LeicesterBran Posted 25 June 2014 Posted 25 June 2014 Does anyone know any good cold remedies ? As I have had a nasty cold for two days. And in the next couple of days I have some important stuff and don't want a stupid cold from preventing from doing what I have to do. Thanks
Monk Posted 25 June 2014 Posted 25 June 2014 Grated fresh ginger, lemon juice hot water and honey. Works every time for me.
Stuliasz Posted 25 June 2014 Posted 25 June 2014 Everyone reacts differently but I find that once I have a cold, I just have to see it through. The symptoms can be reduced somewhat with the usual medication but it just needs time to be flushed away. The best over the counter product I've used against a cold is this: http://www.boots.com/en/Vicks-First-Defence-nasal-spray-15ml_21963, but it's only effective if you use it at the very outset when you think you have a cold coming on. Stopped a number of colds in their tracks for me but even so it's not 100% effective.

yorkie1999 Posted 25 June 2014 Posted 25 June 2014 Half a pint of boiled fizzy lemonade with a shot of whiskey in it. Go bed, wake up next day drenched in sweat but no cold. Magic medicine.

Magic medicine. I might try that, sounds nice I know there's no cure for cold, some things may temporarily alleviate some symptoms - from my childhood days I still treat myself to hot Ribena when I'm bunged up. Also when I was skiing in Bulgaria and felt a bit rough one day I had grog (tea, lemon, honey and what must have been at least 2 shots of rum) and that definitely cleared my sinuses for a while And scrambled eggs and toast. They should put rations of scrambled eggs in first aid kits. They always make you feel a bit better whatever your ailment is (unless it's an egg intolerance)

stripeyfox Posted 26 June 2014 Posted 26 June 2014 Call me cynical but I'm sure they pharmaceutical companies could come up with a cure of they wanted but make more money out of selling Strepsils, lemsip and Vicks etc?

It's not that simple - cold viruses (like most viruses) can't effectively be cured as they are so complex and constantly mutating. What's worse with colds is that there are hundreds of strains, so even vaccinations would be ineffective. Not really worth worrying about though, as colds are pretty harmless unless you have immune system problems
Fox92 Posted 27 June 2014 Posted 27 June 2014 I bet you do!! I wondered how long a response like that would take!
