Dr The Singh Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 The definition of 'racist' has definitely changed in my lifetime: when I was young, the statement, "I'm not racist", was challenged by, "would you let your daughter marry a n####r?". In truth, not many could answer 'yes'. I like your honesty Bruce, but I don't see that as racist inparticular, it's racial preference, I would want my daughter to marry a British Sikh, but I have nothing against black or white people....the defining line is if your daughter married a black person what would you do??????

I think your preference is more of a cultural one. Purely out of interest - and feel free not to answer - would you be ok with a white Sikh convert (assuming there is such a thing)?

Purely out of interest - and feel free not to answer - would you be ok with a white Sikh convert (assuming there is such a thing)? There are white sikhs!!! I would prefer a British Sikhs from a punjabi background, as you've mentioned, more cultural simularity. I think i'm going to have to create a preferential matrix, a white sikh would be more preferential then a white athiest, white xtrian etc etc
Alf Bentley Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I have a German mate and he is fvcking hilarious, he takes the piss out of Germany for having no sense of humour. Someone in my French class in High School once got suspended for 2 days for saying 'I like France, apart from the people, they are boring, stubborn, pricks.' He said all of that in French.... J'aime la France, à part les gens, ils sont ennuyeux, têtu, piqûres. Back when the last series of Blackadder (the one set in WW1) went out on TV, I had a German girlfriend and she loved that programme almost as much as Fawlty Towers (especially the one with the Germans - "don't mention the war!" and all that). I've got a good mate now who's German and he's a good laugh. Then again, back in 1987 I worked in a winery in Alsace (French border with Germany) and the bourgeois Germans would come over on a Sunday, swamping the streets with their shiny cars, and they all seemed very humourless! Sounds harsh on your classmate! Couldn't the teacher have just had a quiet word about not going OTT and then used the comment for a discussion about the nature of French people? Could have been more productive...but maybe I'm being naive and it would just have descended into chaos. I've spent a lot of time in France and, for what it's worth, I'd say that the French probably are more stubborn than the English, but there are more boring people over here....about the same proportion of pricks! p.s. Your teacher should also have corrected your classmate's French: "piqûre" = a sting/pr1ck from a pin; "bite" = pr1ck, as in a physical penis; "con", "connard" or similar = pr1ck, as in a person held in contempt!
Lionator Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I don't think I'm at all racist in any way. I would say however, that we're all a little xenophobic (fearful not hateful) when it comes to different cultures.
bovril Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Britain is still a country obsessed with wealth and class, so we don't hate immigrants we just hate poor immigrants.
Raj Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Anyone who says thery are not racist,to some degree, are lying bastards! theres a little bit of racism in everyone....even the pope i bet!
purpleronnie Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Anyone who says thery are not racist,to some degree, are lying bastards! theres a little bit of racism in everyone....even the pope i bet! I disagree, I find it baffling why someone would judge another by skin colour or just because they come from another country, makes no sense at all.
Raj Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I disagree, I find it baffling why someone would judge another by skin colour or just because they come from another country, makes no sense at all. In an ideal World you are right. But we dont live in an ideal world and im sure everyone somewhere down the line has thought/said something they is mildly racist or non politically correct. When i started work in an all white place 20 odd years ago i was asked questions like- do i eat sandwiches? whats my nickname? where were you born? Do YOU lot drink alcohol? Racism? perhaps not....ill informed/uneducated maybe
Houdini Logic Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 It's disgusting how racist this country is becoming. I think it's the minorities refusing to intergrate that are creating this general atmosphere of hatred across the whole country. lols

The Year Of The Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I disagree, I find it baffling why someone would judge another by skin colour or just because they come from another country, makes no sense at all. Jocks tend to be tight, the Welsh miserable and the English completely ignorant when abroad. Is there anyone who doesn't truly think that? Same with pikeys, would you trust them to do your driveway?
Finnegan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 I don't think I'm at all racist in any way. I would say however, that we're all a little xenophobic (fearful not hateful) when it comes to different cultures. I wouldn't consider myself racist but to claim you have no racial prejudices would be stupid. Almost everybody has some preconception about other ethnic and cultural groups.

The Year Of The Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Welsh miserable? Really? like I say, tend to. Its only the ones I've come across apart from my lodger. I'm not trying to insult people, my grandparents are jocks in any case.
Finnegan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Culture and race are two different things. Depends on context, really, on the issue of prejudice that the poll is making then I think culture and race along with xenophobic, racist, islamophobic et all are reasonably synonymous.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Poor examples Finnegan I know. My point being I'm agreeing with what you're saying.
Finnegan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 like I say, tend to. Its only the ones I've come across apart from my lodger. I'm not trying to insult people, my grandparents are jocks in any case. I'm not particularly offended, I'm not having the hump! It's just not a common stereotype I'd have associated with us. In fact, the Welsh stereotypical view of the English is overly serious, dour, stern, boring, stuffy, arrogant, etc.
bovril Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Nations are shaped by history and so are the people in them. We had an empire in Britain, we colonised other countries and we have that whole 'white man's guilt' thing. Smaller countries in Africa, Asia or Eastern Europe for example have spent much of their history subjugated by larger nations and so it's kind of natural for a Pole to distrust a Russian or a Bulgarian to slag off the Turks.
Guest MattP Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Would say the same: If 1/3 admit being racially prejudiced, 2/3 are in denial! Can exclude most children from that, up to a certain age. Would be interesting to see some research into the process by which a small proportion of the younger population then become extremely racist and most of the rest a little bit racist.... I'll get it later as I'm on the phone but a study conducted in the US showed infants actually do generally stick to their own race given a choice. The definition of 'racist' has definitely changed in my lifetime: when I was young, the statement, "I'm not racist", was challenged by, "would you let your daughter marry a n####r?". In truth, not many could answer 'yes'. Probably a better question in weeding out genuine racists that todays version of "Do you think Britain should have an immigration policy?" Think Finners has it right, unless you have had an absolute perfect sheltered life I think everyone will hold some sort of prejudice towards someone, given we have had masses of immigration from a lot of quite 'less cultured, less cosmopolitan' countries over the last ten years we are probably doing a pretty good job of importing people with these views into the nation as well, it's very possible that has also contributed towards the increase.
Houdini Logic Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Probably a better question in weeding out genuine racists that todays version of "Do you think Britain should have an immigration policy?" You think anyone who believes we should have an immigration policy is racist???
Finnegan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 You think anyone who believes we should have an immigration policy is racist??? No, he's being a nob claiming that anyone who's even vaguely anti immigration gets called a racist. I really hate that "argument", it's such a load of bollocks and is usually just the lazy self defence of the sort of people that want to be rampant offensive and call anyone who objects "PC."
