Time for Wood to step in for Nugent?

Been Following these forums for a long time but only recently became a member, Ive noticed Chris wood get some stick for being out of form etc.

I think maybe Chris wood should start for Nugent, its been a good few games now since David has last scored, i would check to be exact but i think its been 4.

Chris wood will be lucky to get 20 mins a game and davids had over 300 mins and not scored chris has scored some belters for New Zealand and i think given 90 mins he would score.

I think Yeovill will be a perfect time for it.

Nope.  Absolutely no point in changing a winning side.  People just look at Nugent and go "Well, he scores penalties and hes bagged a few elsewhere" but they don't even factor into the equation all the other stuff he does.  It astounds me sometimes.

Nugent and Vardys partnership is crucial.  Yes, Nugent might not get as many goals as he perhaps should and may go missing in games sometimes, but what he does is allow Vardy to play the game the way he is good at (and also, doing an excellent good job of it at present.)  Wood is a totally different player and it would upset the balance for me going forward.  Aside from his 17 goals, hes also got a hat full of assists, most of them for Vardy I'd imagine.

I agree. I'm not a Nugent fan. His 'link-up' play with Vardy is exaggerated at times, Vardy would still be having the season he's having if Nugent wasn't in the team. GTF when he comes on has proved what a proper link-up man should do.

Wood, if played into form would easily be a 20 goal season player. Maybe we shouldn't change a winning team but if we are to do it, Yeovil would be a good time to do it.

And what has Wood done to deserve a start?

Strange question really. What can any player do if he never gets on the pitch?

It has more to do with whether or not any players do not merit retaining their place in the starting line up.

I agree with you both but i think Chris wood get so much stick, its unreal.

Also Vardy is on 9 yellows 1 more hes suspended for 3 games, if he gets a yellow against Yeovil or Burnley. He will miss the Wigan, Wednesday and Brighton game and for me they're far more important then yeovill.

Nugnet has a decent game then a laclustre one all the time, its very frustrating. I would start Wood over Vardy tomorrow though just so Vardy isnt suspended for Sat

I think this is an excellent point. Yes, Yeovil are fighting for their lives but id be comfortable playing them with our second team. Burnley is a massive game. I would rest Vardy, Big Wes, Drinky and maybe even knockaert. Squad rotation is so important.

Well I'm sure Nigel sees him in training and is in the position to make a better judgement than people on here. Wood does not pressure defenders and is never going to get the assists like Nugent does, so i'm not sure whether he should be playing really.

If I see one more nugent thread there will be blood.

Nugent does his supporting role brilliantly and it always goes unnoticed, the guy is pivotal in our build up play and linking the midfield and attack. Check the highlights from recent weeks and see how involved Nugent is with every goal.

oh ffs how many of these anti nugent threads are going to pop up this season.

Unless pearson is forced into a change or until the unbeaten run comes to an end lets keep the same team.

its also not the end of the world if vardy gets booked and suspended. our team is more than capable of dealing with his absense if it happens.

This.

I think it would help some people if they stopped thinking of Nugent as an out-and-out striker.

Much of his time is spent playing more as an attacking midfielder... then running up to support Vardy when he needs it. It's due to Nugent's incredible work-rate that we essentially get to play a 4-5-2 formation!

I think Nugent is just entering the 'taken for granted' phase that most of our loyal players seem to have to endure: Dyer and King being the two most noticeable recipients of the kind of post that asks : "Why aren't they brilliant EVERY week?"

Chris Wood is a very different sort of player to Nugent. We'd need to modify our game if we went with two conventional strikers. 17 games unbeaten. Do we really need to start changing our game-plan??

Nuge and Wood are very different players. Nuge is a linking forward and wood is a striker.

I think Wood is a better player than Nugent. But why take out a player who has started everyone of our match unbeaten run? Don't fix something that isn't broken.

Much of our success has come from the relentless pressure Nugent and Vardy put on the opposition defence. This allows our midfield to push further forward. I don't think Chris Wood has the engine to play this role and it would mean amending our style of play. Therefore, until we stop creating loads of chances, then stick with what works.

Every game is an important game until we are promoted. Until that is the case we should not rest any of our best players. I can't really see Pearson changing any of the starting lineup until promotion is secured. I doubt Nigel will lose too much sleep over not finishing top if we get promoted.

Wood and Nugent are very different players. I fear we would play hoof ball with a big target man up front.  Pearson sees Wood plenty on the training ground and he feels his best two are Nugent and Vardy, I'm not going to argue. We're not doing too bad. Long may that continue. If you ask me 83 points will do it. So beat Yeovil then party!

Im not a Nugent hater in any way but I've felt his performances have been dropping in quality for quite some time. Maybe it is time he gets a well earnt rest, as others have said we have quality on the bench why dont we use it and keep players fresh

Have people actually watched us this year, Nugent plays a withdrawn striker role, the only natural replacement we have is GTF. Wood is more a replacement for Vardy in respects that he leads the line like Vardy, albeit in a different manner.

I definitely think Wood should be given a start for Yeovil, really think he would be banging them in given the service the midfield are giving the strikers at the moment

The problem is Wood is our best finisher. I would say it's a close call between him and Super Kev but personally I think Wood just edges. However his all round game isn't quite there and for a big man he doesn't use his size well. Nugent for me hasn't been firing on all cylinders for a while and it would freshen him up to sit out the Yeovil game with Burnley on Saturday in mind. Saying that Wood wouldn't be suited to the deeper role Nugent has been playing so the only logical choice is GTF or Kev. I'd give GTF the start on Tuesday and bring Nugent back in fresh for Saturday.

I doubt Pearson will change the side that much for Yeovil.

If he did drop Nugent, I'd rather see KP come in over Wood.  His experience and intelligent off-the-ball movement would open up their defence massively.

I'd also like to see Dyer come back for the last 25mins to help kill them off.
