Just watchin the england v france rugby game and its just showed me how proffesional thier refs are than in football... theres no egos just a desire to get the right decision (with the help of video replays).. explanations at the time of thier decisions.. and all this happens in no time at all... why do we in football let refs with huge egos make so many mistakes with no comeback..costing teams like ours points.. it really does amaze me! Surely its time for things to change...

I agree with your points entirely but let's have some balance, compare the players in football and rugby regarding talking to the referee and how they players in each sport handle theirselves with issues with the referee.

Comes hand in hand, rugby players believe the ref has got it right nearly all the time. Quite the opposite for football..

Is simple, when the idiots come at you shouting & waving imaginary cards, tell them to walk away, if they don't, book them.

It's the only way you'll stamp this nonsense out.

I do also believe the referees need to be more open & transparent with their decisions.

We could learn a lot from Rugby in terms of refs - would be particularly interested in seeing football refs mic'd up and the crowd able to listen to them explain their decisions, I'd love to hear for instance Mike Jones trying to explain why he thinks the face is a hand.

Simple, you have the so called fourth official looking at a laptop, watching a replay, he talks to the ref through the earpiece, 'he dived - no pen', job done.

Its astonishing in this day and age you can have a whole stadium who know that it is the wrong decision immediately and nothing can be done?

How hard can it be?

Shocking refs in English football, seem to get a lot of big decisions wrong.

In their defence the sooner they use the technology availble, it will keep happening, no excuses for poor decisions then, pearson keeps mentioning it, and for once I agree with him

I'd love for referees to have microphones on them but I can't see it happening any time soon - there's just way too much abusive language used that will be picked up.

The difference in levels of respect in the 2 sports is huge. Players know their place in rugby when it comes to talking to referees. In football, players seem to have such elevated egos and they don't realise referees are the authoritative figure (even if they make unbelievably idiotic decisions). You also have the help of video referees in rugby which is a pivotal point. When you have the trust from the players knowing that one official looking at a decision time and time again to confirm the correct decision will it work in football as it does in rugby.

The problem with video replays for anything other than offsides, is the debate which can be made regarding a decision.

Some will say it's a foul others won't, in cricket for example the replay as to PROVE the umpire got it wrong. For obvious decisions then yeh but too many are open to debate, and 4th officials will just stick up for the ref.

Maybe it won't be the 4th official making the decision. Change that role to just keeping the managers/staff from being bellends towards each other. Have someone sitting up in the stands in their own booth/box whatever making a decision regardless of if the on-pitch referee got it right or wrong. The referees on the pitch just have to suck it up and realise that if the video ref corrects him, then so be it.

I believe that the match officials this season for the Premier League have been really poor. Period.

I think that the difference between rugby and football though is interpretation. A challenge can be described as anything from fair, hard, horrific with people demanding anything from play on to a red card. This is what makes football unique and allows people to be so opinionated.

Officiating in a lot of other sports is much more straight forward where an incident is black and white. The referee may not see something, but if he does see it you know that everyone else that sees it will come to the same decision because of how straightforward it is. In football, several people can see one incident and come up with several different decisions.

That's why a fourth official watching it on a monitor really defeats the point of having a referee because then who is making the decisions?

Are there enough refs to have so many officials at a game? Unless they just hire a security bloke for pitch side.

Probably not and possibly why it hasn't been explored yet.

The game's just too fast paced now for the ref to keep up. I think some sort of technology to help the officials is almost inevitable in the future.

Nice to see you again yesterday mate.

Worst decision of the day was 3 minutes' injury time for a half which had 4 goals, 5 subs and a penalty delay, not to mention time wasting. Think we might have ended up playing closer to 5 which still wasn't enough.

This has been the case for years. One of many things that Rugby does better than football. The amount of respect they command and the lengths the team of officials go to to get the right decision is on a whole other level.

The FA could learn so much from Rugby on how to officiate a game, but they choose not to.

Nothing to do with the FA fifa run the game and we can't make changes without there say so.

Get rid of blatter and rules will change.

The international board make decisions on the laws of the game.  Fifa have 4 votes. The FA, Scottish FA.Welsh FA and N Irish FA have one each.  Changes are made if they have support of 3/4s of the votes.

Anyway the big difference between rugby and football is that no one, players, spectators or club officials understand the laws of rugby.  Where as everyone thinks they "know the rules of football".

Been here before but

"you cant be offside if it comes off a defender"

"heads - I win - we'll kick off"

"foul throw, his foot was on the line"

"free kick ref, you cant say - 'leave it' "

Spot the one that's incorrect.

Rugby is a relatively dangerous game (especially compared to football) so there's a safety aspect of payers having to be disciplined and show respect to the referee. It's much easier for a rugby player to lose control of their aggression than a football player and as such referee's must demand respect

I'd say 1 and 3. To be played onside the defender must have intentionally played the ball, not have a deflection off them and the sideline is part of the pitch so would that make it a foul throw? (I don't know I'm just guessing)
