Guest kristianity77 Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 So England are due to drop to 20th place in the rankings tomorrow, the lowest for 18 years apparently. Even so, the 18 year ago drop doesn't really even count because we didn't have to qualify for Euro 96 so at least back then there was a valid reason for the drop. I know a lot of people don't think it means much but more importantly, it puts us currently out and way down in terms of seeds for forthcoming qualification groups. With having a relatively weak group for the 2016 Euros that's not likely to change much over the next year or so even if we win most of the games. In fact, a dodgy result here or there and it looks like we could plummet a fair ways further down. Is the England side on a downward spiral now which will put us alongside the other British teams like Wales and Scotland?
Hugo Sanchez Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Weren't Switzerland seeded lol Fifa ranking mean nothing
StanSP Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Good. About our level and hopefully people see that England aren't all cracked up they're meant to be right now. Our rankings before in previous years have been an extreme over-statement of where we really should be.
Guest kristianity77 Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Weren't Switzerland seeded lol Fifa ranking mean nothing Correct, but even still, they had a far better world cup than we did. They were ranked 6th, and only lost to Argentina in the last 16 a couple of minutes away from a Penalty shootout, which is about the same period that Germany beat them yesterday. So there is some merit to them.

We shouldn't get much lower, we should win most of the qualifiers to rack up points and then we've got some winnable friendlies.

Jon the Hat Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 The ranking system is crap. We have been way too high for some time.
Fox92 Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 The ranking system is rubbish but I don't argue with that. I can't see us progressing in anytime soon.
Guest kristianity77 Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Alot easier group and Argentina didn't hardly set the tournament alight did they ? What you mean is, they didn't play pretty football for most of it. Which I agree with. However, they went through the entire tournament finding a way of winning scrappy games, and on balance of play, probably edged the final also.
Dan Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Our awful performance in Brazil could well stop us qualifying for Russia in my opinion. This could well be used to our advantage as it may give us the kick up the arse we deserve. Alot easier group and Argentina didn't hardly set the tournament alight did they ? Against two sides that we failed to beat in the weeks leading up to the World Cup.
Jace Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 To be honest I don't care too much any more for the seeding after this latest World Cup, look at our group with England, Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica
foxes_rule1978 Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 FIFA rankings don't exactly give a true reflection, but they are important due to seeding. We should be playing the right games to help our ranking, rather than just book the wrong friendlies that will not help our ranking.
MC Prussian Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Alot easier group and Argentina didn't hardly set the tournament alight did they ? You mean apart from winning games and getting to the final - something England can only dream of at the moment.

Yeah, why are most of our freindlies against minnows and part timers?
Donut Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Weren't Switzerland seeded lol Fifa ranking mean nothing Switzerland clearly had a better world cup than England, or am I missing something? I think the rankings are a lot better than people give credit for to be honest.

That said, qualifying via the play-offs would be memorable.
Hugo Sanchez Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Switzerland clearly had a better world cup than England, or am I missing something? I think the rankings are a lot better than people give credit for to be honest. Ok by that logic though, it's like saying Spain and Italy should be seeded lower then Switzerland because they went futher Switzerland got so far in the seedings by playing friendlies against shit teams ...

Not really, over reaction as typical. England will win their Euro qualifying group and be seeded for Euro 16 and will climb back up the rankings. Jesus one bad world cup and your acting like we're Scotland now. You do realise Italy haven't got out of two world cup groups now ...
Guest MattP Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 France should have been seeded ahead of the Swiss imo. That said some seemed to think we should have been, now that would have been embarrassing. Looking like a play off for us in 2018.
Hugo Sanchez Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Why is it Matt P ? We will win our Qualifying group and it's possible we could make the quarter finals at Euro 2016. Why after 1 bad world cup are you coming up with this ??

You do realise Italy haven't got out of two world cup groups now ... Yes, but they got to the final of the Euros sandwiched in between that. Also, I wouldn't say its an over reaction. I'd go as far as to say that as a team, we are actually for once somewhere in the rankings that we deserve to be.
Guest kristianity77 Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Why is it Matt P ? We will win our Qualifying group and it's possible we could make the quarter finals at Euro 2016. Why after 1 bad world cup are you coming up with this ?? Its not "one bad world cup" though is it. Its slow but steady decline which is why the thread exists in the first place. Look at the stats: 2014 World Cup - Bottom of the group 2012 Euros - Quarter Finals 2010 World Cup - Last 16 (and thrashed) 2008 Euros - Didn't Qualify 2006 World Cup - Quarter Finals 2004 Euros - Quarter Finals 2002 World Cup - Quarter Finals And regarding our qualifying group, I'd be shocked if we finished above Switzerland. Shaqiri by himself will have a field day with our defence.
