fleckneymike Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I am aware that this might seem a strange question but looking back over Pearson's two periods in charge have we ever out thought another side or have we simply always had better players? Obviously these two factors might not be mutually exclusive (and I am not entirely sure this is the case myself) but from our league 1 campaign through to last season's record breaking title win I can't recall us tactically beating our opponents or beating a 'bigger' or 'better' side, we've always seemed to have superior players in each position. This season when faced with not having superior players we have understandably struggled but unlike the moderately better performing sides like Barnsley we aren't used to having to out think/manouvre our opponents or nulify a specific opposing player.
Webbo Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I don't think anyone would argue we had better players than Man U. Whether we out thought them or outfought them is debatable though.
ealingfox Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 Yeah every time we've won under Pearson it's been blind luck really, certainly wasn't any competent football management involved. League One was child's play etc etc.
Fox92 Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 We certainly didn't have the best squad last season.
Finnaldo Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I guess when you have the tactics right like our other seasons with Nige you don't really need that element and you could argue it's one of the issues when we've got on bad runs, like 2012/13 and this season, but normally Pearson has pulled it together in time to save us and then build the following year. Personally that's why I'd keep Pearson on regardless of what happens as he often has amended the faults of the previous season whilst consolidating the areas we did better in.

League One was child's play etc etc. That isn't what I am saying, he after all assembled the squads which were superior than the opponents, what I am asking is whether we're used to having to think and plot our way out of more challenging situations.
fleckneymike Posted 31 December 2014 Author Posted 31 December 2014 We certainly didn't have the best squad last season. I'd argue we weren't far off, which other squad would you have prefered?
Fox92 Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I'd argue we weren't far off, which other squad would you have prefered? I don't think we were far off either but you could argue Watford? Wigan? QPR? all had better squads.
ScouseFox Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 When we done Burnley last season id say it slwas
Guest ttfn Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I think Pearson tactically out-thought Zola in the play off semis in 2013 but they had 2 really good strikers which won them the game. The Manchester United game, albeit a bit of a roller coaster was also a bit of a masterpiece from Pearson in his team, effectively nullifying Blind (who had completed 100 passes in their previous game) and Rooney by matching their formation. But yeah most of the time we've just had better players. When we done Burnley last season id say it slwas With ballon d'or nominee David Jones in centre mid the only conclusion is that we must have out-thought them.
fleckneymike Posted 31 December 2014 Author Posted 31 December 2014 I don't think we were far off either but you could argue Watford? Wigan? QPR? all had better squads. I'd say only QPR. Who from Watford's first XI (or bench) would you have had over our first XI?
queensguardfox Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 What about spurs? High pressing line, closing down etc... we may have lost but the tactics spot on get in there faces dont let them play football.
Xen Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I'd say only QPR. Who from Watford's first XI (or bench) would you have had over our first XI? Deeneyyyyyyy. *Ahem*
The Doctor Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I'd say only QPR. Who from Watford's first XI (or bench) would you have had over our first XI? Anya definitely.
Fox92 Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I'd say only QPR. Who from Watford's first XI (or bench) would you have had over our first XI? Ekstrand and Deeney. It's a bit tough considering we actually won the league.

lukedlcfc Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 QPR away last season, soaked up the pressure hit them on the break
shailen Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 I'd say only QPR. Who from Watford's first XI (or bench) would you have had over our first XI? lloyd dyer
foxes_rule1978 Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 Man U, Stoke and Hull were all beaten and draws with Arsenal, Everton, and Sunderland.
BlackburnClaret Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 When we done Burnley last season id say it slwas That could have been the best cast ever, if only I could guess was "slwas" was supposed to have meant.
Babylon Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 So, before last season started pretty much every one on here said "this squads not good enough", "we've not bought enough players", "look at the teams coming down" etc etc. And now with hindsight after we get promotion, that's nothing to do with Pearson tactically and all to do with us having the best squad. Did we also have the best squad in the league the season we came up from league one? Yeah right. I'll happily admit Pearson is no tactical genius, I'll also admit our recruitment has been good the years Pearson has been here. But the leagues are littered with teams that had expensive squads, ex premier league squads etc that have failed. To once again try and pull any achievement away from Pearson by again suggesting it has little to do with him is tiresome. As tiresome as the people who always used to give Steve Walsh all the credit for us doing anything good, because "he picked the players", something which, funnily enough has vanished from the vocabulary of those who said it when things were going well for Pearson. We have a good mixture, good recruitment and a decent manager.

We have a good mixture, good recruitment and a decent manager. Well we definitely had the best squad the year we came up from League One. That is not to diminish Pearson's achievements in any way - we've seen time and again that having the best players doesn't guarantee anything without good management.
Bettsj2 Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 Away at Millwall last season around Christmas. Played 4 central defenders and a defensive midfielder. Outmuscled them for the entire game and came away with an emphatic victory.
Babylon Posted 31 December 2014 Posted 31 December 2014 Well we definitely had the best squad the year we came up from League One. I probably wasn't clear, I was talking about the season after we came up. The play off season. A team with Fryatt, Waghorn, Gallagher, Wellens, Dyer, Oakley, Howard etc. Players absolutely slated on here for being crap.
