shailen Posted 24 December 2014 Posted 24 December 2014 i have attached the relevant stats to this post of how the bottom team has done after christmas. Surprisingly and encouraging for us, Sunderland had 10 points at the same stage last year and their good run only started in late march/early april i think. Its not all doom and gloom, we do face a difficult challenge, but it is one that we can overcome imo.
Webbo Posted 24 December 2014 Posted 24 December 2014 So 2 out of 22 years have escaped relegation, that unsurprisingly not encouraging to me.
Dan Posted 24 December 2014 Posted 24 December 2014 Whilst stats can be interesting, people have got to pipe down with this "bottom at Christmas" thing as if it has a single bearing on our season.
shailen Posted 24 December 2014 Author Posted 24 December 2014 well considering most people seem to think we are doomed, clearly there is hope. Obviously we are in a bad position, but it has been done before and it can be done again. West Brom were in a worse position as well in 04/05.

Interesting though that Loyd Dyer was in their squad at the time.
AKCJ Posted 24 December 2014 Posted 24 December 2014 If we go down, it won't be because we'll be bottom at Christmas.

And I'm trying to bring some positivity in the spirit of the season, since half of our fanbase seems to have already accepted relegation as our fate.
foxes_rule1978 Posted 24 December 2014 Posted 24 December 2014 I see a lot of relegated against those team names, doesn't really encourage me that much

And I'm trying to bring some positivity in the spirit of the season, since half of our fanbase seems to have already accepted relegation as our fate. I'm well aware where we are. The irony of what you're putting here is that you're trying to make out that you're being positive - saying there's effectively a 20 in 22 chance of us being relegated this season. I'm saying that it isn't true, and what's happened in previous years, however interesting it may be, has no bearing on how we will perform this season. Winning games this season against this seasons teams is all that matters.

Stats don't always apply in the same way to all teams, and there are so many other permutations to consider. However, given the way we have played, which hasn't been that awful as our position would suggest, I wanted to make the point other teams have recovered and so can we.
MooseBreath Posted 25 December 2014 Posted 25 December 2014 Well I, for one, am even less hopeful now than when I entered the thread. One in eleven chance. That's pretty desperate.

Yeah I agree with you, it isn't beyond us at all. I suppose it'd be pretty impressive to add us to that list if we were to go and pull it off. Wasn't intended as a dig at you, by the way
Guest Col city fan Posted 25 December 2014 Posted 25 December 2014 I'm still optimistic but let's have it right, those stats make for dismal reading. Gotta win Boxing Day. Nowt else will do.
MC Prussian Posted 25 December 2014 Posted 25 December 2014 They changed their manager, in November. Interesting though that Loyd Dyer was in their squad at the time. Yep. For a few games in between late August and late October only (four to be precise; all as a substitute) before he was loaned out to Coventry.
shade Posted 25 December 2014 Posted 25 December 2014 come on, we all know deep down in our guts, nige is going to turn it around and we'll stay up.
Guest ttfn Posted 25 December 2014 Posted 25 December 2014 Jesus Christ that west ham side with Cole, Sinclair, Di Canio etc got relegated despite getting 28 points in the second half of the season!
boots60 Posted 25 December 2014 Posted 25 December 2014 On a positive note the bottom 3 on new years day 2014 were Sunderland, West Ham & Palace. All 3 stayed up.

Moreso gotta beat hull..to get off the bottom..there's a start. If we lose that we are adrift at sea with a paddle made of candy floss
jammie82uk Posted 25 December 2014 Posted 25 December 2014 The only positive I get from that table and it is certainly clutching at straws is that both teams to survive both had 10 points at this point like us

Guest ttfn Posted 25 December 2014 Posted 25 December 2014 Looking at that fixture list unless we take at least 6 points from Villa, Palace and Stoke at home we're going to be miles adrift by March. If we're going to stay up it's going to be by virtue of a late surge. Those last 8 games are all winnable.
