I'm not overly-sensitive about jokes about dead people. I just felt it was crass and inappropriately timed.and definitely not funny

Breaking now that he was in the early stages of Parkinson's Disease. Probably contributed to his decision in that he didn't want to go through the depressing effects.

Interesting to see the (justified) sympathy shown for Robin Williams' tragic death, compared to the condemnation that many meted out to Peaches Geldof (sometimes the same posters).

 

I appreciate that Williams was a higher achiever, and probably a more appealing character to many, but their deaths weren't entirely dissimilar:

- 63-year-old man, A-list celebrity, struggles with addiction issues and personal torments, tragically kills himself (deliberately) -> Great sympathy

- 25-year-old woman, Z-list celebrity, struggles with addiction issues and personal torments, tragically kills herself (accidentally) -> Lots of people condemn her and say they have "no sympathy"

 

Both cases are truly tragic, in my view. Two people who struggled with personal difficulties and ultimately couldn't handle them.

 

Is Williams more worthy of sympathy because of his age? Because he deliberately killed himself, rather than dying from his addiction? Because he achieved more (in which case we're all doomed to condemnation!)?

 

I've only ever seen a couple of his films and wasn't a massive fan, but it's truly tragic when someone sees suicide (or drug abuse) as the only way to address their problems - as a friend of mine did about 3-4 years back.

The difference is that Robin Williams actually had talent and at some point in our lives made us laugh. Whereas Peaches Geldof had no impact of note on most people at all, and if not born to Bob would have been a nobody.

I've noticed the same Alf. For some its Depression is a terrible thing to cope with.' for others its their own fault.'

 

One in three of us will suffer anxiety or depression in their lifetime.The reason people breakdown is because they try to be strong no matter what happens in life. Events can build up. Relationship breakdown loss of job bereavement or similar but they try and hold it together until it snaps.

 

Anyway it is sad for their families and to think they took that course of action.

I think the " Robin Williams was funny" is debatable.

Peaches Geldorf set her self up as an ideal mother which she obviously wasn't. Not that I'm glad that she's dead or that I'm condemning her but there are different circumstances.
