Danno Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 give him a cross to attack he'll be great he's not a target man so stop asking him to do something he cannot do, play it to feet or chest not 3 feet over his headHe has the first touch of a baby elephant so i'm not sure we should do that.
Dan Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 give him a cross to attack he'll be great he's not a target man so stop asking him to do something he cannot do, play it to feet or chest not 3 feet over his head But why can he not do it? He's got the strength and the height.
Dickov22 Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Yeovil defended excellently for a lot of the game. They completely stopped us playing all over the park. We were always going to end up going long. We aren't Barcelona. As much as I'd want us to, we cannot glue the ball to the floor. You're making excuses for something that doesn't deserve excusing. There is absolutely no reason someone of his height and strength should be so inept in the air. He even failed to win one header when he was unmarked. Wood is far too limited to be effective in our side. Tell you who he reminds me of - Yakubu. Both are goal poachers - but that shouldn't stop him being unable to jump. Vardy isn't bad but you wouldn't say he's great. Steve Howard was the last forward we had who was good in the air. I think Vardy is excellent in the air for his size. Wood should be as good as Howard was in the air. But for some reason, he's crap. I agree with your earlier point about that header he messed up when totally unmarked. He completely ran under the ball and mistimed it. Strange! It does seem to be a thing with strikers these days- Waghorn can't jump, neither could Beckford, neither can Wood. I just don't get it. As a striker it's a fundamental part of your game- sometimes the ball comes to you in the air.

It might've been a genuine error but his success rate in the air makes me think otherwise. Vardy is good in the air for his size but he's in no way dominant or target man-like.
lcfcsnow Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Here lies the problem,we cannot cater for both Knockaert and Mahrez in the same starting 11,our midfield has struggled since they have both played..need to bring Dyer back. Thats the solution is it? Bring Dyer back? Is that what we're going to do in the Prem when more talented players are needed to open up defences lose the ball a few more times because they tried to make something happen? I agree that Mahrez had a nightmare first half, but should we go up we need those kind of players to make things happen. Dyer is not going to be the answer. I like our 4-2-3-1 setup at the moment, with Drinkwater and James holding, Knockaert and Mahrez roaming on the left/right and Nugent is the link between the attack and midfield. That link needs to be looked at if we go up though, and thats why Wood isn't a replacement for Nugent. He is a centre forward, Nuge is currently playing Attacking midfield and it clearly isn't benefitting his performances lately. I wouldn't mind seeing Nugent up front for a few games in place of Vardy, who's performances have dropped. Last night was a half-arsed performance by both though.

Looked fine before the last two. Having Mahrez in the team doesn't suddenly make Drinkwater incapable of passing to a team mate.

Dan Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Mahrez doesn't deserve dropping. He's been our best player recently. He wasn't even that bad last night.
Babylon Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Mahrez doesn't deserve dropping. He's been our best player recently. He wasn't even that bad last night. He was awful first half, really really bad. I felt sorry for him and Drinkwater as they constantly gave the ball away and miss hit it.

Charl91 Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 People don't seem to understand that sometimes players have a bad game - there doesn't have to be an underlying reason for everything
Dickov22 Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 People don't seem to understand that sometimes players have a bad game - there doesn't have to be an underlying reason for everything Exactly.
Dan Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 He was awful first half, really really bad. I felt sorry for him and Drinkwater as they constantly gave the ball away and miss hit it. He made mistakes but he got better and he was carrying the ball forward for us at real pace in the second half. He wasn't great but wasn't all that bad. Drinkwater on the other hand was awful. Nothing was coming off for him.
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 No player is or should be beyond being dropped. That said, given Wood, Phillips and GTF as replacements, I feel our best replacement attacker is on loan at Wigan. I don't and never really have rated Wood. Therefore, I'd stick with the status quo. I expect Nige to sort out his striking options as a priority in the summer.
Vardinhio Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Nugent to start and if not performing we have decent options from the bench. Nuge is a big game player and I expect him to deliver again.
TheUltimateWinner Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Not bad for the 5th best player in the league, eh?
suffolk fox Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 The only header wood won all evening was the goal. So on that basis I will let him off what until that moment was an awful display. For a bloke who is at least six foot plus he looked as though he was playing with concrete boots. Never seen a player who wins absolutely nothing in the air? He doesn't even jump? Makes Steve Howard look like Pele.
Grewks Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Wood. We only have to look at his performance against fulham to see just how well he can play, he single handedly tore their back 4 apart that night, not one of them could handle his hold up-play and strength. But when he doesn't jump or look committed he is such a poor player. I don't think he is your 'big time charlie' type like Beckford for example, i just don't get what it is. He jumped 2 times last night, the first he flicked it on to drinky for the cross to kasper, and the second when he literally barged their two center backs out the way to knock it over the line. He is still young, so suggesting he 'isn't good enough' is wrong, he just needs to show us fans more of that desire which has led to him scoring goals, and others scoring them as well. He played a big part in the goal last night.
DanTheFox07 Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Hopefully a case of proving his fitness to pearson and then he will get more game time, hopefully will prove to be an asset in the premiership?
StanSP Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Pretty sure Vardy is still better than him. Vardy puts himself about in a slightly different way but he's been our best forward this season by some distance.

As a striker it's a fundamental part of your game- sometimes the ball comes to you in the air. Height has nothing to do with Aerial ability. Van persie, who is only 3cm shorter than wood, doesn't win headers that are hoofed from 50 yards away. The problem for me is not that Wood is poor in the air, it is that the players and staff can surely see that yet we still hoof it towards him. His best performance this season came against fulham where we smashed (instead of floating) it into his chest and feet, he was unplayable that night.
BenKimberlin Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Which player probably has the best attempts to goal ratio KASPER SCHMIECHEL
Grewks Posted 26 March 2014 Posted 26 March 2014 Pretty sure Vardy is still better than him. Vardy puts himself about in a slightly different way but he's been our best forward this season by some distance. He is quicker, but his finishing is poor. That isn't just based off the last 2 games, but as a whole over the past 2 years.
