England V Italy

When that goal went in I think I upset several people around me, the girls were upset because I had spilt a whole 4 pint Carlsberg jug everywhere and the blokes because I appeared to have rubbed red face paint in all of their new white England shirts

Baines and Johnson were the weak links imo

Was left exposed to often that led to the second goal.

It was not sorted at HT and should have been at the least if not earlier.

Full backs had tough games, little support for either. Rooney needs dropping, he'll pick his game up, the side will be more balanced and it'll send out a message that no-one is above being culled. Lallana to deputise and Wilshere needs to stay well away from the XI.

Lots of positives last night, when going forward especially. All or nothing Thursday!!

It may benefit Rooney being dropped to the bench, see if his game improves by bringing on as sort of super sub.

Tbf from my drunken haze of a memory I thought we were alright and a little unlucky. Two lapses in defensive concentration and we've conceded twice and all our other good work is forgotten. Their first goal was just silly, they have two men on the edge we have one, the spare man has at least 20 seconds to control the ball get it out his feet pick a spot and unfortunately nail it. Second goal was good from their perspective but again bad from ours. Cahill's lost balotelli for the first time all night and he's put his header in.

Our goal was fast, attacking play which stretched them and was nice to see. More of that to come hopefully, cracking ball in (not sure who by I honestly can't remember). I'm sure I do remember us having a fairly decent penalty shout or two but that might've just been drunk patriotic men in a pub getting desperate so inevitably just screaming HANNBALLLL every time a shot was blocked.

Biggest cheer of the night bar the goal (and sterlings goal lol) was when the camera panned to Barkley getting his trackie off. Thought he came on at the right time and looked tidy but Italy just had a bit too much tactical nouse (sp?) for our young enthusiastic side after they'd got a lead.

Overall think it was harsh on us to lose but will hopefully be another massive leaning curve for the likes of welbeck, sturridge, sterling and barkley, as well as the back 4. Everyone will be raring to get at Uruguay especially after seeing even Costa Rica made their defence look like idiots. gonna be a cracking game that.

Come on England.

Did anyone else celebrate thinking that Sterling shot in the first five minutes had gone in?

Genuinely thought the keeper had pushed it into the top corner.

Everyone in the pub I was in was going mad for literally 35 seconds, I didn't think it had gone in at first but then the score at the top left flashed GOAL! in England colours and I went nuts, wasn't until it was replayed that I realised it hadn't gone in.

I make that the first group game we've lost since 1986

Went mental when I thought Sterling had scored. We all celebrated then stopped as we then thought it hadn't gone in. Then the goal thing flashed and we went mental celebrating once again. Absolute trauma when we found out it wasn't in.

When was the last competitive game we actually lost before this?

Another thing that absolute amazes me, you all bitch and moan about being positive and attacking Italy when playing 4-3-3, we do it, and then your surprised when our full backs are under pressure.

You can't have a go at a team playing that formation without leaving yourself open.

Funny how once we play a team that most of the fans would choose and get rid of the 'old guard' that we lose!

Still think we played well yesterday though. Confident we'll beat Uruguay and Costa Rica

yeah i think it was always gonna be that way last night, we went to win and not draw like we have in 4 or 5 games over the last 2 years. shame it didn't work out but as manwell said we were always going to leave full backs/defenders exposed if we set up to attack and unfortunately didn't pay off.

agree that against a slightly worse set of teams i'm hopeful it will work well and we'll get out this group.

Funny reading through all the comments about Sterling's shot. Glad it wasn't just us then! Was watching in a beer garden down here and that erupted too! Glasses and drink flying absolutely everywhere that everyone had just bought for the start of the game. It was mad.

To see 0-0 about 30 seconds later was a massive comedown. Reminded me of Vardy at Reading away this season and QPR away in 09 when Waggy's goal was disallowed.

We lost to Romania in 1998.

I went ****ing mental for the 'goal' too.

Thought we were alright, I just think we were beaten by a better set of players. Onwards, let's go beat Suarez and Costa Rica and hope Italy slip up. I'd like to see Barkley given a run out still.

We actually played well against the Italians last night. Sterling and Welbeck played well. IMO Rooney needs to be dropped against Uruguay and be replaced with Barkley playing behind Sturridge.

This is what my team would be to face Uruguay

                Hart

Johnson -Cahill-Jageilka-  Shaw

            Henderson- Wilshere

Welbeck- Barkley- Lallana

                Sturridge.

But, it ain't going to happen as Woy will not drop Gerrard and Rooney.

My take on the game. We played well, probably our best performance at a World Cup in many years, we just made a few mistakes and look lacking in certain areas. Gerrard made 2 or 3 good passes but other than that was an absolute passenger in the game. Baines needs help down the left which he won't get from Rooney or Wellbeck. Rooney is absolutely wasted on the left, you either play him in one of the other 3 attacking positions or drop him, yes his cross created the goal and he did show at times last night the player he can be, but just please I'd rather he wasn't in the team at all if the 2 options are that or on the left, it's like Paul Scholes all over again, the managers seem to just think 'well, he's our best player so let's just stick him on the left, he'll do a job' and it completely unbalances the team and the talents of the player are pretty much nullified. Henderson was good, Sturridge was decent, Sterling was good, Wellbeck was outstanding from a defensive point of view but I just wish he took a few more chances with the ball further up the pitch, he seems content to just make the simple pass time and again and just doesn't use his pace to scare defenders which he has the ability to do. Rooney was good, other than that corner and the chance he probably should of taken, definitely positive signs from him. The 2 centre backs were solid enough. Joe Hart looked suspect, the one save I remember making he made a pigs ear of and was very fortunate Jags was so switched on when he was content to stand in no mans land rather than making an effort to get back on his line when Balotelli was just invited to chip him. Overall positive, but this is a world cup and we've 2 games to get through the group, playing well and losing in this situation is obviously not good enough because if we do that again against Uruguay we're as good as out. The fact Glen Johnson has 50+ caps and is our best right back is truly depressing, he just isn't very good imo. Overall a good performance but really that counts for nil If we don't get the results we need in the next 2 games. I do think we were flattered a bit second half because Italy were so content to let us do what we wanted, and other than Rooneys effort we never really looked like breaking them down. A player like Sterling, or Sturridge and to a certain extent Barkley need space to run in to to be most effective, and when you have a team with 10 players campled inside/on the edge of their box then they are pretty much nullified from that point of view, I think in that situation the Ox is our best option because he can beat players in tight places and get his head up, so if we go behind against Uruguay and they sit really deep against us I just hope he's fit because he's the player we've got that can unlock the door. Overall positive but not happy.

My team to face Uruguay

               Hart

Johnson-Cahill-Jags-Baines

     Henderson-Oxlade

Sterling-Rooney-Llalana

             Sturridge

I'd really like to get Barkley in there somewhere and would be tempted to go 4-4-2. Gerrard looked like a tired, lethargic player last night and I don't think a lot of games in a short time in an uncomfortable climate will do him any favours, but he's the captain and won't be dropped, but on last nights performance he certainly should be.

We lost to Romania in 1998.

Oh shit we did, remember us beating Columbia as I remember the free kick, struggling to remember what the other game was.

Was just thinking the last time we opened a tournament playing good football we also lost to a really good side (and winner of the last World Cup but one), France, in 2004.

We had a young attacker who lit up the tournament and we went on to romp the last 2 group games.

Would take that again now.
