Jon the Hat Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 I suspect more people might have come forward if it was over land.
Nick Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 Always best to be alert, I reckon. Bit of weekend homework for you: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-31537705 - BBC says be afraid - your within range of Russian weaponry.

Bellend Sebastian Posted 20 February 2015 Author Posted 20 February 2015 I suspect more people might have come forward if it was over land. Some woman was quoted yesterday as claiming that it was, and although she may have been completely making it up, she was pretty sure of what she'd seen. When someone shouts 'Bear' now, you're not going to know if you're about to be devoured or blown to atoms. I, for one, will enjoy the unpredictability. We really shouldn't put up with that nonsense. We should ask the EU to write a strongly worded letter. Preferably an open one communicated via social media
Head Honcho Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 The TU-95 carry cruise missiles with a range of up to 3000 km. Moscow is less than 2900 km. It's a bit late to start worrying now. This is standard operating procedure and is nothing new to those in the military. Have the media now decided that this is now news after events in The Ukraine?
Bellend Sebastian Posted 20 February 2015 Author Posted 20 February 2015 It's never too late to start worrying, HH. I never said it was helpful

The Russians stopped these patrols some years back and restarted in the last year or two I believe.
ADK Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 Bombers are all a bit 1950's, in fact the "Bear" first flew a few months after the Vulcan.
Mike Oxlong Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 Disappointed. Thought it might have been about a new series of Gladiators
Head Honcho Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 Bombers are all a bit 1950's, in fact the "Bear" first flew a few months after the Vulcan. It's a magnificent plane mind.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 Bears are massive bombers, Foxbats are fighters. Not possible to confuse the two.
AdamN Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 The Russians stopped these patrols some years back and restarted in the last year or two I believe. Pretty sure they've been doing it for several years, albeit infrequently. The first encounter for the Typhoon was in 2007: http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/pictures-raf-typhoon-intercepts-russian-tupolev-tu-95-bomber-216243/

Carl the Llama Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Having read the article I still don't know what a Foxbat is, so I guess the answer is no.
Biggin Hill Fox Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 My mate in the RAF reckons this never went away- went to see him when working up near Kinloss a few years back and they were, in his words, 'playing silly buggers' that week He said its went one week they buzzed us then the next we'd do the same back

Bellend Sebastian Posted 21 February 2015 Author Posted 21 February 2015 Having read the article I still don't know what a Foxbat is, so I guess the answer is no. Thank goodness I'm here. The Mig-31 is the Foxbat. Why the article didn't disclose that, I can only guess. Some would say that the names don't matter, but that's just being lazy, I reckon, and not the sort of attitude that's going to save you from the labour camps when the Russkies come, which they're bound to. Probably
ADK Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 The Mig-31 is actually given the name foxhound. Foxbat is the reporting name for the Mig-25.

Bloody hell, you're right, of course. Mind you, it is the best part of 30 years since I was really into all this shit. Well done, you've passed the test. You're in charge of civil defence. Frankly I'm far too busy
Parafox Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 Bit late 'cos I've been on holiday. Wednesday evening we saw 2 Typhoon fighter jets fly low over the farmhouse we were renting in Cornwall... Little did we know... it's kinda scary really, we thought they were on some sort of training exercise (Re-post from "how was your day" thread)
