Dan Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 Can't believe that people are using Howard as a positive example of how Wood should play, he was a bloody awful player. Wood is 10 times the player Howard ever was!!! But he isn't. Howard is seriously under-rated by some here.
Harry - LCFC Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 Because with him in the side, we create less chances to actually score in the first place. I'd rather have two quick forwards who stretch the play than the big man/small man combination personally. Wood can finish and he does get the odd goal, I will never dispute that, but we are so much less threatening with him in the side and I cannot believe some don't see that. I don't want it to appear like I've got some agenda because I'd love him to prove me wrong, but I'm not expecting it. I'm not arguing that Wood starts, Vardy and Nugent are our best front two. I'm arguing that he isn't a poor player. Leave it to the coaching team to iron out the faults in his game because I think we've got a good goalscoring striker here - something you shouldn't throw on the scrap heap too readily.
Gubbins Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 But he isn't. Howard is seriously under-rated by some here. Disagree completely, if anything he is massively overrated simply because he scored that late goal against Leeds (one of very very few headed goals he scored for us). Wood may be crap when the ball is hoofed up to him but equally so was Howard who would usually give away a free kick or when he did win it, knock it on to no one in particular. Wood is a vastly better player than Howard with the ball on the ground and a vastly better finisher. I have no clue why people would want Wood to be anything like that lump!
Agent Fox Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 Probably just me getting all sentimental but seeing Nugent ambling around on Tuesday looking knackered - isn't his daughter still relatively young? Maybe he's just not sleeping, you know, like a normal human who becomes a new dad? No, no, no, whyyyyyyyyy Lord? Why?
Mythyaar Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 For what it's worth, having been to the last two season's games at Turf Moor, Nugent was easily man of the match in both, and also scored in both (we won 3-1 and 1-0). It's not Ipswich, granted, but he likes it at Turf Moor! He has to play!
Benji Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 No, no, no, whyyyyyyyyy Lord? Why? Valid point, is it not? Do I have a life which means I haven't read every thread on foxestalk? Yes.

I've not thrown him on the scrapheap at all. I know he's young, and does know where the net is - so if he's going to be persisted with then I hope it's whilst work is done to improve his all-round game. Howard could actually bring the ball down and pass it. He gave away a hell of a lot of fouls (although he was stupidly unlucky with refs if I remember rightly) but he wasn't given the praise by a lot that he deserved. He was an effective target man. Not a big goalscorer, but played his role well. I'm not for one second clouded by his goal against Leeds.

He didn't get decisions go his way because he whined to refs about every decision he didn't get, used to get on my nerves just watching him.

He didn't get decisions go his way because he whined to refs about every decision he didn't get, used to get on my nerves just watching him. That probably swayed things but doesn't change the amount of times he had a free-kick given against him when he'd done nothing wrong.
Guest Col city fan Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 I personally saw Steve Howard as a far more effective foil than Chris Wood. The Howard/Fryatt partnership pretty much ripped up League 1 and remained effective in Pearson's first season in the Championship. It begs the question of what type of Striker Chris Wood is? Do you play him as the man up top, or just behind another striker? I don't rate him much in the air and he's not quick. What he does have is a good finish on him. Very good, in fact, for a big fella. With Big Steve you knew what you were getting, you knew how to play him... what his strengths were, what his weaknesses were. With Wood I still don't know how to best play him.
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 I love Wood I think he's QUALITY, you watch when he gets his run in the team I think ya'll be creaming yaself
The Doctor Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 We will at Burnley I think Vardy is more than decent in the air But he should do more in the air. That's my point. We're not Barcelona- sometimes the ball is in the air funnily enough. There's a difference between a long aimless lump and a good aerial pass. Play a decent long ball to him, fine, he's shown before he's more than capable of getting those and making it work, just aimless lump up to him - well that's not going to work, you can't feed a player scraps and look for him to be good. Wood is a very good finisher - look at his record: 20 goals last season says a lot (I expect people will say that it doesn't count because some were for Millwall or some such irrational nonsense) but he is a finisher, not a target man. I suppose the best way to put it is, despite his height he's more of a Dickov than a Deane, he gets on the end of things and puts them in the net, not win headers and act as foil for the main goalscorer.

