren't above criticism.

Just seen a snippet of an interview with the beautiful Natalie Jackson, in which Vardy says he was ready to quit last year. This was down to the pressure put on him by fans on social media sites and elsewhere, the reason he didn't was down to our manager/back room staff saying they believed in him. So all of you who gave him shit last year hang your head in shame, and to NP and staff, well done on helping a young lad deal with the pressure of stepping up from non league

Edit: I think the interview is on late kick off tonight

quote So all of you who gave him shit last year hang your head in shame,. why should they even the most loyal and oldest fans have the right to give him shit as he was shit last season. I bet vardy is not complaing know has he has god status . has someone else has said don't go on social media if you don't like what you hear. I for one remember mark venus a left back in the 80s who got slagged off every game then scored one of the best goals I have seen at filbert street. but got sold about a month later and that was without social media.

I'm really pleased he's doing well this season, there was a lot of doubters when he joined and did have a slow start even i have to admit i was a bit unsure but i did feel he needed time to settle in. He's a nice lad with a bit of talent that will get an England call up very soon!

completely agree the vardy haters must be really proud of themselves come to think of it where would we be if the Pearson and Drinkwater haters had won. Just goes to show how little some of our so called fans really know about the game.

I've not really criticized vardy but I have other players. How do we know that the abuse hasn't actually helped him?

I suppose criticism and in some cases abuse can serve to make a person stronger, regardless of whether it's constructive and regardless of whether it's deserved. I tend to think that applies more when a person is lacking in effort, in that they go the extra yard to prove people wrong. I mean, what we appear to be saying here is that Drinkwater and Vardy took some stick for a poor run of form, then responded by proving everyone wrong. So there's not a great deal of evidence that it's been counter-productive in their cases, at least.

I've often referred back to McGhee asking for more noise from the crowd, saying that even negative noise is more helpful than silence. On a personal note, I like to keep it constructive - of the 'pull your finger out' variety at worst. But I still think people have the right, so long as it doesn't spill over into outright hatred.

This reminds me of back in the MON's first season with us too how did that turn out and he still remembers it now

Yes. He responded to that abuse by leading us to the most successful four years in our history, and arguably his career. He referred to that day in March 1996 so often that you've got to wonder whether it did a lot to drive him on. Either way - and I'd like to add that I was appalled, back then, by the stick a relatively new manager got in that Sheffield United game - there's still very little to suggest that the abuse did him, or us, any harm.

It just suggested that a lot of our fans know nothing about football!

Not condoning this or anything but maybe this subconsciously spurred him on to prove the doubters wrong and become the player he is today?

Just saying...

its funny reading this because a lot of you are acting like Saints having never spoken a bad word against one of our players.. Vardy last year was crap and maybe the fans giving him a bit of stick on social media and putting pressure on him made him into what he is today as it certainly hasn't done him any harm. He wanted to prove his haters wrong and he has.

He didn't say anything about why he was considering giving up last year did he?

tbf Natalie Jackson forced that down his throat by pretty much telling him that he was ready to give up, what a shite interviewer

Flair has it right, abuse (via social media / during games) is toeing the line but criticism or fair comment on a board / forum isn't.

I despise booboys but people could've written fair and balanced criticisms of Vardy last season that seem to have been tarred with the same brush used for the denser, less eloquent posts relating to his form last year. Lots of people seem to have clambered on to a high horse regarding his complete u-turn in form and whilst I wasn't one of the set that permanently wanted rid; those trying to "one-up" those that did perhaps jump the gun a little are as embarrassing as the posts they're waffling on about.

"certainly hasn't done harm"? Certainly? What, like almost quitting? The reason he's been a success this season is because of the encouragement of the management team. Don't try and take credit for this, it's pretty clear that the abuse he got held him back not spurred him on.

Disagree.

It's tough out there under the social media spotlight, however the fans only had his match-day performances to judge him on.

They did not have the luxury of seeing him train or notice significant potential or note that a period of transition that required extra time or learning would make a significant difference to his performances.

Really pleased for him but he looked League 1 at best last year and people commented on this in public discussion.

Fair play to the LCFC management for doing their job so well and to Vardy for finding confidence and coming through to form and developing.

As for the fans that should 'hang their heads in shame'? Meh.

(I'm not talking about condoning abuse here)

i agree 'hang their heads in shame' is very OTT. If i was abused on twitter for being shit and people doubted me i wouldn't give up.. i would work hard to prove them wrong. And that is what he has done.

For all we know if nobody gave a shit about how well he played last year he might of been the same drought striker this year, maybe the kick up the backside from our fans is what he needed.

Harry, on what basis can you prove that it is because of the back room staff.... not that the reason he has become the player today was from some fans giving him stick last year which is maybe what he needed. People weren't giving him death threats ffs.

If it wasn't for the social media pressure he probably wouldn't have had the drive he needed from the back room staff in the first place... ]

what do you mean 'don't try and take credit' i wasn't one to give him abuse over twitter if that's what you are getting at

I can't prove it but it all seems a lot more believable to me. I think this 'kick up the backside' idea is wrong because he was already working hard.

If had been slacking off I'd be inclined to believe you - a player may well work harder to prove people wrong but this wasn't an effort issue, it was a confidence issue. What he needed was to believe in himself as he did at the start of last season. Encouragement is a lot more likely to make this happen in my experience.

Foxestalk made him the player he is today, what a statement. We don't know how ****in good we are on here, we even have the ability to turn an also ran into a 'future England striker!' If you believe half the shite posted on here

Danny Drinkwater and Jamie Vardy both came in for unfair criticism last season

Genuinely thought Drinkwater was one of our better players last season anyway and was just a bit inconsistent especially towards the end of the season. Jamie Vardy in his own right was very promising also to start with last season but faded a bit towards the end of the season

Never personally gave either player any stick and neither should anybody else have done

Moral of this story is give people a chance

Forget last season, some of the reactions when they were named in the starting line up in our first game of the season against Boro were absolutely laughable:

Is it unreasonable for someone to be able to use social media without receiving abuse? When did people lose the ability to control themselves?

The exact same thing would happen if a famous persons mobile phone number was published in the public domain or their postal address. They would receive all manner of stuff. People are weird.

This. It's the usual headline grabbing nonsense from the media.

What footballer actually "quits" the game on the back of one season? The reality is Vardy probably thought about a loan at a league one club to get his confidence up when he wasn't making the starting line up, and NP persuaded him he was good enough for the Championship.

But hey the reality doesn't grab the headlines so they stick some words in the kid's mouth and hope people tune in to their second rate TV show on the back of it.

There's a big difference between 'criticism' and 'abuse'... I'm not talking about criticism... Everybody's allowed to say stuff like "I think Vardy misses too many chances".

What 'abuse' do you give a player at a game or on Twitter? Can you give an example? Also, when do you decide that they have "completely deserved it".?

I've given Joey Barton my two penneth when he get's all self righteous. The only Leicester player i've ever given any stick to on twitter was Paul Gallagher after his completely inept display away at Chelsea where he fannied out of several challenges and was then spouting off on twitter himself. He deserved it.

Not sure there was any mention of quitting the game, just the club?
