Legends recognition

Recommended Posts

I was talking to a couple of fans of other clubs last night and how their clubs recognise there legends with a statute/stand etc. It got me thinking, apart from a couple of suites we do not really have that many historical pieces in and around the stadium.

When you think we have a pretty good history and have had some fine players/managers I was wondering what fans would do to bring more meaning to the stadium. I understand with commercial marketing it's difficult to name a stadium nowadays however having something like 'upton steel steve Walsh stand' would not be too difficult.

Personally, I'd like to walshie a legend from my time growing up get more recognition at our club. Sky referred to him not long ago as a 'former leicester favourite'. Surely he's more than that.

What else:

Shilton

Banks

Worthington

Weller

Birch

Mccalister

Smith

Etc

Maybe even throw O'neil into the discussion.

One of the guys I was speaking to grew up in Leicester and had the daft suggestion of remaining the kop the "the saffron end" I'm sure he was joking.

Any thoughts?

Walshie should be given the Freedom of the City, if that hasn't happened already. Let him drive his flock of sheep down Gallowtree Gate every market day.

As for other suggestions, I wouldn't be averse to the idea of naming some public urinals after Holloway. They could be called the Ian Holloway Piss Pot, or something along those lines.

I wish we still had the images of the players around the stadium. Instead, that just got replaced with a basic 'King Power' banner. All commercial.

Anyway, I suppose it's how you define 'legend'. I mean, Steve Claridge is a legend to me as he scored a goal in a major cup final and a goal in a play off final. Two very important goals in the clubs history.

I would add Wallington, Lineker, Elliot and izzet to your list.

As for "Saffron Lane" end???

We could spray paint the turnstile numbers on like house numbers around the Kop. Have a few cars on bricks and a burning empty one for good measure. And everyone must wear a replica shirt at least five seasons out of date.

Arsenal decided to adopt a process of 'Arsenalisation' a couple of years after moving to the Emirates, which resulted in statues, murals etc added in and around the stadium. I'd love use to so a similar thing as our stadium is very generic and dull currently.

Arthur Rowley for sure.

I see you have a picture of Larry May.

I think the statues should be spread around the stadium, a frowning Claridge near a betting shop window, Lineker in the snack bar surrounded by Walkers crisp packets, Worthington half way between the bar and the ladies toilets, Michael Johnson at the burger van and Peter Taylor in the rubbish skip.

When I was walking away from the stadium I thought of an idea. Raw Dykes Road is probably the most popular route to the stadium, thousands walk up it every match day. The road is unfortunately surrounded by very grotty looking white railings.

I think it would be cool if they replaced these with blue walls (not brick ones) with pictures of ex and current City legends on them, to get a feel for the place when you walk up. Each section of the wall would have a different player on it, in a sort of 'walk of fame' style, and they would be fairly big, maybe slightly smaller than lifesize. It would probably cost less than a statue and would add some much needed history to the place.

The more I think about it, the more I realise that there is nothing about our history in the ground, unless you know where to look. People who aren't regulars should learn something from our club when they go to our ground, just by looking at it, whether that be inside or from the facade. They should be filled with a feeling of the legacy that Leicester City has left on football.

Gary Lineker...I love the bloke, but is he really considered a legend by us? I'm only 18 (shock horror) so I never saw him play for us and was too young to remember any of his playing career, but from what I've heard from relatives/family etc was that he spent more time on the floor playing for us. That's in terms of playing, I know how vital his input was when we were in money troubles and he probably is the reason why we still have a club to go and watch on Saturday afternoons, for that I personally will always be grateful.

No doubt he is one of the great names associated with our club but I think other teams (spurs, Everton) would owe a lot more to him than we do, going off my own research anyway. It feels to me like we try and cling on to his name and his legacy when actually there were players who did more for us.

I think Banks and Shilts deserve some recognition, and certainly Steve Walsh.

Legends for me would be people like Izzet, Elliot, Lennon, akinb....no I'm joking on that one.

If we were to build a statue outside the ground I'd have no idea who it should be of. At the minute I'd probably say O'Neil but I think it would be a fair few years before anything like that happened.

Question: Which former Leicester City player has a lifesize statue erected in his honour and where can it be seen?

Lineker is arguably the best player we've ever produced, he's Leiecester through and through - you even said we probably wouldn't have a club without him!

It's not so much what he did for us but who he is and what he went on to do - he's an England legend too, y'know with him being the only Englishman to have won the golden boot, Certainly one of our greatest ever legends, it's not even up for debate.

I think a stencil(eeeeuurrrgh graffiti) of Steve Walsh wheeling away in celebration against Derby would look good on the barren concrete of the dull plains of Freemens Wharf where the mindless people congregate at the football hole.

I'm guessing this was in reply to my post?

Fair enough everybody's entitled to their opinions, I certainly wasn't knocking his credentials, I just think there's players who have done more for us who would deserve recognition before Lineker. Don't get me wrong we'll arguably never produce another player like him again from our youth system, nor will any club.

Of course it's open to debate, that's what opinions form, debate! You can't call somebody else's opinion wrong. This forum wouldn't still be going if people didn't have opinions and then debate them!

That's a decent idea actually, but isn't that land owned by EON.

I'm going to be controversial here, but I don't see O'Neill's achievements worthy of a statue.

If we're going to have a statue it should be of Banks really. He won the bloody world cup whilst with us, that is a legendary achievement and it coincided with some of our best years.

As for Lineker, I'm pretty sure he is considered a legend, he's one of our all time best goal scorers, he won the golden boot, spent more years here than at any other club, and he's ours, he supports us. He didn't win anything with Everton and only spent a year there. Despite playing for them and Spurs I think most people remember him as our player.
