lestajigs Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Will be getting one or the other, say mileage, history, is the same, which do people think is better for a 1.6 petrol
lestajigs Posted 27 April 2014 Author Posted 27 April 2014 Whats your budget, whats your annual mileage? £2800 social around 5000
Fox92 Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Focus. Only because I'm a Ford type of person. Fancy a new car myself but not sure if I should wait until I've finished Uni and everything first.
DB11 Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Astra for comfort. Focus for more acceleration and responsiveness
Saxondale Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Whichever you prefer to be honest. The Focus is probably more of a quality product but they're both pretty good. I actually had an Astra 1.6 on a 57 plate from new and it was fine. Probably don't age as well as well the Fords though.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Beware juddering clutches on pre 2007 facelift Astras. I've got one and it's a common fault, so be careful when test driving, as symptoms sometimes only show up in cold, damp conditions. I paid to have clutch replaced but didn't cure it and probably should have had fly wheel done too. Vauxhall did eventually admit to problem and fixed cars under warranty, so if there's evidence this work was done you should be laughing. Apart from that, a solid car. More efficient, slightly more powerful engines from 2007. A lot of people prefer the focus but to me they don't feel quite as well put together and I'm not keen on the low driving position. Also, if you're tall (like me) the stupid wide centre console cuts into the space where your legs should be. Needless to say, the stereos in both are terrible
Legend_in_blue Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 At that age I'd go for the focus but certainly the new astra is better than the current focus.

filbertboy Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 just purchased a brand new astra - looked at the focus as well. thought the astra won hands down.
Legend_in_blue Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 just purchased a brand new astra - looked at the focus as well. thought the astra won hands down. The styling of the current focus, even on the st, is not as good as the astra. Also I don't like how the handbrake is positioned in front of the gear stick. You have to move way over to reach it. Poor design imo. The bootspace is also not as good.

I thought they were just there for decoration.
potter3 Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 I don't think there's a huge deal of difference, just test drive a couple of each and see which you prefer.
lestajigs Posted 27 April 2014 Author Posted 27 April 2014 Cheers guys, I'm even more undecided now lol
Bellend Sebastian Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Is the juddering clutch only the diesels and those cars with dual mass flywheels? I'm sure the 1.6 is only a single piece flywheel. It affected petrol and diesels I believe - mine is a 1.6 petrol. Not sure what sort of flywheel mine has to be honest; thought it was dual mass but don't quote me on that
ADK Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 My limited experience is that Fords are very reliable. Vauxhalls I know of people who've had problems. Although there's an elderly gentleman near me who regularly trundles to the shops in an immaculate F reg Cavalier.
cambridgefox Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 People use handbrakes? I thought they were just there for decoration. Do you use the button on the handbrake when using it?That noise when people don't uuurrghhh.I have a twatty button instead of a stick,I don't trust it and certainly don't trust the kids in the car ,whilst it's parked on a slope,in the fens.one slight touch and it's off ( no that wasn't the wife adding her bit)
AoWW Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Yeah, I do use the button - hate it when people pull the handbrake on without. Mainly I use my handbrake for hanging an assortment of hairbands on, though. I've long since got out of the habit of using it at junctions and such-like... in fact I think I've only ever done that on driving tests/assessments. I do use it to park, though.
stevelcfc Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 On handbrakes, Vauxhall handbrakes have a habit of, well, not working. Its a common known issue with the Corsa anyway, it simply doesn't hold on and hill, no matter how slight.
Legend_in_blue Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Don't buy a 55 plate VW golf under any circumstances! Although mine was a 56 plate and it cost me £2000 in repairs. At least if a ford or vauxhall goes wrong, it won't be too expensive to put right.
