Sometimes I forget how good we were in the late 90's, beating utd at OT just 18 months before they won the treble and were plauded for being one of the greatest teams ever assembled.

Parker, Izzet, Lennon. Have we ever had a better midfield? It irritates me slightly that the narrative is often 'O'Neill worked wonders with a bunch of journeymen and lower-league players'. That squad was incredibly talented all over the pitch, if anything 10th that season was an under-achievement.

17 years ago tomorrow I lost my virginity then.

Didn't go Old Trafford that day though.

Talk about the best weekend ever.

Damn right, that midfield three was absolutely superb.

That Man U game was one of the highlights of the season for me. We'd not won in the League since the end of November and the previous week we had lost 3-0 in the Cup at Selhurst sodding Park - the first time Palace had won there all season, and the only City match my then 16yo daughter has ever seen. If I remember rightly, Cottee had been on loan for the previous few weeks at Birmingham, and had only just returned to City.

It was a great day out. I went up the previous evening to stay with my brother, and we went to the match together: brilliant atmosphere from the away fans - about two thousand of us out-sang the prawn sandwich brigade all afternoon. But in many ways the best bit for me was going back to London via Manchester Piccadilly where all the Old Trafford "faithful" were heading back to Surrey via Euston on a football special: huge queues of the fvckers, with kids dressed head-to-toe in Man U colours and looking utterly bewildered. Never felt better to be a City fan.

I do hope that 31 January is another day of good fortune for us, but I have my doubts: best we can hope for, I think, is a 1-1 draw thanks to a dodgy penalty. But what do I know.
