davieG Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Nearly a third of people in Britain admit being racially prejudiced, research has suggested. The British Social Attitudes survey found the proportion had increased since the start of the century, returning to the level of 30 years ago. According to the survey, by social research company NatCen, 30% of those polled described themselves as either "very" or "a little" race prejudiced. Penny Young, chief executive of NatCen, said the findings were "troubling". The survey of more than 2,000 people revealed that prejudice had risen since an all-time low of 25% of people in 2001. It also found wide variations currently across the country: 16% of people in inner London admitted to prejudice but the figure was 35% in the West Midlands. Older men in manual jobs were the most likely to say they were prejudiced, but the group recording the biggest rise was educated male professionals. Levels of racial prejudice increased with age, at 25% for 17 to 34-year-olds compared with 36% for over-55s. Education had an impact with 19% of those with a degree and 38% of those with no qualifications reporting racial prejudice. 'National psyche' The social attitudes survey has been carried out every year since 1983. People were asked whether they would describe themselves as prejudiced "against people of other races". Ms Young told BBC Radio 4's Today programme self-reported prejudice was "very difficult" to study in detail. It appeared to be in "inexorable decline" in 2001 as part of "increasingly socially liberal Britain" - but has since gone back up. The effect of the 9/11 attacks and an increase in concern about immigration were two possible reasons for the turnaround, she said. The strongest message to politicians from the survey concerned immigration. More than 90% of those who admitted some level of racial prejudice wanted to see a reduction in the number of people entering the UK. But so did 73% of those who said they were not racially prejudiced. Ms Young added: "Levels of racial prejudice declined steadily throughout the 90s, but have been on the rise again during the first decade of this century. "This bucks the trend of a more socially liberal and tolerant Britain. Our local and national leaders need to understand and respond to increased levels of racial prejudice if we are to build strong local communities." Alison Park, co-director of the survey, said: "Racial prejudice, in whatever guise, is undoubtedly still part of the national psyche."
davieG Posted 28 May 2014 Author Posted 28 May 2014 .........and in other news 'Pakistani only' To Let sign removed Nelson 'Pakistani only' To Let sign removed The landlord took the sign down after accepting it was "inappropriate" Continue reading the main story Related StoriesLetting agents 'block black tenants' A 'To Let' sign advertising for a Pakistani family has been taken down after families complained to police. Residents contacted officers after spotting the sign in a window at a house in Nelson, Lancashire. The handwritten advert read 'For Rent, 3 Bedrooms, Just Pakistani Family' with an attached mobile number. Officers tracked down the landlord, who removed the sign after accepting it was "inappropriate". Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson also received complaints, and condemned the sign as "deeply offensive". He said: "This kind of thing has the potential to inflame tensions in the community. "My office was contacted by British people, as well as eastern European families, who were unhappy with the sign. "I also spoke to Asian families who couldn't believe what they had seen." 'Caused grief' About a dozen complaints were made to police and Mr Stephenson. Inspector Paul Goodall, of Lancashire Constabulary, confirmed the sign was investigated as a potential "racist incident", but no crime had been committed. "We managed to get around to the landlord's address and he accepted that it could have caused a stir, and the wording could cause offence," he said. "He said he had had some tenants who caused him grief, and just wanted a nice family. He accepted it was inappropriate. "He took the sign down and that was the end of the matter. It was dealt with fairly, and proportionately." The landlord was unavailable for comment.
Bryn Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Same proportion of people who voted in an election UKIP won.
Finnegan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 The honest third. Everyone's a little bit racist, sometimes.
dsr-burnley Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 The honest third. Everyone's a little bit racist, sometimes. Anyone who has ever said "The Germans have no sense of humour" is racist under the current definition. Maybe it's the definition that's changed, rather than the number of racists?
Nick Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 The honest third. Everyone's a little bit racist, sometimes. But, but.... I've got loads of Welsh mates.
Dr The Singh Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 But, but.... I've got loads of Welsh mates. I used to date a welsh woman once also..........never do that again
Alf Bentley Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 The honest third. Everyone's a little bit racist, sometimes. Would say the same: If 1/3 admit being racially prejudiced, 2/3 are in denial! Can exclude most children from that, up to a certain age. Would be interesting to see some research into the process by which a small proportion of the younger population then become extremely racist and most of the rest a little bit racist....
Nick Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I used to date a welsh woman once also..........never do that again Ewe should stop bleating on about her - they're not all the same you know.
Nick Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I don't want a taff living next door to me.. Quite. Finners would be alright though.........
Alf Bentley Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Anyone who has ever said "The Germans have no sense of humour" is racist under the current definition. Maybe it's the definition that's changed, rather than the number of racists? In my experience, many Germans are very humorous...it's the bloody French that are the problem! I wouldn't say "no sense of humour", but certainly a pretty crap one! Whoops, slipped into racist generalisations there! On the plus side, nos amis, les grenouilles d'outre-Manche (the French) do have some delightful geographical features, produce some good food and wine, enjoy a good jaw about politics and philosophy - and les femmes can be charmingly fragrant or feisty in blue jeans. Whoops, slipping into racism and sexism, now! But, but.... I've got loads of Welsh mates. I bet you secretly despise them all, though. I used to date a welsh woman once also..........never do that again I've been out on the town in Cardiff a few times and can empathise. The women of Cardiff and the Valleys, at least, can be very intimidating, particularly en masse. I hope that your ex-fiancée didn't do anything horrible to you with a leek, Doctor? Give me a sweet, brown Punjabi girl any day!

Maybe it's the definition that's changed, rather than the number of racists? If you were saying that people born to German parents naturally lack a sense of humour then yeah possibly, but that comment seems to be referring to culture and a nation's 'character' which is apart from race.
Finnegan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Quite. Finners would be alright though......... I'd shit on your lawn.

You would have to go to the punjab these days to find a sweet punjabi girl these days, the UK ones are nearly as run down as the welsh girls!!

LCFC Rennie Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I have a German mate and he is fvcking hilarious, he takes the piss out of Germany for having no sense of humour. Someone in my French class in High School once got suspended for 2 days for saying 'I like France, apart from the people, they are boring, stubborn, pricks.' He said all of that in French.... J'aime la France, à part les gens, ils sont ennuyeux, têtu, piqûres.

Buce Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 The definition of 'racist' has definitely changed in my lifetime: when I was young, the statement, "I'm not racist", was challenged by, "would you let your daughter marry a n####r?". In truth, not many could answer 'yes'.
Dr The Singh Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Perhaps the survey included only them as being British? = British aswell!!
