No biggy, do you not remember Zolts Latzko?

That's when the English players were actually good though!

There probably be more good ones, had the top teams not tried to buy their way to titles... by just going for the overpriced foreigners. Since the drop in English players the league is actually going backwards ...

Our league is paying the price for trying to buy instant success rather than build a team over a period of time... seems players who aren't an instant success, they decide to just spend millions on another player rather than blood them

"Do I really have to tell you this is the best league in the World"

So far its been an total disaster for English clubs in europe. West Ham and Southampton exiting the europa league in the qualifying stage and now Man City and Man U losing there opening games. Where does it go wrong?

It is obvious, our top teams have resorted to buying success... it isn't working, the teams that were great in the 00's didn't have it instant they were blooded into great sides, not changed continuously... the spending was nearly 1bill in total on players over the summer, and a lot of very good young players got shipped off on loan yet again, not just the English ones either

Talk about how Italy could take our fourth-place coefficient from us this season, if circumstance fell right. We'd get exactly what we deserve as well.

Too right.

Looking at Man City, they didn't look interested. Sterling is so bad at finishing. Two great chances, two back passes. He only has to lift the ball a couple of feet off the ground and he scores twice. It's pointless being a supposedly talented player if you have nothing between the ears.

Worrying if we come 4th this year and lose our chance of playing in the Champions League.

lol Fletcher and McManaman were talking like Man City had this won at 1-0 after 70 minutes, and Juve go and score!

From the commentary you would've thought Man City were playing a lower half Championship side, not the regular Italian champions and runners-up in this last season.

This all over, I was shocked...

Can't understand why our teams struggle to perform consistently like teams from Spain and Germany when abroad.

I know, it's really fvcking difficult to understand that they're teams are better than ours

Couldn't agree more.  As Gary Neville commented on Monday Night Football, only 29% of players who started this weekend were English, but can you honestly say the quality of the league is greater now after the foreign influx?  Absolutely not.  The whole "English players are too expensive" guff doesn't wash either now considering the eye-watering amounts our clubs play on breathtakingly mediocre foreign "talent".

Tonight was an absolute humiliation for the Premier League, Juventus lost most of their quality players over the summer and were winless so far in Serie A, yet they still turn up in Manchester and roll over the current unbeaten league leaders (who'd looked fantastic domestically).

Surely it's only a matter of time before we lose that 4th CL place and that would be justice quite frankly.  It was always said that increasing the numbers of English players would benefit the national side but those against the idea said it would weaken the Premier League...frankly I believe it would benefit both parties now.

Yes Gary, nailed it really, and your extended opinions really confirms many fans thoughts.

Plus teams like city, Swansea, Southampton, seem to have foreign players, who dont believe they have yet made the grade,

and are prepared to put more effort in to their career at their new clubs.and have some older experienced players, who want to prove they still have it.

Chelsea, Man.city.Man.utd have foreign players who may have lost at the present, after winning

at the highest level, that bite and will.Their class will show and form will return, but the question is at what %.

Maybe an implosion for top EPL clubs,1st Liverpool, Manu last season invested in WC proven players, but played only 6-7 good games, and have now gone.Man.city have thrown 20s of mils out but cant find the formular, for a decent champions league run.

Just a thought, an opinion on what could be happening, but like Neville referred to, we are throwing money out, well over the top prices, it could be not only fans but coaches and managers alike believe their 15-35+ mill players need less support or coaching, and try less to mesh their players, believing the money proves it comes automatic.

We have laughed at middle teams where their top foreign players have failed, creased up at Liverpool, now last 2-3 seasons the super millionaire top 4 clubs, now have the virus.Wenger might not be so dumb, not wanting to pay too high for Mr avg overpriced strikers.

Agents like all salesman are being allowed to overrate their wares, and so called business club owners are being conned, and show their stupidness......

where if it was their actual business, they would laugh the agent out of their office

I didnt enjoy the BT coverage at all.

Its bad enough that a competition so big as the champions league is on a channel like BT sport, but the commentary wasnt nearly as good as the sky coverage, and the highlights show with Gary Lineker was full of little blunders and mistakes, just unprofessional.

Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand are both really bad to listen to as well for me. Especially Gerrard, that kind of monotone, doesnt sound interested voice. When he said Di Maria's goal was up there with the best goals of the night "I suppose" it just sounded terrible.

Just didnt enjoy their coverage.

Fully agree regarding the BT coverage, so poor. Just not on the same level as Sky, be interesting to know their viewing numbers compared to Sky's last season on 'matchday 1'. Still that's another debate for another day..

I really don't understand Man City and the Champions League, they should still get through the group but tonight's performance is not good viewing for them progressing in the competition. Like people have said City have been brilliant this season, their performance v Everton away was seriously one of the best away performances I have seen in years. Has the international break had an effect on them? Weren't at the races v Palace, or are they'd so heavily reliant on Aguero?

United just aren't very good, yeah they comfortably beat us 3-1 on Saturday but we are/were woeful, United were fortunate to beat Spurs, hardly great v Aston Villa, drew 0-0 to Newcastle, lost to Swansea and beat a pathetic Liverpool at home. So going away to PSV who know United are there for the taking without Wayne Rooney and at home, I wasn't that surprised with tonight's result. Van Gaal is fortunate that the other big clubs in the League are struggling or pressure would be on him I think.

I'll comment on English clubs in the Champions League after Chelsea and Arsenal have played, we know City have a problem in Europe and we should all see that Man United just aren't very good so tonight really wasn't that much of a shock, for me anyway. Fair play to Juventus, lost three of their best players and performed brilliantly.

Gutted for Luke Shaw, that's an horrific injury and will take a lot mentally and physically to recover from!

Anyone saying BT coverage was worse than Sky can't have been watching the live goals programme on 426 hosted by James Richardson. That was brilliant and a huge, huge upgrade on anything Sky have done, ever.

Totally agree, it was really good. Got straight to the goals and important action, great, insightful, knowledgeable punditry and importantly no adverts during either half. So glad they used their EFS three, too. Imagine trying to find three ex-footballers with that depth of knowledge and ability. Plus James Richardson is a great host.
