Relegation - The Facts

Recommended Posts

So before you some of you complain that I am not supporting the club or being a doom monger, I just thought I would share some facts about relegation and what the statistics show. Some on this forum seem to believe that we are just going to bounce back and that Nigel is God and it will be easy.. I don't..

Anyway, digest these stats and if anyone wants to discuss then I will be at the FAY cup match tonight watching my god son playing for us.

21.5% of teams were promoted immediately

32.1% of teams were promoted within 2 season

Twelve of the 85 teams that won the Championship within three years of relegation. Eleven have suffered a second relegation within the same period. Which means that over a three-year period, you're almost as likely to be relegated again as you are to win the division.

Teams that didn't get promoted or relegated in either of their first two seasons back in the Championship have an average league position of 13.4 in their third season. In essence, that means that if you're still kicking around two seasons after getting relegated, chances are you're actually worse than the average Championship team.

There are two conclusions.

1) If you get relegated, get yourselves back up as quickly as humanly possible. It only gets harder.

2) If you support a Big Team - the sort that doesn't get relegated - then be bloody thankful.

How anyone said that... or have they said they think we has as good as or better chance with him as we do someone else? I don't think anyone believes it will be easy.

Yes. It's not the cakewalk some of our fans seem to think it will be. Because we'd bounced back quick in both 95/96 and then 02/03 fans in 04/05 expected the second tier to be a breeze.. Took us 10 years to come back and occured via another relegation.

We need some divine intervention this season.

Honestly... I think some do...

Yeah I think Babylon is trying to establish why you think that. Is it based on anything anyone's said on Foxes Talk?

How many of those clubs kept their managers that got them up and how did they fare in the championship after relegation?

I think that says the challenge is keeping most of the squad together. We suffered heavy losses in the summer of 2004 and could only afford to replace them with what the Fox Fanzine termed "The Last of the Summer Signings".

I'm sure there will always be some people (some people thought we'd finish about 8th this season lol ). But I don't think it's general opinion, not by a long shot.

These facts were already in another thread

A point to which I asked, how many of those that were relegated kept their manager, and how many of them was the actual manager that took them up in the first place

Because people are throwing Fulham & cardiff around like their insane owners and multiple managers has any bearing whatsoever on a stable club (like we potentially would be in that situation) trying to do the same... and why has our relegation in '04 carry any weight to our current plight?

This is just ridiculous. Most the the teams that get relegated and do badly have been on a downwards spiral for a while aren't set up for the championship have lots of players with big egos and huge wages. We don't really have that we will have a very good championship side that are level headed and not on stupid wages, and the same manager that got us promoted. (smashed the league)

anyway we aren't even relegated yet....

If getting back to the Premiership is so difficult, making sure we don't need to is the best option.

Obviously that is easier said than done, but I'm sure we have the squad to do so IF they can play to the level shown against most teams lately.

To do that we need the quality players on the pitch NOT the bench, and Kramaric as a striker not a midfielder with nobody ahead of him.

After the Man City game we will have 7 home matches remaining out of the 11 to play.

Not time yet to say ' WE ARE DOOMED ' and if a bit of fortune could go our way for a change, winning 4 of them is not asking too much. That would not leave many bonuses required from the other 7 games. Beating all or most of the teams around us will be vital though.

I think that Nigel is God and it will be easy!  :scarf:

Promotion is not guaranteed, Nigel moves in a mysterious way: His wonders to perform.

I say it every time there are some kind of statistics like this but there are far too many variables for them to be used definitively. It doesn't take into account teams' strengths and weaknesses that may be beneficial in one league and not in another (you could argue that's been our problem this season). You cannot use the past to make a completely accurate judgement on how we would perform next season in the Championship. In-fact it's almost totally irrelevant.

You spelt GOD incorrectly. It should be DOG.

Now that's what I call #BANTER

Obviously as statistics indicate you don't get relegated first season after getting over 100 pints but we've well and truly tore up all statistics this season.

Thing is though, I think we're set up well off the field (down to both Nigel and the owners) and that's an advantage. The three relegated teams from last season - Cardiff, Norwich, Fulham - all had dramatic seasons in the Premier League. Not saying we'll win the league straight away, football doesn't work like that (especially the Championship) but we're set up well off field. If we can keep some of our key players, and the manager, then why not challenge for the top six again.

Do you really think we will have a good championship side to bounce back with?,I am not so sure.

I think this summer will be one big upheaval, players out of contract, players out of favour, the likes of Mahrez,James,Kramaric and even Schlupp could be well be sold.

Could well be a big rebuilding process, and if so will the Thais trust Nigel again.

I believe Norwich left the permiership after two seasons completely debt free.

Can someone please find one example of this (that wasn't said as a joke)? I don't think anyone has said it will be easy! People, myself included, simply think we are in a far better position than a lot of previously relegated teams have been. I don't think that's too wide of the mark either. It's been repeated over and over again but my initial points, a while back, were that it's likely the core of our squad could stay together (having got us up last time), our manager is likely to stay (again masses of Championship experience), we won't (hopefully) have the mess of a panic appointment towards the end of this season causing us problems at the start of the next season and overall we are debt free and hopefully the wage budget is sensible (rumours of 30k cap, haven't overspent in prem, new contracts possibly contain relegation clauses etc...). My opinion is we are in a stronger position to bounce back up than many other teams have been. No one is saying we will easily do it. As fans we have too much experience of the Championship to know how hard it is!!

James will be off and without him Drinkwater will be a shadow of what he was last season.

Nugent will be another year older and so less effective than last season.

Nigel Pearson is a GOD! We will bounce back with style. Guaranteed!

One might ask that if we go down with Nige, what actually would be the point of going back up again with him - he sure aint learning this season...........
