Walsall are halfway to unlikely double against League One form teams

Feb 3 2009 by Brian Halford, Birmingham Mail

MARTIN O’Connor today challenged Walsall’s players to lift themselves again against Leicester City at The Banks’s Stadium tonight – and complete one of the unlikeliest back-to-back doubles in English football this season.

Before last Saturday few pundits would have given the faltering Saddlers a prayer in home games against in-form Leeds and League One leaders Leicester.

But Walsall were superb in their 1-0 win over Leeds and will take on the Foxes tonight, weather permitting, with confidence flooding back.

“Against Leeds we were excellent,” said assistant manager O’Connor.

“We stopped their ball-players playing and that is full testament to the lads’ energy and courage and their ability to get about the pitch.

“It was a very good performance and three valuable points, but now it’s history.

“We need another big performance tonight, but the players showed against Leeds that they relish these sort of games.

‘‘I said to the gaffer on Saturday I’d love to have been playing in these two games. They are the sort you want to play in with big crowds and lots of noise.”

Fired by the goals of Walsall product Matty Fryatt, Leicester have raced ten points clear at the top and are nailed on to go straight back up to the Championship.

The Foxes were not particularly convincing at Northampton at the weekend – but still won the game.

And they possess loads of strike power in the form of Fryatt and Steve Howard, supported by former Albion winger Lloyd Dyer.

O’Connor knows that, to complete that quickfire double, the Saddlers will have to be as good as, if not better than, they were against Leeds.

“I have watched Leicester on DVD and made a few phone calls so we know what they are about,” he said.

“The front two are dangerous so we have to nullify that threat. If we can do that we have the players who can take the game to them.”

Saddlers staff out in force to beat freeze

Feb 3 2009 by Brian Halford, Birmingham Mail

WALSALL will do everything in their power to defy the elements and keep their scheduled game against Leicester City on tonight to try to build on the momentum from Saturday's excellent win over Leeds.

The odds are stacked against the Saddlers facing the League One leaders this evening.

As snow piled upon the Banks's Stadium pitch last night, all the covers and shovel-wielding ground staff in the world did not appear sufficient to keep conditions playable.

But Walsall would love to get straight back into action after their uplifting win over Leeds, the first under new management team Chris Hutchings and Martin O'Connor.

And there was a further double boost yesterday as left-back Paul Boertien signed a new six-month contract and the transfer deadline passed with highly-rated centre-half Anthony Gerrard still on board.

Gerrard, for whom the Saddlers turned down a reported £350,000 bid from Southampton last summer, attracted plenty of interest during January but no bid acceptable to the board. He must wait a little longer for the upward movement he craves and deserves.

Boertien, meanwhile, has signed for the rest of the season after the club, which appeared bizarrely ambivalent to the future of one of its better players, was jolted to its senses by Hutchings.

The manager said: "We are delighted to have secured his services until the end of the season and I am sure he will play an important role for us."

Looking hopeful referee alan wiley called in to inspect pitch

They really want this game to be played dont they

Mike Dean on saturday, Alan Wiley tonight, it'll be Mike Riley next after his Anfield cock-ups. It's a shame there aren't enough referees otherwise the FA could completely cast the premier rejects off the radar rather than just send them down to the football league. <_<

I don't think Wiley is the ref, i think he's just from the Walsall area so he's going to inspect the pitch. According to the football league website the ref is Keith Stroud.

EDIT: beaten to it.

Not sure if hes the ref tonight, just hes been called in for the pitch inspection.

Or does it have to be the ref on the night who makes the call?

Brighton OFF Peterborough, 19:45

Carlisle OFF Hereford, 19:45

Cheltenham OFF Tranmere, 19:45

Crewe OFF Yeovil, 19:45

Huddersfield v Hartlepool, 19:45

Leyton Orient OFF Leeds United, 19:45

Millwall OFF Colchester, 19:45

Oldham OFF Bristol Rovers, 19:45

Southend v S****horpe, 19:45

Stockport v MK Dons, 19:45

Walsall v Leicester, 19:45

Great chance to put some more distance between us and other sides if it does go ahead.

But from the amount of postponements, i wouldn't be too optimistic. Fair play to Walsall for the effort they're putting in, top notch. But there's only so much they can do.
