Vardy nearly quit last year

Nice workplace. Got any jobs??

haha. nah there's not at the moment sorry we're all staffed out.

Unfortunately footballers are celebrities - they are paid like them and are given the adulation - the downside to being a footballer and not an actor is that when you play poorly it's very visible and can't be cut out and re-filmed.

I'd do either given the opportunity and still enjoy it more than the rat race that the rest of us have to run in ..... Abuse isn't right, but criticism of a poor performance is. As a footballer you just have to realise that the idiot abusing you is probably thick and can't express criticism without insults, and would rather be you than themselves.

Posted

Personally I've never seen the point in being a supporter if you aint going to support the players abuse is what you give the opposing players to put them off it just seems stupid to me to do it to your own.

I agree. I'd never go out of my way to directly abuse a player who played for my team on twitter etc. However, I have every right to give my personal opinion of the player and the team on forums such as this. If players go out of their way to read up on themselves on the internet then it's their own fault. It's no different than a so called footballing pundit giving his opinion in the paper or on tv, if the player chooses to find out every single thing that is said about them then they're in for one miserable existence.

I've no time for personal abuse, but constructive discussions about your team and players on the internet or in the boozer with your mates is absolutely fine. We're entitled to our opinions.

The second part of last season? Do you mean the 8 minutes at Middlesbrough? (I know he gave away a penalty)

Or the 10 minutes at Cardiff?

Or the 15 minutes at Wolves? 8 minutes at Blackburn? 12 minutes at Blackpool?

Or do you mean the one league game he started in the second half of the season those 70 minutes against Peterborough it was a shocking defeat, but you can't really blame Vardy as he had been subbed when we were 1-0 up. Maybe it was the Huddersfield games you are referring to, when NP went all experimental and also tried to play Wellens and Gallagher and Futacs.

In our relegation form run of last season he played 12 whole minutes, there were many more unacceptable performances.

Maybe you are referring the run of games he got before Christmas, when first Nugent got injured and Vardy had to be rushed back from injury and illness, then Waghorn got injured just as Nugent regained fitness. His performances then weren't as good as his performances at the start of the season, but we had nobody else (well Lingard and Futacs) until we signed Wood, which goes to my second point about understanding why a player isn't at his best.

I'm not saying he is above criticism, but it is nonsense like this that makes it seem like persecution of a player, people are so blinded by the preconception they have of players that they convince themselves of things that aren't true.

Yeah all of the above, in every single last one of those performances were inept, along with both games against Huddersfield in the FA cup where was totally inept. I'm not saying it was his fault we lost, or that others weren't bad, he was however indisputably bad, he showed no signs of being ready to play first team football, shouldn't of been in our side and would of have been better off elsewhere until July.

"Rushed back from Illness and injury" lol I forget how good you are at making excuses for players lol. Injury illness or whatever he was still terrible. And you are pretty much saying he is above criticism by the way.

Can't remember which match it was but during our bad run last season Vardy had come on as a late substitute. A family sat in front of me, big fat dog of a mother yelled "Vardy you twat" as he put a ball out for a throw in. Few minutes later, Kasper was lining up a goal kick and this 8 year old kid shouted "Don't pass it to Vardy he's shit" - couldn't believe it. I fücking hate this type.

A couple of lads near me last season used to give Marshall some horrific abuse. Calling him a c*nt, w*nker and some vile personal abuse. One of the guys veins were popping out his head as as he screamed at the top of his voice. I asked him one game if Marshall had shagged his mrs. Criticising someone's performance is fair enough though I don't agree with booing players who are trying, but some of the personal insults shouted are out of order. Unless of course, they have shagged your wife.

"Ready to quit" what?

I’m sure Vardy was peed off about the reaction of the fans. But the way he’s roared back into form this season suggests that he’s not the sort of character who would be crying in his sleep because of a few nob-ends on Twitter.

He’s got his head down, put up with the abuse, and has proved a few idiots wrong.

A non-story.

In my opinion the whole place was toxic last season, the fans were at boiling point after a couple of seasons of expectation and nothing to show for it. We were partly to blame for that and I think as a group we're an embarrassment at times, very fickle and slightly deluded. That said, there's enough evidence to provide as to why our fans were behaving how they were last season and sadly players will come in for stick if they don't perform. My argument with Vardy would be that the baptism of fire he's received has in the end bought the best out of him. I don't advocate it but it's clear that the talent he has was not being used hence why he dropped out of the football league. It's often a mental thing why some players don't make it, it's hard to believe that a player with Vardy's ability could be plying his trade about 7 tiers below the PL at one point with the technical skill he's got but he was doing. His attitude was questionable in his late teens/early twenties by all accounts and it's a credit to him and his coaches that he's gone on to make it at this level and is destined to perform in the Premier League next season. He's overcome some personal battles and is now realising that explosive ability, he has the confidence and belief now. He came in for dogs abuse at times and that was wrong but it's helped make him and I hope we have all learnt lessons from that. I'm a bit embarrassed at how scathing I was of him and the lads last year but fans aren't perfect and football is our outlet in life. Our frustrations come out and thankfully the people who bare the brunt of it, the players and coaching staff get paid VERY, VERY well for their troubles.

