The Doctor Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Do you still think he would have been a good choice or a tactical messiah? We won on Saturday not least because of his abysmal set up - he started off with no recognised full-backs and a lumbering CB at RB despite that we've played a couple of games in a row with two of the fastest players in the league in Vardy and Schlupp down our left hand side. Once we shifted to 3-4-3 and put Schlupp onto the wing and gave him license to attack, Dawson was a sitting duck - everyone could see it and Pulis made no attempt to give him support or get pace on that side to deal with Jeff. Then, in response to 10 minutes of pressure he went for 4 CBs. taking off a CM in Gardner who was playing reasonably well - he weakened the CM and gave King and Cambiasso free reign, while not remotely solving the problems they had down their sides. From what West Brom fans have said it's hardly an isolated incident, so is he really all that?
Brainy Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 He miraculously kept Crystal Palace up last year and has taken WBA to near enough safety when they were looking like definite bottom 3/4 material under Irvine. Fine the team he's inherited is better than a team that should be finishing in the bottom four. Just because our manager got it right against him despite getting it wrong for most of the season means nothing. Pulis' record at keeping teams up in league this is 100%. Whether we'd have stayed up under him I don't know but I think we'd have got our season back on track before April if he was to come in around the turn of the year.
foxfanazer Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 I don't think he's ever been all that personally and even without the past couple of games for us and WBA I wouldn't have taken him. If Pearson can carry on how he has the past few games then he's the better man for us imo. When we are set up to win games we'll give anybody a game
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Would have hated to have had him here. Imagine watching (and paying for the 'privilege') his sides week in week out.
bovril Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 I don't like him and I wouldn't be thrilled to see him managing our side. But I believe we'd be in a slightly better position with him than we are now. Of course it's all hypothetical, the only way to judge is the final table.
Footballwipe Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 You have to take a Kindle when you go and watch a pulis team, the enormous gaps in play between winning and taking throw ins, corners and free kicks are so tiresome. Timewasting from the 30th minute onwards on Saturday; they got what they deserved.
David Lowe Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 I rate him highly but I don't think he would have been a good fit for our club this season. Alan Irvine was always out of his depth so he was a good choice for WBA to try to keep them up.
AyewJoking Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 he was likely expecting us to shoot ourselves in the foot at some point.
narboroughblue Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 My friend said after the game that managers like Pulis are the problem with English football. It was so direct and gave no fluidity to the game. Never wanted him to take the reigns and reading the West Brom fans forum they aren't happy either. Well organised maybe but lack of entertainment pretty much guaranteed.
Vardinhio Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Every manager makes poor decisions and has bad games. I never wanted him as manager but his record speaks for itself and if he wasn't appointed I'd have had a much better chance of winning over £3000 as with Irvine at the helm they would be on their way down IMO.
Danno Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Massively overrated manager. Did a decent job with a Palace side who had a good squad but a horrendous manager in Holloway, but West Brom were never going down anyway.
RedSoxUK Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Think Pulis made a massive mistake by dropping Andre Wisdom when he came in, was a solid RB who managed to get involved with attacking plays / assists. Don't think he deserves the praise / credit in the long-run of managing a football team, Stoke were stuttering before he left. Don't rate Pulis, didn't even rate Irvine, and don't rate Sherwood either.
Danno Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Plus i wouldn't be able to watch us pack the midfield and hoof it to Chris Wood and Leo Ulloa all game.
suffolk fox Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Never been relegated at premier league level. Is a good manager regardless of what fans think of him. Fell into the premier league bias of oh it's only Leicester we will beat them easy cos they are bottom of the table etc, etc. Played for the 2 1 win thinking they would easily hold on cos they had four centrebacks on the pitch came a cropper when we started to play how we use to quick passing high tempo and we got what we deserved. Wba will stay up this season, Pulis record of never having been relegated will remain intact.
AyewJoking Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 its because of pulis they can afford to lose 3 on the spin. im guessing they prefered the entertaining football that had them in freefall.
bovril Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Plus i wouldn't be able to watch us pack the midfield and hoof it to Chris Wood and Leo Ulloa all game. You must have hated late September to December last year.
Donut Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Yeah, he is all that. Hes a quality manager. Look at the jobs he has done in his career, and the way he has taken clubs that have had no right to be where they are now, and put the foundations there for them to be as succesful as they are. This forum at times is full of ridiculous polar views. 2 wins and Nigel Pearson is the chess grandmaster of tactics, completely ignoring that West Ham was wide open and West Brom could have gone either way until YES Pearson made good changes and YES the changes West Brom made to solidify things didnt work. Youre throwing Pulis' track record away on the basis of a couple of recent results.
Fox92 Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 His style of play is horrific, they were just missing out the midfield on Saturday.
Danno Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 His style of play is horrific, they were just missing out the midfield on Saturday. It's dull as ****. Imagine selling your soul as a club so some **** in a cap can come in and play hoofball all game.
Benji Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 Will he keep WBA up and would he have kept us up taking over from Christmas? Probably yes on both counts. The problem is if WBA do survive then from game one next season he will set up a team that does just enough to finish safe, and so it would continue. Whether it be Pearson or someone else, I want a manager at this club that tries to build a football club and not just a team that always "just does enough". Had Pulis come here he'd have been loved by the Summer and hated by Christmas.

Whether it be Pearson or someone else, I want a manager at this club that tries to build a football club and not just a team that always "just does enough". Had Pulis come here he'd have been loved by the Summer and hated by Christmas. This is a more balanced view. He would achieve the objective of solidifying the club, and getting it into a solid position where it would not be threatened. After that, yes, a new manager can bring the style to the club and improve the club further, having been given a solid basis to start from.
Danno Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 And not take you down, and achieve some reasonable success. I prefer losing. With style. Yeah cos finishing 17th playing the dullest, most unimaginative football in the whole football league is really the best it gets.
zak_lcfc Posted 13 April 2015 Posted 13 April 2015 He's still got WBA above the relegation zone whilst we sit bottom, not the most attractive football but for a large part of the season we've hoofed it up the field sometimes to a lone 5"10 striker with no end product and been defensively terrible at the same time, yes we've won 2 in a row and it seems the players and Pearson are finally learning, if we stay up then fair play the fans who wanted him can be questioned but still a long way to go! I agree he's a manager that doesn't push a team so far forward but to solidify their position in the league for a few years he is decent at that
