FerrisBueller Posted 8 September 2015 Posted 8 September 2015 Ah! There are a few of us salty old dogs out here....and that's a message to you, Webbo! I still can't believe that I got to see Prince Buster live at a festival in 2007. One of the few times that I've felt genuine awe at seeing someone live (Jerry Lee Lewis & Dr. John also spring to mind). Rico played with him in the 60s, I believe. I got put onto "the Prince" by all the 2-Tone shenanigans back in 79/80 or whenever it was, so to see him live 25+ years later, I was gobsmacked. He was still good, too....not as good as Dr. John, but good. I saw Dr. John at the Sage in Newcastle a few years back, damn that cat can still play! (Young Salty Dog)
johnny the fox Posted 14 September 2015 Posted 14 September 2015 RIP former england captain Brian Close. 84. famous for chesting the ball away against the west indies.
Guest MattP Posted 14 September 2015 Posted 14 September 2015 It's scary watching that Close innings in this day and age. A towel for protection against Garner, Marshall and Holding. Brave brave man.
Rincewind Posted 14 September 2015 Posted 14 September 2015 On my nsn newsffeed it say englands oldest batsman has died. No wonder they are shit if they play 84yr olds.
fuchsntf Posted 15 September 2015 Posted 15 September 2015 Brian Close, I spent an whole hour in this mans presence, when I was a teenager, he was due to play against Leic'shire and cant remember the reason, but wasnt selected, so just listening to him talking sport, was an experience . Everybody mentioned his brave batting against WI, but his fielding postion so close to the bat, always impressed me more.
Alf Bentley Posted 15 September 2015 Posted 15 September 2015 It's scary watching that Close innings in this day and age. A towel for protection against Garner, Marshall and Holding. Brave brave man. Brave, brave man, indeed. Did you see the photos showing the bruising to his body afterwards? I didn't remember that from the time, but do remember his performance (I was a teenager). It was a surprise when he was called up as he was well into his 40s. I presume they just wanted someone who could show a bit of resistance, as none of the younger batsmen were capable of doing it (maybe David Steele briefly, or was that a bit later?). That was an unbelievable bowling attack. Can you imagine facing Andy Roberts and Holding, then first change, for a nice relief, you get Marshall and Garner? If I'd have been any good at cricket, I'd have quit the game. Then a whole other generation came along: Ambrose, Walsh and that lot. I suppose the Aussies a few years back must be the Test team that remained dominant for the longest period, but the Windies seemed like the most dominant, albeit over a shorter period. Batsmen like Richards, Greenidge, Haynes, Lloyd and co caning it all around the ground, too..... Scary stuff, and extraordinary stuff to go out there like that, getting repeatedly hit and barely flinching most of the time.... Hats off, Brian!

Alf Bentley Posted 15 September 2015 Posted 15 September 2015 Bryan Merrick. Former bassist with "The Damned" for any old punks( im sure it was someone else though) As an "old punk" (sort of), I had to check into this. According to Wikipedia, Bryn Merrick was bassist for several years in the 80s - I saw that line-up a couple of times, but not the initial one. The original mid-70s bassist was actually Captain Sensible, before he switched to lead.
