Top 5 England World Cup Goals

Come on then you salads, let's have them.

1) David Platt vs Belgium 1990 - This was the first World Cup I watched live, I was 7 and hadn't shown much interest in football until Italia 90. I was obsessed after the first game of Argentina v Cameroon and this tournament still has a special place in my heart. Platt's injury time winner in extra time in the last 16 against a Belgium side who played us off the park at times was very special. The nonchalant ball in to the box from Gazza and the swivel and volley from Platt was sublime. Dreamland stuff.

2) Michael Owen vs Argentina 1998 -  Obvious choice, absolute wonder goal from the wonderkid. 18 years of age, he ran them ragged. I recently watched the full game of this back and it's got to be one of the best games of football i've seen England ever play. We destroyed them at times and it was cruel we were beaten that day. Owens goal was top drawer, their defenders just couldn't deal with him and it proved over the years they were still scared of him winning the penalty in '02 and he scored a few times against them in friendlies. At that particular time when Owen scored, I genuinely thought we were witnessing the world champions elect and the best player in the world of the future. I was only 15 mind you.

3) David Beckham vs Argentina 2002 - The penalty. When has a penalty featured high amongst a list of England goals given their nightmares with them? This one! Retribution after being sent off from Diego Simeone's tuck up this was the perfect tonic. I was 19 at the time and was absolutely steaming up The Litten Tree in Hinckley holding my breath as Beckham stepped up to rifle it down the middle and start proceedings on one of the best days of my life.

4) Joe Cole vs Sweden 2006 - Technique wise you can't better this, it was even on his weaker foot. What a hit and the celebrations that erupted was sensational. I got done over the head with a pitcher of snakebite but it was worth it. We should have put the Swedes to bed that day, we missed some absolute sitters.

5) David Beckham vs Ecuador 2006 - The whole boozer was giving the tv's and anyone that'd listen copious amounts of shit before Beckham stepped up and scored for us. We'd been diabolical all game and were lucky not to be losing, we dug in though and Dave scored a trademark free-kick. Another memorable night followed.

Admittedly having just typed all this out, there's not that many goals to choose from, perhaps I should have chosen Top 1 or 2 England goals hahahahahaa

I can't add much to that, those are the ones people remember as being special moments. I was 6 when Owen scored against Argentina and it's a great memory for me, even though I wasn't actually watching it.

The satisfaction of beating them 4 years later was really something.

Lineker against West Germany, brilliant touch and finish.

Cannot believe i've left this out, my hero as well! The reason I got in to football in the first place, i've a good mind to delete this bloody thread now. NORRIS!!!

Beckham's FK against Colombia in '98 had me throwing furniture about (I was seven and it seemed appropriate), but Owen's against Argentina in the same tourny is the one that sticks out the most from my lifetime.

Ah, and Gerrard against T&T in 06! But that was through pure relief more than anything, great hit though.

David Platt's goal was the best, its at number 1, the other 4 are in no particular order.

1) David Platt's swivel and volley vs Belgium at Italia 90. Best england goal in my lifetime in my opinion.

2) Michael Owens halfway line dribble and buried shot past Roa at France 98

3) David Beckahm's penalty vs Argentina at South Korea and Japan 02. Redemption, the celebration was PASSSHHHHUNNNNN

4) David Beckham's free kick vs Colombia at France 98. Wonderful technique, gave Mondragon absolutely no chance

5) Joe Cole's volley vs Sweden at Germany 06. Sublime volley.

1) beckham vs argentina 2002. i was on holiday in lanzarote and 8 years old and it was probably the happiest i'd ever been.

2) owen vs argentina 1998. just about remember that tournament and that is obviously the key memory. what a kid.

3) owen vs brazil 2002. genuinely for that goal and the 15 minutes after i was 99% sure we were going to win the world cup.

4) joe cole vs sweden 2006. best goal of the lot in terms of quality.

5) gerrard vs usa 2010. lovely move and finish after about 2 minutes of the world cup. all the pre tournament woes were forgotten for about half an hour.

There has been some great goals, I can only pick goals in my lifetime.

1. Joe Cole v Sweden, World Cup 2006 - absolute worldie, technique and everything was spot on.

2. Michael Owen v Argentina, World Cup 1998 - This was my first World Cup watching England after missing out on USA '94, saying that I was only three then, but this goal from Owen got me running the Riverside in Barrow like a right little nutter, I did a Ravenelli with my shirt and was telling every older bloke in there that he played for Liverpool. lol

3. Steven Gerrard v Trinidad, World Cup 2006 - Doesn't get a lot of mentioning because of the opposition (I think) and in the context, it was a goal who put us two up v Trinidad, kind of didn't mean a lot. But it was a great goal, cut in on his weaker foot and stuck it top corner.

4. David Beckham v Colombia, World Cup 1998 - Fantastic free-kick and put Beckham on the World scene in football, shame Argentina is what we remember his tournament for.

5. David Beckham v Argentina, World Cup 2002 - Nothing needs to be said, apart from one world. Passion!

One that hasn't been mentioned is Scholes against Tunisia in 98. Lovely strike.

Two that were almost great goals were the Scholes and Sheringham volleys against Argentina in 2002.

It narrowly missed out on mine, Beckham's penalty just edged it.

Lampard's goal that wasn't v Germany would of made it, the scenes that happened when we thought it went in were incredible.

I was behind the goal it ernt in. We knew it was in. With the ensuing celebrations it took about 2 minutes to realise it hadn't been given.

Contrast that with the far closer calls for Leicester this season - Phillips and Schmeichel (non-goal) where I was quite apprehensive because I wasn't in. From behind that goal I was certain that Lampard goal was in. Absolutely 100% certain.

An honourable mention to Sol Campbell's headed "goal" against Argentina in 1998, which was disallowed due to Alan Shearer elbowing the keeper in the throat. But it seems no one in the pub (or most of the England players) realised it was disallowed and Argentina went up the other end and nearly scored before we realised. I can still see Darren Anderton furiously cursing. Was about 10 minutes from time I think and could well have been the winner.

It was bad enough watching it on the box but I can imagine it being an absolute soul destroyer out there.
