All seems a bit daft, there are similar stories of people getting naked in Angkor Wat and on mountains in Nepal, I don't get the appeal, "I'm somewhere cool, let's get naked!", then the idea of it angering the spirits and causing earthquakes is just as daft.

This bloke needs to get out there pronto: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jun/09/naked-rambler-stephen-gough-makes-history-nude-court-appearance

"The man known as the Naked Rambler has made legal history by appearing before leading judges in the nude. Former marine Stephen Gough, from Hampshire, watched proceedings at the court of appeal in London via videolink from prison. Gough, who says it is his human right to be naked in public, remained seated behind a large table as the judges were asked to quash his most recent conviction.

A lawyer representing him in court argued that the conviction for breaching an antisocial behaviour order (asbo) - by walking out of prison wearing only his boots and socks - was unsafe because he was not permitted to stand trial “not wearing any clothes”. He was found guilty by a jury and sentenced by the trial judge to two and a half years’ imprisonment. Gough, now 56, had refused to put on clothes when he left Winchester prison after being released from a jail term for a previous breach of the Asbo, which bans him from appearing in public without clothing. He was arrested outside the prison. His appeal against the conviction was thrown out on Tuesday by Lady Justice Rafferty and two other judges. Rafferty said: “In our judgment, were the defendant to have appeared naked in front of the court it would have been a further breach of the anti-social behaviour order.” She said this “bizarre notion” would have been fatal to Gough’s argument. While sentencing Gough last year, Judge Jane Miller had suggested moves should be made to find him a closed nudist community to live in to prevent the cycle of imprisonment which has seen him jailed for much of the past eight years. Gough earned his nickname when he completed a naked trek from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 2003 and he featured in a BBC documentary covering his journey".

I was listening to the news this morning about this story and she was told on several occasions by the travel guide not to take her clothes off. What did she expect in a muslim country? She thought she was being clever at the time and was being ignorant and disrespectful to the locals and the tour guide so she deserves everything she gets. Next time she is asked to do something she might be a bit more respectful!!!

Saw it on the news yesterday and generally agree with what's already been said. Yes to us it may seem odd that it could cause such offence (although I've never gone bollocko on a mountain before), but they were all aware of what they were doing and had no benefit from doing so. The arrogance and ignorance of some British tourists never ceases to amaze me, we're still nowhere near the Americans, but we're getting there.

Get naked in countries that don't mind it by all means but to go to another country and openly flout the rules is dumb, ignorant and disrespectful and you deserve whatever punishment you get.

Never heard it called that before. Must be big.

As for the naked climbers, they deserve punishment for going naked (not for angering spirits). There are a few naked beaches near us but I feel both a little annoyed and a little nauseous when we have the complete naked bathers going on "our" non -naked beaches. I normally point out to them that these are not naked beaches, tell them where they can go to bathe naked and ask them to cover their lower regions. They are mostly old germans so nothing to get excited about and mostly they accept it and cover up or move on.

It's all a bit retarded.

We're all born naked, as is the rest of nature.

You've got to be a bunch of attention seeking student twats to want to go and get your kit off up a hill mind, agree with that.

I've never even understood the need to ruin a photo of a cool place or amazing bit of scenery by posing in it at all, let alone getting your kit off or acting like a tit "lulz here's me twerking abe lincun hur derp derp."

We really are a generation of narcissistic fame whores.

We've all been in our Mother's cant but that doesn't mean it's acceptable to ever go in it again!

Really? This girl's 23. Okay she was being thick, but we've all done cuntish things travelling in our early 20's. And as for "openly flouting the rules", please point me to the home office advice on Malaysia that states "getting naked on mountains causes earthquakes and angers local religious leaders". I imagine most Malaysian people think the whole story is pretty dumb, it reads to me like the government making an example of these people as a sop to powerful religious leaders in the country.

And you think they deserve whatever punishment they get?

I remember watching a couple of dudes get naked for some photos at Uluru, it was strange to say the least.

First impression of this story I felt a little sorry for them as it just looked like a combination of that liberal student type innocence mixed with a bit of basic Western cultural ignorance, however it appears now the guide told them on numerous occasions just how sacred this place is and even repeated it when they started to disrobe and tell them what a bad idea it was.

If that is the case they deserve what they get.

Malaysia is fairly moderate, I doubt they will get a severe punishment, it wouldn't look good for the country.

23 is adulthood, age is no excuse. In any case there was a whole group of them of varying ages.

I don't think you have any idea how Malaysian people feel so I don't think you should presume.

They have openly flouted the rules by taking their clothes off on a sacred mountain. You go around breaking laws in foreign countries and you get what you deserve.

I doubt the Malaysian government will be particularly harsh on them as it's a moderate country so yes they deserve whatever they get.

Is it a law, or a cultural sensitivity?
