England V Italy

Surely if the plan was to double up down our left hand side then Roy would be picking a defensive minded midfielder in the three rather than a striker?

Baines made a feeble attempt at stopping Candreva's delivery

Exactly. You can't call for positive attacking football and then complain that we're not doubled up defensively at all times.

you only realise how good cole is ,when you see the feeble alternatives.

Cole was guilty of much worse than being doubled up on many, many times for England. He would have fared no better, and probably would have given the ball away more.

Oh stfu, he has no chance against two people, end of story. You think the savoiour Cashley would have done any better like that idiot Rio?

I have absolutely no doubt Ashley Cole would have done better.

Baines looked out of his depth.

Fed up with this Welbeck hate, he worked bloody hard tonight, 10 times harder than that fat twat Rooney.

In terms of overall performance, I'd say he was our second best player tonight, after Sterling.

No they were both crap.

Ash Cole is a good defensive option, but Hodgson decided to take two attacking minded left backs one of them with barely any england caps. At least if we took Cole we would have had that extra option of someone defensive and experienced. Luke Shaw a talented young man with a bright future but just simply not ready for the big stage yet.

baines is NOT international class.. cole has 100 caps, if he did worse  .how did he manage that then?

You really, really shouldn't post pissed, your hilarious.

Think we missed John Terry tonight as well, he'd of put one of those countless corners in.

Literally no mention of Gerrard's invisible man performance from anybody else,

Rooney sets up a goal and gets lambasted.

Both below average but England still should have got a point.

Maybe it's because people have been making out like Rooney is:

1) undroppable

2) one of the best players in the world

He is neither, and is consistently poor for England. So people get fed up with him.

Gerrard was poor tonight for the record, but is generally much better for England and is not hyped up nearly as much.

The better team lost simple fact... England swarmed them tonight and played some of the best stuff I have seen since 2004. Italy were jammy and highly negative...

Sort off

I'd say the lesser talented team played above themselves and the better side did just enough. We're better going forwards than them but their ability to close the game out can't be overlooked.

They'll top this group comfortable.

I'd be saying this no matter how many beers I've had, (in fact I regularly do) and it may be news to you but I've never given two shits if people on this forum don't agree. I think most people on here are absolute morons frankly, worshipping Terry and Cole like they've got us further than the quarter finals of a tournament or something.

What's hilarious is people maintaining certain players are world beaters when they've played at several tournaments for England and have failed several times. The facts don't stack up in their favour.

Besides, do people not think Woy would be an absolute cvnt if he picked players who have barely played for their clubs all year? Cos anyone with a brain would think that.

Baines 3 is incredibly harsh. Most of the game had 2 attackers on him and even the best left-backs in the world would struggle with that. Not sure what more he could have done or as so many like to point out, not sure if Ashley Cole would have done much better without support from midfielders in front of him.

Italy sussed out how we'd play Baines without a ball being kicked. Right from the start they stuck an extra midfielder out there to stay on that right win so that if Baines does venture up the field, another England player is brought back out to cover. Then in an attacking sense, there's always 2 players on that side for Baines to handle and it was clear from the start he would need more support.

When it came to the 2nd goal, it was a poor move from Roy to get Welbeck there to try and help him out. And for the guy who crossed it yeah Baines should have done better to hold the player up or block the cross, but it wasn't all his fault (to give him a 3 suggests you think it was/could be?) that he had a poor game.

Was it the midfields fault that Baines turned his back and jumped up in the air to block a cross that? That's embarrassing. His primary job is to defend. Too many people over hype him because he's got a decent whip on him. There's a reason why he was targeted. Because as a defender he's incompetent. I can't actually think of anything that Baines did was good?

And then get hammered later on, we should have done so... but the heat didn't favour us... Italy are simply boring and shite... We deserved to win simples

In the history books.. it don't say 2-1 but Italy were lucky..

The Italian players were much more intelligent and tactically aware and their game plan worked.

I didn't think we'd score when Motta was in the pitch.

If Baines (or Shaw for that matter) is going to play he has to get forward more.

Waste of time having him as a defensive left back - his best attribute is his crossing.

But he can't get forward, because he has no support. Watch when de laet bombs forward, knocks just drops back slightly and covers - baines just didn't get that from his winger today, he couldn't go forward because it'd leave the defence empty.

You're giving him a 3 because he was trying to defend against 2 people. Not for any other reason.

It's funny how nobody ever gets noticed for not blocking a cross unless they need a reason to start rimming Ashley Cole. I see about 20 times a game yet nobody cares 99% of the time. Had Balotelli just missed it you wouldn't have even remembered it (if only Baines was as lucky as Cole was at times).
