Why so negative?

Recommended Posts

Many on here are already writing us off for next season and worried about who and when we bring in new players. Many then go back to the MON glory days and what quality we had but forget how we scrapped into the premiership under MON. So it got me thinking back to when we got promoted.

We had been well placed but the unrest of tubby clearing off to Wolves upset things. It is well documented and we sneaked into the play offs with a last day winner that relegated some tinpot club down south( perhaps thats why they are still so bitter). Stoke should have won at Filbo and we put in a professional performance to get a 1 nil at their place. We deserved to beat Palace but it needed that very late goal to avoid a penalty shoot out,  we didn't get into the premiership until the end of May. Our squad was:

1 Goalie considered to small and one who to tall who couldnt catch a cold. 2 full backs who were squad players from Leeds a centre half/centre forward with a hot head and dodgy knees, a guy we had got from Sheff Weds reserves. Our best defender and the one who we knew was premier class had a long term injury A midfield of an ex Forest/Villa player who some sort overweight and slow a lad who ran around alot who we picked up from Reading a youngster we had picked up from Chelsea youth who up to a few months earleir nobody had heard of and a ginger lad we had picked up from the mighty Crewe who got sent off/scored an OG on debut? Up front we had a 17 year old kid and a journey man from Birmingham, We had a couple of young lads in reserve Oakes,Campbell,Wilson and an ex con with a funny haircut. We were red hot favourites for relegation.

So what did we do to boost the squad how many players did we need? Our big transfer target was a £3 million defender who decided Wimbledon was a better bet than us and we wet into the new season with a Yank Goalie from Millwall and a centre half from Southend and after a couple of weeks we picked up a big scouser with dodgy hair and sideburns who ran like the honey monster.

Don't think i have to worry you about the difference then and now between the owners and the back room staff and the set up of the club as a whole.Turns out though this squad could actually play and didn't turn out so bad so stop worrying Nidel has a plan and so do the owners.

All these threads are too soon and smack of boredom. ie what can we write about?

Until we see what the squad is going to look like over the summer, there's no way we can tell how we might do next season. And we don't know what the opposing squads are going to look like either. The season is over. Go and do something else for a bit.. see what happens over the summer and then we'll all have more of an idea.

All true but there was nowhere near as much money around then so many teams had far weaker squads than today.

That's right, Col. How can we possibly even guess at this stage? We can't, and it will be a waiting game, until we finally know our squad, and as you rightly stated, how well the weaker sides bolster and improve their ranks.

It's just pie in the sky at this moment in time.