If players can't handle the criticism rightly or wrongly then they need to make sure they shield themselves from it as much as possible and being very active on twitter isn't the best way of going about it. You'll get helmets on there giving people stick even when they're absolutely flying so what do they expect if them and the team are struggling?

I'm glad he didn't quit because we're on the verge of something amazing and he'll no longer have to play in front of about 3000 fans on dog muck pitches.

What does money have to do with anything?? Just because you are paid well its doesn't mean abuse/criticism hurts any less.

Felt really sorry for him when one of our "fans" gave him dogs abuse as he left the pitch after Peterborough away.

Ok, so he didn't have a great game that day but why do fans think that by being cnuts to the players will make them play better.

I'm guessing they realise that it won't but just gives them a rush in their otherwise dull lives.

It probably does.

What do people actually gain from abusing one of your own players anyway?? There are literally no good outcomes from it, it doesn't improve the player, it doesn't help the team so why do it?

It makes them less angry. It's like swearing when you've stubbed your toe.

It's an attempt to put pressure on the manager to use the player in question less.

Although you are right it's not something fans should be doing to their own players, unfortunately when some people attend football matches and things don't go their way they have a tendency to over react and take it out on one/a small number of players sometimes

Not an excuse a fact, see my second point, after a good start Vardy missed 3 games through injury and illness, Nugent got injured, Vardy started 3 games in 8 days and was substituted in all 3 because he wasn't good enough/fit enough. Then Waghorn got injured the game Nugent came back.

Now whether it was a mental thing or a physical thing I don't know, but Vardy didn't look the same player we saw at the start of the season, but he didn't look "unacceptable" he then had another spell out injured, his comeback consisted of a handful of 10 minute spells you've deemed "unacceptable", the first of which was the Middlesbrough penalty incident, which was a case of trying to hard to make an impression on his comeback, the rest I doubt registered, but your preconception at the time was Vardy is shit, so you would have picked up anything negative, hence my first point, look for the positives.

Going back to my third point whether or not he was playing his best, you have to trust Nigel is picking the best team, he sees the players every day, the other options we had at that time were Futacs and Lingard. People were calling for Futacs to start, but when he did he looked poor, and Lingard was just too lightweight whenever he came on. Nige opted for Vardy over them because he knew what he could do.

I am not saying he played well in those games, but I'm also not going to judge a player in his first season in the league based on a handful of sub appearances, a couple of cup games in an experimental side and one start at Peterborough, and ignore the good start he made to the season when he looked threatening.

Booing players on to the pitch is the most moronic thing our supporters do. It's pathetic "support". I'd love a player to be booed on, score a winner and refuse to celebrate/ shush gesture/ give a V-sign to the fans.

danny cupped his ear to the fans when a lot of them were on his back didn't he?

Ahhh so fans reckon they know more about football than the staff who have been working in football all their lives and are professionals who work with the players every day. I see now. After sitting with some fans, it's quite embarrassing to see their levels of football knowledge

Ian Holloway has worked in football all his life and is a professional who works with his players every day. I rest my case.

He was bleating about quitting.

Given a choice between earning the national average (which he'd probably struggle to reach as I doubt he has any work expreience) or the salary he was receiving from us I certainly wouldn't be thinking of quitting football.

Surely the club coach them in how to deal with social media bullies?

There are a lot of things I don't like about Ian Holloway yet he achieved promotion last year to the premier league. You've got to know a bit about football to do that.

So people who earn good money are not the same human beings with the same emotions as the rest of us Hackers? I know you're a staunch leftie but still...

I didn't say he should be judged I'm pretty sure I said some of the criticism was justified (which it was) I'm not saying he should be booed or berated from the sidelines or slagged off on Twitter.

No it's an excuse and to say he had a "good start" is very much a matter of opinion as well, he looked raw full of energy but seemed to not have the ability to act or think quickly enough to score a lot of goals at this level.

Chris Wood is a good example of being injured in/out of the side/flying off to the four corners of the earth the All Whites and missing games this season and still working his bollocks off when he come on/ when he starts and playing well and occasionally scoring or setting up a goal, Vardys contribution can be described as adequate at best up until October, after which he provided nothing but disappointment despite numerous chances off the bench and in the starting XI, and as I say, some of his contributions i.e at Huddersfield, Peteborough and at home to Middlesborough ( there you go again with the excuses "trying to make an impression" lol It might only be 8 minutes but when all you do is give the ball away and give away a crucial penalty that was thankfully missed that's still unacceptable to me, if they'd of scored that we'd of not made the play offs) were nowhere the level of what is required by a striker at this level.

Ahhh so fans reckon they know more about football than the staff who have been working in football all their lives and are professionals who work with the players every day. I see now. After sitting with some fans, it's quite embarrassing to see their levels of football knowledge

Some of them yes, quite considerably more as well.

He didn't do a good job at Crystal Palace really. Their promotion had a lot more to do with the brilliant start under Dougie Freedman than anything Ian Holloway did.