muzzy1981 Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 Why doesn't Wood jump ? Have you not seen the film kiwis can't jump? Not sure wood is the answer in the prem yet. Think we need to spend £5-£10m on a top striker Why doesn't Wood jump ? Have you not seen the film kiwis can't jump? Not sure wood is the answer in the prem yet. MattGamble92 Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 Wood is our striker with the most potential. But for a big man he wins no where near as much in he air as he should
lc_tillidie Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 Im getting worried. Does anybody think that the pressure is getting to the lads? The fluent passing game has gone now its long balls hoofed up the park. Confidence has gone, Ive noticed a dip over last 3 games. The last time we played like champions was at Barnsley
GingerrrFox Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 A 22 year old striker who scored 20 goals last season gets written off as shit. Only on Foxestalk. He's played 12 times this season and scored 5 hardly given a proper chance due to the excellent form of Vardy and (sometimes) Nugent.
Dickov22 Posted 27 March 2014 Posted 27 March 2014 I really view Nugent as the kind of player who goes through these little spells where he looks pretty lethargic and average, to a goal scoring streak where he looks very decent. He will come good again. Probably Saturday

The fluent passing game has gone now its long balls hoofed up the park. Confidence has gone, Ive noticed a dip over last 3 games. The last time we played like champions was at Barnsley Blackpool and Blackburn were solid enough performances. We've got a tough run coming up now on the back of a shabby home performance against Yeovil. I think it's just a blip. I would be typical Leicester if we draw at home to Yeovil and go and win at Burnley. I don't think confidence will be an issue till the end of the season.

He will come good again. Probably Saturday Nugent vs. Burnley. Hmmm you may be right! Several times this season he has come to the brink of consistently very average performances meaning he could be dropped and then he has a good little run of form and a goal scoring spurt. No doubt he'll do it again before the season is up.
Dickov22 Posted 28 March 2014 Posted 28 March 2014 It's funny how criticism just isn't allowed on here. I've stated I like Wood, he has so much potential, he is certainly a finisher. However, he's dreadful in the air. That's not to say I advocate us lumping balls at him from all angles and expect him to make something of them. I'm just saying, he doesn't even jump to challenge most of the time. It's weird and he definitely needs to improve
cjones Posted 29 March 2014 Posted 29 March 2014 i feel theres a touch of slight worry after a draw vs a team near the bottom, get used to it there will be a lot of ups and downs over the next month or so, its probably easier playing midtable sides with little to play for, all these so called lower teams will be battling like hell for points and will take points off a lot of teams pushing for promotion, pretty much par for the course to be honest, keep your heads and keep believing YOU WILL GO UP as for resting nugent etc cant see the point now unles hes totally knackered stick with whats got you to the top of the league, but if you need to rest a few GTF and phillips have been here before and have a lot of experience in this position and maybe theis could prove important to you for the final push. both could pop up and score an important goal in a pressure situation, both will be useful now, not sure if GTF will figure really its a shame hes got the option for another year because im sure he would feature more near the end, couldnt believe he wasnt even on bench v yeovil he would of been the type of player to open them up a little more , but that would of been another apperance off his option. so i doubt you will be seeing him much now.
GingerrrFox Posted 29 March 2014 Posted 29 March 2014 Wood's proper shit though isn't he. Oh hang on.
Dickov22 Posted 29 March 2014 Posted 29 March 2014 Wood's proper shit though isn't he. Oh hang on. No one said he was?
dmayne7 Posted 29 March 2014 Posted 29 March 2014 No one said he was? Seem to have a good game today though? Won everything, showed great strength and link up play, and scored a wicked goal. As I said, its in these areas of his game where he's better than Vardy. So I guess you could say that today helped to perfectly summarise where I got the idea that he has more to his game than Vardy. Still, really hoping Vards isn't out for too long.
