James Richardson is still fantastic, but the matchday commentary and presentation with Captain Charisma Michael Owen, and the lanky fvcknugget Jake Humpries is terrible.

Arsenal & Chelsea are the only Premiership teams that understand how to play in Europe, teams like City try and play their usual Prem style and look how well that has worked out for them in the last 5 years

So what does that say? Its the management Wenger & Mourinho know the score, Brendan rodgers is Clueless when it comes to European football as is Pelligrini, Van Gaal should know what he is doing and I wouldn't wright United off yet they had bad luck and lost a key player. as for the other Manchester team with Sevilla looking so good they have a monumental task on their hands to turn things around and get out of that group I'd say they wont get out their group.

Can't understand why our teams struggle to perform consistently like teams from Spain and Germany when abroad.

Because they just aren't that good. It's that simple.

Losing the fourth UCL place will be the best thing to happen to the PL, a huge wake up call.

It means one team from the "elite" won't make it (at least.) It also means if the top four was unreachable to most clubs, the top three is a total and utter fantasy. The answer? The only way to qualify for the Champions League will be to win the Europa League. Thus, teams at least try to do better in the EL as they take it more seriously and the coefficient increases, another nation's slips and we're back to four, and the whole sorry saga can begin again.

Relies on the teams getting to the UCL not being totally inept, however.

In a dream world that's what might happen, anyway

I stand by that Man City's result isn't the disaster it's being made out to be. Juventus were a better side than them last season and they probably still are now. Absolute tears at them being 4/1. Two freak results and a loss at the next best team in Italy doesn't make them a bad side. People were going on like Man City were playing Rubin Kazan.

Juve have been absolutely terrible this year and have lost the likes of Vidal and Tevez. City should've won, without a shadow of a doubt with their squad. For some reason, they're always bottlers in Europe.

Three games!!! Compare the two sides yesterday. There really isn't a lot between them.

Lets see how far Manchester City can go and how their players perform. It's the usual case, good domestic players in the Premier League but fail to deliver against better opposition. Juventus, although they have started poorly, were runners up last season and despite losing a few good players that should still stand for something. Also gutted I didn't back them at 4/1. Saw a couple of their fans in City Centre this morning, proudly displaying their scarves I think!

Be interesting to see how Sevilla do against Man City. Can definitely see them slipping up in Spain.

Looking a lot like Gladbach will be bottom of that group. I think Juventus will go on to top it from here. I'm seriously seeing Man City third again.

Can't see Celtic doing well, as I think they're too focused on improving their league form imo.

Wrong thread: should've Europa League one.

It is obvious, our top teams have resorted to buying success... it isn't working, the teams that were great in the 00's didn't have it instant they were blooded into great sides, not changed continuously... the spending was nearly 1bill in total on players over the summer, and a lot of very good young players got shipped off on loan yet again, not just the English ones either

It's been the same for years. The top clubs in this country never learn. We've got the financial clout in this country to build some absolutely special sides but they've actually gone backwards collectively. Man City will go and throw £25mil at a club like Sevilla for one player, who in turn will go and buy about five quality players, who are eventually sold at a profit to clubs like Man City, rinse and repeat.

English clubs throw money around like they're already the top dogs. Did anyone in England bring in a player of the calibre of Arturo Vidal this summer?

Couldn't agree more.  As Gary Neville commented on Monday Night Football, only 29% of players who started this weekend were English, but can you honestly say the quality of the league is greater now after the foreign influx?  Absolutely not.  The whole "English players are too expensive" guff doesn't wash either now considering the eye-watering amounts our clubs play on breathtakingly mediocre foreign "talent".

Tonight was an absolute humiliation for the Premier League, Juventus lost most of their quality players over the summer and were winless so far in Serie A, yet they still turn up in Manchester and roll over the current unbeaten league leaders (who'd looked fantastic domestically).

Surely it's only a matter of time before we lose that 4th CL place and that would be justice quite frankly.  It was always said that increasing the numbers of English players would benefit the national side but those against the idea said it would weaken the Premier League...frankly I believe it would benefit both parties now.

It does though because Sterling would've probably gone for about £25mil tops if he was French.

Pathetic showing from English clubs already. We'll deservedly lose the 4th Champions league spot too.

Pathetic is a little harsh don't you think? Like people have said City lost to he Italian champions and Champions League runners up last season also, they're really aren't a pushover. Man Utd aren't the best side, I covered that in my last post but again is losing 2-1 away to the Dutch Champions when you scraped to fourth place last season really that pathetic?

The Premier League isn't the best League in the world anymore, it was but it isn't now. Also European football bar La Liga are a lot more even, simple as that.

It just adds to the shit served up from West Ham and Southampton. I agree regarding Man City, that's the only result that's moderately acceptable. United took PSV's star player and another standout player form last year has gone to Newcastle. For the amount of money the Premier League clubs spend (particularly the Manchester clubs) it really is pathetic. I think they'll both go out the groups.

Also agree about the Premier League, that's kind of my point. It's nowhere near the best anymore, but it should be.

United shouldn't be losing to psv. They're in shocking form and van gaal has lost the plot.

Tbf, Rooney didn't play.

They've missed an apparently 'world-class' player in him, and they would've won had he participated some will say.

I'm sure Maccabi Tel Aviv heading to Tehran for an AFC Champions League match would go down a storm

They're here with UEFA so they play in UEFA competitions... it's not that hard surely?

Of course an away match in Tehran wouldn't go down a storm. They wouldn't be allowed in. lol But they're still an Asian country, so the fact that they're in UEFA, the European football confederation is what I'm referring to.

I honestly thought Man City were in control until Mandzukic scored. Even from the start Juve sent up 2 banks - i'll be interested to see them when they lose Chillieni, Evra and Buffon to retirement. They are that disciplined it was interesting to watch raw pace from Sterling vs experience.

The problem with Man City is your Toure's, Silvas when they don't step up the whole team doesn't. Didn't help Aguero getting injured, i think they really buzz of him.

BT Sport coverage was ok, I like it when they commentate with the pitch as the back drop not in a separate studio

And Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City's atmosphere at home is diabolical. Man United can come out with credit but last night at Etihad was terrible. Think they still had 5k tickets left??

I see the Greek cops are having their own little referendum on austerity tonight. Have absolutely battered the Bayern fans in Piraus. Bayern ultras have left the stadium in protest.
